Overview

PlayStation Vita sales more than double on the release of Next Hatsune Miku: Project Diva in Japan. Hardware sales week on week are up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP, and Vita, and are down for the Wii, DS and 3DS. Overall sales are up seven percent week on week. The 3DS is the only platform to be up year on year, while overall sales are down 30 percent.

Eight games debuted in the top 30 this week. Guild Wars 2 (PC) debuted at the top with sales of 902,681. There are no software milestones this week in the top 30.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware sales week on week are up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP, and Vita, and are down for the Wii, PSP and 3DS. The 3DS is at the top this week with sales of 235,229 units, which is down 11,314 (-5%).  The PlayStation 3 is up 1,861 (2%) to 120,438 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are up 5,093 (5%) to 101,706 units sold. The Vita sold 80,826 units, which is up 47,569 (143%). The Wii sold 47,152 which is down 1,798 (-4%) compared to last week. The PSP is up 224 (1%) to 28,451 units sold. The DS is down 1,173 (-4%) to 26,020 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 40,462 (7%) to 639,822.

Year on year sales are up for the 3DS and down for every other platform. The PlayStation 3 is down 136,350 (-53%), the Wii is down 66,183 (-58%), and the Xbox 360 is down 34,606 (-25%). The PSP is down 78,926 (-74%) the DS is down 78,926 (-74%) and the 3DS is up 32,025 (16%). Year on year sales are down 277,207 (-30%).

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sales have increased for one week, while the Wii has decreased for four weeks. The PlayStation 3 has led every week this year and the Xbox 360 has been in second every week, except for the week ending January 7. The PlayStation 3 has a 45 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 38 percent market share; and the Wii has a 17 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Xbox 460 is up, and the Wii and PlayStation 3 are down.

The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more than 9 to 1, while the Vita outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by nearly 3 to 1. The PSP has a 52 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the DS has a 48 percent. The 3DS has an 74 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 26 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and Vita up while the DS and PSP are down.

Worldwide Software

Eight games debuted in the top 30 this week. Guild Wars 2 (PC) debuted at the top with sales of 902,681. The game launched in North America and Europe.

Madden NFL 13 (X360) debuted at number two with sales of 721,069. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number three with sales of 617,950. The Vita version debuted at number 20 with sales of 29,722. The Wii version debuted at number 26 with sales of 23,614. The game launched in North America and Europe.

Next Hatsune Miku: Project Diva (PSV) debuted at number five with sales of 159,688. The game launched in Japan.

Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (3DS) debuted at number six with sales of 71,231. The game launched in Japan.

Senran Kagura Burst: Guren no Shoujotachi (3DS) debuted at number seven with sales of 69,969. The game launched in Japan.

Kami Jigen Game Neptune V (PS3) debuted at number 15 with sales of 36,157. The game launched in Japan.

Mobile Suit Gundam Age: Universe Accel / Cosmic Drive (PSP) debuted at number 16 with sales of 34,839. The game launched in Japan.

AquaPazza: AquaPlus Dream Match (PS3) deubted at number 27 with sale of 23,504. The game launched in Japan.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include New Super Mario Bros. 2 (3DS) at number four with sales of 323,282.Sleeping Dogs (X360) is at number eight with sales of 69,010. Sleeping Dogs (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 59,385. Transformers: Fall of Cybertron (X360) is at number 10 with sales of 55,268.

Week on week software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PSP, 3DS, and PlayStation Vita, and are down for the Wii and DS. The PlayStation 3 sold 2.022 million games, an increase of 627,781 (45%). The Xbox 360 sold 1.96 million games this week, an increase of 608,819 (45%). Wii software sales are down 11,666 (-1%) to 824,812. The 3DS sold 788,782 games, which is up 38,709 (5%). The DS sold 515,888 games, a decrease of 33,072 (-6%).  PSP game sales are up 22,108 (8%) to 286,905 games sold. The Vita sold 266,816 games, an increase of 180,072 (208%).  Total combined software is up 1.43 million (27%) week on week to 6.67 million.

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and 3DS, and are down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 251,654 (14%), the Wii is down 359,869 (-30%) and the Xbox 360 is up 298,878 (18%). The DS is down 229,133 (-31%), the PSP is down 123,041 (-30%) and the 3DS is up 542,112 (220%). Total combined software is up 647,417 (11%) games sold year on year.

Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sales have increased for one week, while the Wii has decreased for two weeks. The PlayStation 3 has lead for the last 15 weeks. The PlayStation 3 has a 42 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 41 percent, and the Wii with 17 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are up, and the Wii is down.

The 3DS has led for a sixth straight. The DS has a 64 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 36 percent market share. The 3DS has a 75 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 25 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS, PSP, and Vita are up, and the DS is down.

I really enjoy your sales analysis, but you could do with someone proof reading it before you submit. In the first paragraph you say the hardware sales are up for the PSP, and also down for the PSP. I think you meant DS instead of the second PSP.

Still, very interesting week!

Holiday Sales are going to pick up soon, I wonder when we will see 360 sales top PS3, and I wonder how well Call of Duty and Halo will sell, ann what numbers the PS360 will end up with this year.
