Overview

PlayStation Vita sales drop back down, after last week’s spike due to the release of Next Hatsune Miku: Project Diva in Japan. Hardware sales have dropped across the board week on week, with an average decrease of 14 percent. The 3DS continues to be the only platform up year on year. Overall hardware sales are down 38 percent year on year.

One game debuted in the top 30 this week. Lost Heroes (3DS) debuted at number 10 with sales of 31,939. Software milestones this week in the top 30: New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) has passed the two million mark; and Guild Wars 2 (PC) has surpassed one million sold.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware sales week on week are down across the board. The 3DS remains at the top this week with sales of 199,388 units, which is down 35,841 (-15%).  The PlayStation 3 is down 1,072 (-1%) to 119,366 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 2,333 (-2%) to 99,373 units sold. The Wii sold 40,397 units, which is down 6,755 (-14%). The PlayStation Vita sold 40,052 which is down 40,774 (-50%) compared to last week. The PSP is down 2,922 (-10%) to 25,529 units sold. The DS is down 11,062 (-4%) to 24,958 units sold. Total week on week sales are down 90,759 (7%) to 549,063.

The 3DS continues be the only platform up year on year. The PlayStation 3 is down 154,736 (-56%), the Wii is down 65,548 (-62%), and the Xbox 360 is down 36,834 (-27%). The PSP is down 72,558 (-74%) the DS is down 65,120 (-72%) and the 3DS is up 23,968 (14%). Year on year sales are down 330,776 (-38%).

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sales have decreased for one week, while the Wii has decreased for five weeks. Sales between the PlayStation 3 and the Xbox 360 have for the most part remained around 25,000 units apart for the last 10 weeks. The PlayStation 3 has a 46 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 38 percent market share; and the Wii has a 16 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.

The 3DS continues to outsell the other three handhelds combined. The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by nearly 8 to 1, while the Vita outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by 14,523. The PSP has a 51 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 49 percent. The 3DS has an 83 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 17 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS is up while the PlayStation Vita, DS and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

Lost Heroes (3DS) is the only game to debut in the top 30. The game debuted at number 10 with sales of 31,939. The game launched in Japan.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) at the top with sales of 236,965. Guild Wars 2 (PC) is at number two with sales of 189,076. Madden NFL 13 (X360) is at number three with sales of 173,105. Madden NFL 13 (PS3) is at number four with sales of 151,705.  Sleeping Dogs (PS3) is at number five with sales of 40,381.

Sleeping Dogs (X360) is at number six with sales of 37,233. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) is at number seven with sales of 36,372. Max Payne 3 (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 33,196. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) is at number nine with sales of 32,686.

Week on week software totals, just like with the hardware sales, are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 sold 1.48 million games, a decrease of 529,875 (-26%). The Xbox 360 sold 1.31 million games this week, a decrease of 628,514 (-32%). Wii software sales are down 52,312 (-6%) to 773,254. The 3DS sold 584,680 games, which is down 198,151 (-25%). The DS sold 488,928 games, a decrease of 28,847 (-6%).  PSP game sales are down 55,500 (-19%) to 231,976 games sold. The Vita sold 99,994 games, a decrease of 157,275 (-61%).  Total combined software is down 1.59 million (-25%) week on week to 4.97 million.

Year on year software totals, just like with the hardware sales, are down for every platform, except for the 3DS. The PlayStation 3 is down 984,917 (-40%), the Wii is down 388,863 (-33%) and the Xbox 360 is down 305,973 (-19%). The DS is down 235,678 (-33%), the PSP is down 75,008 (-24%) and the 3DS is up 300,566 (106%). Total combined software is down 1.65 million units (-24%) games sold year on year.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game sales have decreased for one week, while the Wii has decreased for three weeks. The PlayStation 3 has lead for the last 16 weeks. The PlayStation 3 has a 41 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 37 percent, and the Wii with 22 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are up, and the Wii is down.

The 3DS has led the handheld software sales for a seventh straight. The DS has a 68 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 32 percent market share. The 3DS has an 85 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 15 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS is up, and the DS, PSP, and PlayStation Vita are down.
