Nintendo Announces 'Customer Appreciation Sale,' Made Possible by 'Tariff-Related Refunds' - News

Nintendo of America has announced the Customer Appreciation Sale, which will run from September 13 to 26 across the Nintendo eShop, Nintendo Store, and participating retailers.
Dozens of Nintendo Switch digital games and bundles will be discounted by 30 percent. There will also be discounts on select physical games, downloadable content, accessories, amiibo, and apparel.
Nintendo did state the sale is made possible in part because of the tariff-related refunds it has received.
"The Customer Appreciation Sale is our way of saying thank you to Nintendo players for their continued support and is made possible in part by tariff-related refunds," said Nintendo. "While Nintendo absorbed most tariff-related costs, the refunds helped make promotions like this one possible.
"Thank you for being part of the Nintendo community. We hope you'll discover your next adventure during the Customer Appreciation Sale!"

While I get the gesture of the tariff refunds being behind this sale, having me spend more money doesn't exactly scream "customer appreciation"

Anything consumer friendly is a rarity from Nintendo these days, I'll be checking out if any of the Switch games I still want are on sale.
But yeah I get what you're saying, especially considering games going on sale is completely NORMAL outside of Nintendo games. So this is more like hey we'll put some games on discount like every other company does regularly but only as a one-time thing because we got illegal tariffs money back.

It's a sale, no it wasn't "made possible" by the refunds. It's something that's completely normal in the industry.

I don't get that interpretation at all and see your interpretation and conclusion drawn from your own interpretation as (let's be honest) more than a little overdramatic... like a post straight out of Twitter.
The way I see it is they were able to make back some of their losses from the illegal American tariffs, and to show their appreciation for the customers who have supported them, they're offering a discount sale. And that's because it's basically what they wrote.
Yeah, there's no way they could sell these digital games at 30% off without those tariff refunds. They'd go bankrupt.
Yikes, unless this is actually a bigger sale than usual that's practically a scam. Coating something they already do because it makes business sense as giving back to the customer is undeniably fishy.

Nintendo's real logic: Oh, we won't give you an eShop or Nintendo Store Credit for most or all customers. We just know you're probably going to buy more of our games and items anyway and will mark them down temporarily in a sale.
The real customer appreciation move would be Nintendo Selects for Switch and a credit for customers.

At this point, I'm not even asking for them to be $19.99. Even $29.99 would be fine.
30% is the usual discount Nintendo does, they had zero first party games in their last eshop sales. What should leave me to believe this is not just a normal sale with the usual discounts rather than something special because of the tariff refunds like they announced it to be?
I feel like giving everyone 1 free game that bought an NS2 in the past 18 months was the right way to go about this...

Lots of nintendo games sell low numbers, and a small amount sell very high numbers.
The low selling games also dont get discounted often.
That's because price competition is driven by competing products. On a PlayStation system there is a strong third party competition that drives down prices across the board. If another publisher is reducing prices to 50% off then you are forced to or you will sell nothing.
On Nintendo systems there is a strongly curated consumer base that plays mostly first party games. Meaning the direct competition for one Nintendo game is generally another Nintendo game. So, if you dont reduce the price of the other games then there is no reason to reduce the price of the new games to compete. It basically achieves something close to monopoly pricing within their ecosystem. Which is very good for them, but not for consumers. I wouldnt really be celebrating it, but maybe you're a major shareholder.

Most gaming fan circles have an extreme obsession with Sony. There relationship to this company is personal and that is unhealthy to both supporters and detractors.
