Overview
This week is a down week following the boost that Black Friday provides the previous week. However, sales should increase on a weekly basis through Christmas.
Overall, hardware sale this week decreased by 45 percent. Week-on-week sales is down for every platform, except for the PSP. Overall year-on-year sales are down by 30 percent. No platforms are up year-over-year.
Two games debuted in the top 30 this week: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3) and Shingeki no Kyojin ~Hangeki no Tsubasa~ (3DS).
Software milestones this week in the top 30: Call of Duty: Ghosts (X360) passed the six million mark; Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS3) passed the five million mark; Just Dance 2014 (Wii) passed the one million mark; FIFA Soccer 14 (PS3) passed the four million mark; FIFA Soccer 14 (X360) passed the three million mark; and Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS4) passed the one million mark.
Worldwide Hardware
Hardware home console sales week-on-week is down across the board. PlayStation 3 sales are down 165,503 (-35%) to 306,719 units sold. PlayStation 4 sales are down 667,028 (-70%) to 280,421 units sold. Xbox One sales are down 187,177 (-42%) to 261,188 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 349,610 (-64%) to 199,598 units sold. The Wii U sold 174,092 units, a decrease of 58,012 (-25%). The Wii sold 75,775 units, a decrease of 23,606 (-24%).
Handheld sales week-on-week is up for the PSP, and down for the DS, 3DS, and Vita. The 3DS sold 666,121 units, which is down 250,082 (-27%) week-on-week. The PlayStation Vita sold 98,282 units which is down 28,615 (-23%) compared to last week. The PSP is up 5,014 (8%) to 67,957 units sold. The DS is down 10,292 (-34%) to 19,540 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 1.73 million units (-45%) to 2,149,693 million units sold.
No platform is up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 252,909 (-45%), the Wii is down 23,606 (-69%), the Xbox 360 is down 366,991 (-65%), and the Wii U is down 58,012 (-69%). The PSP is down 63,118 (-48%), the DS is down 111,955 (-85%), the Vita is down 42,169 (-30%) and the 3DS is down 84,078 (-11%). Year on year sales are down 931,694 units (-30%).
Home console hardware sales have decreased for the PS3, Wii, X360, Wii U, and PS4 for one week and the Xbox One for two straight weeks. The Wii U has outsold the Wii for 12 straight weeks. The Xbox One has outsold the Xbox 360 for one week. The PlayStation 4 was outsold by the PlayStation 3 this week.
The PlayStation 3 has a 53 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 34 percent market share; and the Wii has a 13 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 39 percent market share for the eighth generation, The Xbox One has a 36 percent market share and the Wii U has a 24 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360, and Wii U are up.
Handheld hardware sales have increased for the PSP for six weeks. The DS, 3DS, and Vita have all dropped for one week. The Vita has outsold the PSP for nine straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has decreased this week to 568,000 units, from 790,000 units last week.
The PSP has a 78 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the DS has a 22 percent market share. The 3DS has an 87 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 13 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks all four handhelds are up.
Worldwide Software
Two games debuted in the top 30 this week: Gran Turismo 6 (PS3) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 852,762. The game launched worldwide.
Shingeki no Kyojin ~Hangeki no Tsubasa~ (3DS) debuted at number 29 with sales of 92,682. The game launched in Japan.
Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Call of Duty: Ghosts (X360) is at number two with sales of 538,579. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS3) is at number three with sales of 492,583. Just Dance 2014 (Wii) is at number four with sales of 378,114. Pokémon X/Y (3DS) is at number five with sales of 367,562.
Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) is at number six with sales of 334,394. Grand Theft Auto V (X360) is at number seven with sales of 310,036. FIFA Soccer 14 (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 209,506. Super Mario 3D World (WiiU) is at number nine with sales of 206,827. Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 197,869.
Software home console sales week-on-week is up for the PlayStation 3 and Wii. The PlayStation 3 sold 6.10 million games, an increase of 831,383units (16%). The Xbox 360 sold 5.21 million games this week, a decrease of 277,965 units (-22%). Wii software sales are up 7,647 million units (0%) to 2.36 million games sold. The Wii U sold 985,482 games, a decrease of 124,352 units (-11%). The PlayStation 4 sold 867,943 games, a decrease of 1.25 million (-59%). The Xbox One sold 612,955 games, a decrease 336,404 units.
Handheld software sales week-on-week is up for the DS and 3DS. The 3DS sold 2.31 million games, which is up 131,279 units (6%). The DS sold 1.12 million games, an increase of 5,298 units (0%) week-on-week. The PSP sold 344,910 games, a decrease of 719 (-0%). Vita game sales are down 42,638 units (-11%) to 342,281 games sold. Total combined software is down 1.05 million units (-5%) week-on-week to 23.14 million.
Year-on-year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Wii U, and 3DS. The PlayStation 3 is up 69,165 units (1%), the Wii is down 1.97 million units (-45%), the Xbox 360 is down 1.47 million units (-22%), and the Wii U is up 113,146 units (13%). The DS is down 933,254 units (-46%), the PSP is down 25,834 units (-7%), the 3DS is up 408,192 units (21%), and the Vita is down 65,411 units (-16%). Total combined software is down 2.39 million units (-11%) games sold year-on-year.
Home console software sales have increased for the Wii for eight weeks and the PlayStation 3 for two weeks. The Xbox 360, Wii U and PS4 have dropped for one week, and the Xbox One for two weeks.
The PlayStation 3 has a 45 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 38 percent market share; and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. The Wii U has a 40 percent market share for the eighth generation, the PlayStation 4 has a 35 percent market share, and the Xbox One has a 25 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four home consoles are up.
DS software sales have increased for 10 weeks and the 3DS for four weeks. The PSP and Vita has dropped for one week. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold nearly seven times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold more than three times as many games as the PSP.
The DS has a 76 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 24 percent market share. The 3DS has an 87 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 13 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are up.
