Weekly Sales Analysis, 16 November - PlayStation 4 Dominates

Overview

The PlayStation 4 launched this week in North America. The console set a new video game record with 1.08 million units sold in its launch. Also four PlayStation 4 games debuted in the top 10.

Overall, hardware sale this week increased by 125 percent. Week-on-week sales is up across the board. Overall year-on-year sales are up for the first time in many months, due to the launch of the PlayStation 4.  The 3DS and the PlayStation Vita are the only platforms up year-over-year.

11 games debuted in the top 30 this week, up from one last week. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS4) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 808,779. The game launched in North America.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS3) passed the three million mark; Pokemon X/Y (3DS) passed the seven million mark; Battlefield 4 (PS3) passed the one million mark; Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (PS3) passed the one million mark; and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (X360) passed the one million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

 

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up across the board. The PlayStation 4 launched this week in North America with sales of 1,079,311. PlayStation 3 sales are up 35,209 (16%) to 220,084 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are up 23,489 (14%) to 193,794 units sold. The Wii U sold 82,277 units, an increase of 82,277 (24%). The Wii sold 70,428 units, an increase of 19,877 (39%).

Handheld sales week-on-week is up across the board. The 3DS sold 426,792 units, which is up 22,715 (6%) week-on-week. The PlayStation Vita sold 162,465 units which is up 91,289 (128%) compared to last week. The PSP is up 5,492 (12%) to 51,370 units sold. The DS is up 2,743 (23%) to 14,667 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 1,295,808 units (125%) to 2,336,397 units sold.

The PlayStation Vita is up up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is down 138,876 (-35%), the Wii is down 71,644 (-50%), and the Xbox 360 is down 280,116 (-59%). The PSP is down 25,243 (-33%), the DS is down 59,740 (-80%), the Vita is up 48,423 (42%) and the 3DS is down 1,576 (0%). Year on year sales are up 632,816 units (37%).

 

Home console hardware sales have increased for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii for four weeks and the Wii U for one week. The Wii U has outsold the Wii for nine straight weeks. The PlayStation 4 is the first home console to top the PlayStation 3 in 45 weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 49 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share; and the Wii has a 14 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has a 93 percent market share for the eighth generation and the Wii U has a seven percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four platforms (minus the PS4) are up.

 

Handheld hardware sales have increased for the DS for four weeks, three weeks for the PSP, two weeks for the 3DS, and one week for the Vita. The Vita has outsold the PSP for six straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has decreased this week to 264,000 units, from 333,000 units last week.

The PSP has a 78 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the DS has a 22 percent market share. The 3DS has a 72 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 28 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks all four handhelds are up.

Worldwide Software

11 games debuted in the top 30 this week, up from one last week. Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS4) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 808,779. The game launched in North America.

Battlefield 4 (PS4) launched at number four with sales of 455,387. The game launched in North America.

Killzone: Shadow Fall (PS4) launched at number five with sales of 408,216. The game launched in North America.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag (PS4) launched at number six with sales of 396,754. The game launched in North America.

God Eater (PSV) debuted at number seven with sales of 264,831. The PSP version debuted at number 19 with sales of 114,264. The game launched in Japan.

Madden NFL 25 (PS4) launched at number 12 with sales of 153,297. The game launched in North America.

NBA 2K14 (PS4) launched at number 17 with sales of 118,102. The game launched in North America.

Knack (PS4) launched at number 18 with sales of 118,102. The game launched in North America.

Need For Speed Rivals (PS4) launched at number 20 with sales of 108,226. The game launched in North America.

Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus (PS3) launched at number 22 with sales of 101,328. The game launched in North America and Europe.

FIFA Soccer 14 (PS4) launched at number 25 with sales of 89,554. The game launched in North America.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts:  Call of Duty: Ghosts (PS3) is at number two with sales of 726,738. Call of Duty: Ghosts (X360) is at number three with sales of 647,601.

Pokémon X/Y (3DS) is at number eight with sales of 233,266. Grand Theft Auto V (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 189,168 units. Battlefield 4 (X360) is at number 10 with sales of 167,906.

 

Software home console sales week-on-week is up for the Wii and Wii U, and down for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 sold 3.63 million games, a decrease of 2.05 million units (-36%). There were 2.75 million games sold for the PlayStation 4 in its opening week.  The Xbox 360 sold 3.16 million games this week, a decrease of 2.65 million units (-46%). Wii software sales are up 155,987 units (16%) to 1.10 million games sold. The Wii U sold 367,407 games, an increase of 33,822 (10%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week is up across the board. The 3DS sold 1.03 million games, which is up 92,495 units (10%). The DS sold 709,227 games, an increase of 89,950 units (15%) week-on-week. The Vita sold 436,501 games, an increase of 226,455 (108%). PSP game sales are up 152,632 units (69%) to 373,378 games sold. Total combined software is down 1.19 million units (-8%) week-on-week to 13.56 million.

Year-on-year software totals are up for PSP and Vita. The PlayStation 3 is down 3.72 million units (-51%), the Wii is down 625,011 units (-36%) and the Xbox 360 is down 6.22 million units (-66%). The DS is down 248,999 units (-26%), the PSP is up 152,632 units (55%), the 3DS is down 229,203 units (-18%), and the Vita is up 124,642 units (40%). Total combined software is down 7.67 million units (-36%) games sold year-on-year.

 

Home console software sales have increased for the Wii for five weeks and the Wii U for one week. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have dropped for one week. The PlayStation 4 launched with software sales just below the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

The PlayStation 3 has a 46 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 40 percent market share; and the Wii has a 14 percent market share. The PlayStation 4 has an 88 percent market share for the eighth generation and the Wii U has a 12 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four platforms (minus the PS4) are up.

 

DS software sales have increased for seven weeks, The PSP for two weeks and the 3DS and Vita for one week. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold more than two times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold nearly twice as many games as the PSP.

The DS has a 66 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 34 percent market share. The 3DS has a 70 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 30 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita, PSP and DS are up, while the 3DS is down.

Next few weeks will be interesting. One will debut strong as well, PS4 will get a big boost the following week, and WiiU may or may not be saved by Mario.

Doesn't make sense to say that the PS4 had 93percent of the 8th gen market if it only sold 1 million console. The wii u has sold over a million in the US. So it's more like half and half market share. If market share is 2 million total systems last week then Sony can only claim half not 93percent.
