Rockstar Games has announced the Grand Theft Auto VI: The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection box for $399.99. It will launch on November 19 and is available for pre-order while supplies last.
The box includes 11 pieces of merchandise. This includes a 6" figure, sunglasses, hat, crossbody bag, hat, mirror, shot glass, spoon, keychain, pin set, stash bag, and a poster with a map.
The collection box includes the following items:
- 6” figure of Macca the Gator with stash compartment
- Matte black GTAVI Oakley Frogskins sunglasses with Prizm Sapphire lenses
- New Era 9FORTY A-Frame snapback hat with Vice City Leonida embellishments
- Macca the Gator magnetic mirror
- Vice City swizzle spoon
- Vice City razor blade keychain
- Leonida Keys crossbody bag
- Chunkee the Manatee shot glass
- Leonida Keys enamel pin set in a custom metal tin
- Premium stickers in a stash bag
- Double-sided souvenir poster showcasing the full Leonida landscape

Half the people who buy this won't even open it up. It will sit on a shelf in the original shrinkwrap until they sell it on ebay in 10 years. The GTA Funko Pops will cost $500 and won't come with a copy of the game either. Collector junk has nothing to do with usability.

This not even close to being representative of the industry. It’s merch for one very high profile game for a niche collectors market.

To get a context of how ridiculously priced this bundle is, it costs £350 in the UK, which is virtually the same price as what a Nintendo Switch 2 costs right now there, as that console is on offer at the time of writing for £355.
Only an idiot would buy this. Sadly there are a lot of idiots.

That stuff probably doesn't cost even $100 to produce, and if all those were sold individually without "brand extra", I can't imagine it being more than $200 in total. That is absolutely insane pricing, especially since the game itself isn't included.
Oakley sunglasses and New Era Cap with game branding alone would cost over 200 but the question is if it is really necessary to push the price of a video game collectors edition that much with Oakley sunglasses. I mean, this is probably the biggest chunk of the whole edition. 90% of collectors will probably say that the figurine should be the outstanding thing and not sunglasses^^
Oh, I didn't know that. Still, I doubt those sunglasse cost anywhere near that price to product. I also bet they're included just to drive the price up. Also, I agree about the figurine.
Rockstar CEO - “You know what? People don’t care about having their games on a disc anyway, just give ‘em a code in a box, then we can save a few bucks there and not worry about resales”

it's as if this would be a joke they make in the game about the society and how stupid people are to overpay for useless stuff but instead they really sell it... Oakley glasses obviously push the price but still...

omg $400 just to buy merchandise for a game and not even the game itself. This is how much the game plus the system it plays on should cost, that's the way it used to be at least.

Selling collectors editions without the game actually makes a lot of sense when you stop and think about it.
You could argue the overall price is a poor value, but if they included the game, they would have just charged that much more for it. Splitting the pieces up gives consumers the option about whether they want to buy the game or not.
Why would someone buying the collectors edition not want the game? If they already own it of course. Someone who was on the fense about whether or not to get the collectors edition and later decides they would have wanted it. Or someone brand new to a franchise, tries it out, loves it, and then wants the stuff that came with the collectors edition. Those folks can get the collectors edition stuff without having to rebuy the game.
Assuming its advertised properly and its clear the game is not included, really don't see the downside.
The doenside is it's way overpriced. That price should have included a physical copy and a physical soundtrack collection. This would have been probably an ok deal at that price and those who haven't preordered yet some incentive to buy.

So sure. But that has nothing to do with selling the game separately. Regardless of the price, it would be better to sell it without the game and reduce the price accordingly.

Nah son. The logic doesn't check out. It's like when a collector's edition comes with an empty steel book case and a digital download code. Collectors, as implied by their name, like to collect things. Now they may need to buy a separate physical copy of the game just to put into that steel book. This collection doesn't even include the game. It's just branded merchandise.
If the logic doesn't check out, explain the problem with the logic. What you said is completely non-responsive to what I wrote.
If you want to play the game, you need to buy the copy one way or the other. Either its included in the price of the collection box, in which case Rockstar would have just charged 100 dollars extra, or you buy the game separately. Frankly, I don't see the difference.
Meanwhile, selling the collectors stuff separately from the game offers more options. For example, people who initially decided not to buy it, but later changed their minds. People who try a game, fall in love with it, and then want to play it. People who know someone who really loves the game and wants to get them the collectors edition stuff as a gift. Those folks can buy just the collectors stuff without paying for something they already have.
The complaint about the overall price may be valid. But, that's a completely separate issue.
So, assume the price of buying the collection box with the game would be the same as buying each separately. I.e. the collection box with the deluxe edition of the game would cost 500, the collection box without the game would be 400, and the deluxe edition of the game would be 100. How is selling the game separately a negative for anyone?
With that logic, they shouldn’t even make a collection, but just sell every item individually.
Yes. For the consumer that would be better if it would be the same price otherwise.
But it would be logistically a nightmare and would probably not be feasible.
