Weekly Sales Analysis, 12 January - Sales Continue to Drop - News

Hardware sales decreased 54 percent this week to 655,636 units, from 1.44 million units last week. All platforms are down week-on-week. Year-on-year sales are down 32 percent. The Vita is the only platform up year-on-year.
No games debuted in the top 30 this week.
Software milestones this week in the top 30: Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) passed the eight million mark.
Worldwide Hardware
Hardware home console sales week-on-week are down across the board. PlayStation 3 sales are down 162,456 (-54%) to 138,205 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 70,296 (-41%) to 99,306 units sold. The Wii U sold 52,424 units, a decrease of 82,425 (-61%). The Wii sold 43,104 units, a decrease of 38,069 (-47%).
Handheld sales week-on-week are down across the board. The 3DS sold 209,704 units, which is down 285,429 (-58%) week-on-week. The DS is down 25,161 (-40%) to 38,523 units sold. The PlayStation Vita is down 50,991 (-57%) to 37,795 units sold. The PSP sold 36,575 units which is down 69,373 (-65%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are down 784,200 units (-54%) to 655,636 units.
The PlayStation Vita is the only platform up year-on-Year. The PlayStation 3 is down 89,304 (-39%), the Wii is down 102,742 (-47%), and the Xbox 360 is down 78,596 (-44%). The PSP is down 52,078 (-59%), the DS is down 24,190 (-39%), the Vita is up 18,039 (91%) and the 3DS is down 29,625 (-12%). Year on year sales are down 306,072 units (-32%).
Hardware sales have dropped significantly since the week ending December 22. Down anywhere from four to seven times per console. The PlayStation 3 has lead for the third straight week and the fourth time in 10 weeks. The Xbox 360 led for five of the other weeks and the Wii U for one.
The PlayStation 3 has a 49 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 36 percent market share; and the Wii has a 15 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all home consoles (minus the Wii U) are down.
Handheld sales have dropped significantly since the holiday peak. The 3DS is down nearly six times in the last three weeks. The 3DS outsold the Vita by nearly 6 to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more than 5 to 1. The PlayStation Vita barely outsold its predecessor, the PSP.
The DS has a 51 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds and the PSP with 49 percent. The 3DS has an 85 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 15 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PSP is up, and the DS, 3DS, and Vita are down.
Worldwide Software
No games debuted in the top 30 this week.
Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Call of Duty: Black Ops II (PS3) is at the top with sales of 117,420 units. Call of Duty: Black Ops II (X360) is at number two with sales of 111,749 units. Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) is at number three with sales of 84,506. Halo 4 (X360) is at number four with sales of 76,578. Anarchy Reigns (X360) is at number five with sales of 71,798.
FIFA Soccer 13 (PS3) is at number six with sales of 71,785. Just Dance 4 (Wii) is at number seven with sales of 70,665. Far Cry 3 (X360) is at number eight with sales of 66,391. Far Cry 3 (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 63,126. New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 58,926.
Software home console sales week on week are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold the most games this week with sales of 1.48 million, a decrease of 935,111 units (-39%). The Xbox 360 sold 1.48 million games this week, a decrease of 932,443 units (-39%). Wii software sales are down 568,478 units (-42%) to 785,403 games sold. The Wii U sold 112,263 games, a decrease of 152,832 (-58%).
Handheld software sales week on week are down across the board. The 3DS sold 536,751 games, which is down 749,397 units (-58%). The DS sold 441,619 games, a decrease of 309,039 units (-41%) week on week. PSP game sales are down 192,559 units (-55%) to 159,149 games sold. The Vita sold 102,636 games, a decrease of 88,290 (-46%). Total combined software is down 3.93 million units (-44%) week on week to 5.09 million.
Year on year software totals is up for the PlayStation Vita and down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 is down 304,235 units (-39%), the Wii is down 976,550 units (-42%) and the Xbox 360 is down 437,415 units (-39%). The DS is down 285,226 units (-41%), the PSP is down 217,829 units (-41%), the 3DS is down 61,102 units (10%), and the Vita is up 76,970 units (300%). Total combined software is down 2.09 million units (-29%) games sold year on year.
Software sales have decreased for a third straight week for all four home consoles. The PlayStation 3 has led for two straight weeks, however only by a little bit. The Xbox 360 led for the eight weeks prior.
The PlayStation 3 has a 40 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 39 percent, and the Wii with 21 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all four home consoles (minus the Wii U) are down.
The 3DS sold the most software for a handheld for the fourth week in a row. It has also led for seven of the last 10 weeks. The DS led for the other three weeks. The DS has remained well above the PSP.
The DS has a 74 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 26 percent market share. The 3DS has an 84 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 16 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all four handhelds are down.
