Gears of War: E-Day Devs Are 'Proud to be Called Out to be an Exclusive' - News

The Coalition studio art director Aryan Hanbeck and creative director Matt Searcy in an interview with Destin discussed Gears of War: E-Day and it being the return to Xbox console exclusives.

"We feel great because Gears is such a. . . [big] part of Xbox’s DNA," said Searcy (via MP1st). "It’s woven into it. And at The Coalition, we feel pretty honored to have Gears and be the ones bringing that legacy forward.

"We know how much it means to people. We know how much it means to us. And I think this is true of most game devs. We are just passionate about our craft. We’re all gamers first and foremost. We love making games. We love making Gears. So, from our perspective, we just wanted to make the best goddamn Gears game we could. We wanted it to be a technical and art showpiece. And I think getting to see Asha on stage say 'to return to Xbox, we’re returning to Gears,' it’s a really cool moment.

"We’re proud to be one of Xbox’s main titles and I think it’s been that way for a long time, and it’s pretty cool to kind of show up now and fill that role again."

Hanbeck added, "We’re proud to be a showcase and we’re proud to be called out to be an exclusive. I think, in a way, it’s a validation of the work we’ve done."

Gears of War: E-Day will launch for the Xbox Series X|S, PC via Steam and Microsoft Store, and Xbox Game Pass on October 6.

Wouldn't you be more proud to have your work showcased and played by as many people possible?

read alot of staff have fears of layoffs soon after release... before getting bonuses for metacritic scores. Now why would you fear that? Unless you expect it to flop sales wise?

I ended up dusting off my series s and pre ordered the game. Wasn't cheap. I hope I don't regret it, as i heard the campaign is actually good. I'm trying to avoid the recent wokeness and stuff going around about the game.

By that logic, there shouldn't be such a thing as exclusives. But exclusives help define a platform. Xbox making their games multiplatform was a major contributor in the collapse in XBS sales that began in late 2024. Sony saw that and pulled back from even releasing their games on PC. Nintendo has long kept their games exclusive, the odd mobile-only release notwithstanding. Xbox clearly saw their strategy wasn't working and is reversing course, keeping their classic IPs off of rival consoles.

I understand that it's good to have competition, as it prevents laziness and resting on laurels, out competing and so, but i don't see xbox putting itself in a position where sony has to worry, regardless of gears. They already released gears and halo on ps5, so the damage is already done.

Phil spence actually had a good idea going, i can see exactly where his plan was heading and his intentions of gamepass and reason for multiple platform release.

I'm not sure if of Asha gets it, as she seems quick to overturn what he's done.

Gears is now even more terrible, sigh. I actually thought Gears 5 was a big upgrade over the horrifically bad Gears 4 and was originally a little hopeful, oh well. What a year: Halo was so much worse than I ever expected it could be. Ran so badly on my brand new $2000 PC and just looked terrible and new content was bad and missing old content yikes.

Then Wolverine. Then Gears of War.

Nintendo is winning by doing nothing, like Valve now. I'm not even a big Nintendo fan (their games are great, but their hardware and corporate practices not so much) yet I just picked up the new Fire Emblem game even though I'm very angry about the 30fps (give us a 40fps mode for goodness sake in an update). Nintendo doesn't do any of the modern crap I hate: I'm giving them money.

PC purchases are just Galactic racer and Tomb Raider (preorders from nostalgia). Oh wait I forgot Octopath Zero and FF Resonance. Make that four.

The rest of my free gaming time is spent playing the absolutely incredible recomp and decomp scene right now.

This "Gears 4 and 5 are bad games" has always been a horrible take. They are good games, did they live up to the OG Trilogy? Probably not, not many do. Eday is a return to form from what iv actually played and is one of the best looking games on the market. And I havnt even tried it on my 9070XT yet, just played it on the Series X.

Saying Nintendo is doing nothing is also ridiculous. They just released, StarFox, and Fire Emblem and soon Zelda OoT. Nintendo is by far not doing nothing.

nintendo is winning by doing nothing is the "valve meme" you silly, by CHANGING nothing, honestly...

Gears 4 is quite bad, Gears 5 was pretty good and Eday just shit the bed and ended that so oh well....

"Valve meme" makes zero sense as Nintendo has done heaps, especially with the Switch 2, they are the most innovative company in this industry.

Where are you getting this idea that Eday shit the bed? Have you played it? Im currently playing it and loving it so far. Both Gears 4, 5 and Eday are critic successes unless you think averaging 8 and 9s is shitting and bed.

That's great, but the game is likely a flop. I would prefer if this studio disappeared and they gave Machine Games or id Software a chance with this IP.

Machine Games only exists at this point because Indiana Jones. They could also be one flop away from being shut down.

You not a Gears fan? Literally playing EDay right now and its awesome

I am a fan of the originals. I have mixed feelings about everything The Coalition has done.

I am gonna play E-Day, but the game is still in bad hands and will flop. The Steam numbers are at par with Halo: Campaign Evolved.

So you are basing your entire point on other opinions?
I love Gears, played and finished all of them, including Tactics. EDay is a decent effort to the return to form.

Using Steam numbers for an Xbox game is disingenuous. The game only just full released today on a School/Work night, its also on GamePass.

Play it for yourself and judge, dont fall in the trap of online toxicity.

Blue Dragon PC Port with Cheat Engine running the game at 1.5x speed, with max graphics, it is so fine! Don't need the new stuff.
