Weekly Sales Analysis, 13 October - Dishonored, XCOM

Hardware sales overall have remained flat this week, though the Xbox 360 and 3DS are the only platforms to be up, while everything is down a bit. Overall week on week hardware sales are down one percent. The 3DS continues to be the only platform up year on year, though the PlayStation 3 is barely down. Overall hardware sales are down 17 percent year on year.
Six games debuted in the top 30 this week. Dishonored for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC is this week’s top debut. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number two with sales of 475,609. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number three with sales of 331,607. The PC version debuted at number 14 with sales of 96,333. Software milestones this week in the top 30: Pokémon Black / White Version 2 (DS) passed four million sold due to being released in North America and Europe; Resident Evil 6 (X360) passed the one million mark; and Madden NFL 13 (PS3) passed the one million mark.
Worldwide Hardware

Hardware sales week on week are up for the Xbox 360 and down for the PlayStation 3 and Wii. PlayStation 3 sales are down 12,644 (-5%) to 224,679 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are up 1,233 (1%) to 155,428 units sold. The Wii sold 37,942 units, which is down 1,296 (-3%).
Handheld sales are up for the 3DS, and down for everything else. The 3DS sold 227,141 units, which is up 21,539 (10%) week on week. The PlayStation Vita is down 11,153 (-23%) to 37,707 units sold. The PSP sold 33,214 units which is down 3,940 (-11%) compared to last week. The DS is down 882 (-3%) to 24,836 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 7,143 (-1%) to 740,947.
The 3DS continues be the only platform up year on year. The PlayStation 3 is down 5,699 (-2%), the Wii is down 102,712 (-73%), and the Xbox 360 is down 35,965 (-19%). The PSP is down 55,974 (-63%) the DS is down 44,996 (-64%) and the 3DS is up 21,539 (29%). Year on year sales are down 156,277 (-17%).

Xbox 360 sales have increased for four straight weeks, while the PlayStation 3 and Wii have both decreased for one week. The PlayStation 3 has been the bestselling home console all year. The PlayStation 3 has a 54 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share; and the Wii has a nine percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are up, while the Wii is down.

3DS hardware remains well above its rival, the PlayStation Vita, outselling it by more than 6 to 1. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more than 19to 1, while the Vita barely outsold its predecessor, the PSP, only by 4,493 units. The PSP has a 57 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 43 percent. The 3DS has an 86 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 14 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and PlayStation Vita are up, and the DS and PSP are down.
Worldwide Software

XCOM: Enemy Unknown (PC) debuted at number 10 with sales of 117,067. The Xbox 360 debuted at number 12 with sales of 114,233. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number 18 with sales of 82,963. The game launched in North America and Europe.
Project X Zone (3DS) debuted at number 16 with sales of 88,627. The game launched in Japan.
Fable: The Journey (X360) debuted at number 24 with sales of 39,366. The game launched worldwide.
Tokitowa: Time and Eternity (PS3) debuted at number 28 with sales of 30,916. The game launched in Japan.
Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Pokémon Black / White Version 2 (DS) is at the top with sales of 1,421,023. FIFA 13 (PS3) is at number four with sales of 282,891. Resident Evil 6 (PS3) is at number five with sales of 256,028. FIFA 13 (X360) is at number six with sales of 198,325. Resident Evil 6 (X360) is at number seven with sales of 154,360. Just Dance 4 (Wii) is at number eight with sales of 148,452.

Week on week software sales for home consoles are up for the Wii and down for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PlayStation 3 sold the most games this week with sales of 2.44 million, a decrease of 1.68 million (-41%). Xbox 360 sold 2.32 million games this week, a decrease of 832,014 (-26%). Wii software sales are up 107,279 (13%) to 916,245 games sold.
Handheld software sales are up for the DS and 3DS and down for the PSP and PlayStation Vita. The DS sold 1.97 million games, an increase of 1.47 million games (292%) week on week. The 3DS sold 683,868 games, which is up 266,021 (64%). PSP game sales are down 81,461 (-25%) to 246,886 games sold. The Vita sold 103,773 games, a decrease of 60,282 (-37%). Total combined software is down 807,705 (-9%) week on week to 8.68 million.
Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, DS and 3DS, flat for the Xbox 360, and down for the Wii, and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 253,184 (12%), the Wii is down 558,637 (-38%) and the Xbox 360 is down 1,110 (0%). The DS is up 1.16 million (144%), the PSP is down 116,315 (-32%) and the 3DS is up 479,381 (234%). Total combined software is up 1.32 million units (18%) games sold year on year.

The gap between the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 software sales has shrunk to 120,297 units. The PlayStation 3 has led nine of the 10 weeks. The Xbox 260 led for that one other week. The PlayStation 3 has a 43 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 41 percent, and the Wii with 16 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 software sales are up considerably, while the Wii is down.

The DS software has skyrocketed this week due to the release of Pokémon Black / White Version 2 (DS) in North America and Europe. The DS has an 89 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 11 percent market share. The 3DS has an 87 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 13 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the DS, 3DS and Vita are up, while the PSP down.
