Activision-Blizzard Profits $335m(!) in the June 2011 Quarter - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 03 August 2011 / 5,366 Views

Activision-Blizzard results for the June 2011 quarter have arrived. The company generated revenues of $1.146b for the quarter, with profits coming to $335m.  Revnue and profit grew from $967m and $219m respectively in the June 2011 quarter.

Projections had called for revenue to reach $985m in the June 2011 quarter, with profit of $228m, meaning the company beat its revenue forecast by over $150m, and topped its profit forecast by $107m. Activision-Blizzard also raised its forecast for the year ending December 2011 to $4.18b in revenue and $816m in profit, from $4.05b in revenue and $732m in profit when projections were last discussed.

For the September 2011 quarter, Activision-Blizzard expects revenues to reach $650m, with profit coming to $60m.

Robert Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard, stated, "Our better-than-expected second-quarter performance was driven by record digital sales of our online-enabled franchises.  For the six month period, net revenues from digital channels grew more than 20%, driving record operating margin and EPS growth of more than 50%."

Kotick continued, "Looking to the balance of the year, while we have numerous releases we believe our audiences will be especially excited by three key properties -- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3™, our new online service Call of Duty Elite and Skylanders Spyro's Adventure™ -- all of which are shaping up to be incredible.  To date, pre-orders for Modern Warfare 3 have significantly exceeded the pre-orders for Black Ops at this time last year.  In addition, we believe that Call of Duty Elite, which was built for Modern Warfare 3 and is expected to launch with the game on November 8, should redefine social connectivity for multiplayer gaming.   Additionally, we expect that Skylanders Spyro's Adventure will change the way we look at toys and video games by bringing the world of toys, video games and the Internet together in an unprecedented way."

Kotick added, "Today, there are more ways than ever for players to access entertainment online and play games which have truly become one of the most compelling forms of entertainment in the world.

Activision-Blizzard cited the following as accomplishments for the quarter:

  • Call of Duty: Black Ops was the #1 game in the U.S. and Europe for the first half of 2011.
  • For the second quarter, Blizzard Entertainment had two top-10 PC titles with World of Warcraft®: Cataclysm and StarCraft® II: Wings of Liberty.
  • To date, Call of Duty: Black Ops players have logged more than 2.2 billion hours of online gameplay.
  • Total unique online gamers playing Call of Duty: Black Ops were more than 30% greater than the total unique online gamers who played Call of Duty: Modern Warfare® 2 during the first eight months after each game's release.
  • On May 11, 2011, Activision Blizzard paid a cash dividend of $0.165 per common share to shareholders of record as of March 16, 2011.
  • As of June 30, 2011, Activision Blizzard had purchased approximately 43 million shares of its common stock, for an aggregate price of approximately $479 million, under the $1.5 billion stock repurchase program authorized by its Board of Directors in February 2011.

Activision-Blizzard also provided a revenue breakdown by platform the quarter:

- Quarterly revenue for Activision-Blizzard reached $359m for online subscriptions (Blizzard content), $300m for X360 (including map packs, dlc, etc), $239m for PS3, $80m for PC / Other, $70m for Wii, $63m for distribution, $29m for DS, $4m for PSP, and $2m for PS2.

- In the previous June quarter, revenues were $291m for subscriptions, $240m for X360, $182m for PS3, $79m for PC / Other, $76m for Wii, $51m for distribution, $36m for DS, $9m for PS2, and $3m for PSP.

- Comparing the two sets of numbers, revenue increased by $68m for subscriptions, $60m for X360, $57m for PS3, $12m for distribution, and $1m for PSP and PC / Other. Since DS (-$7m), PS2 (-$7m), and Wii (-$6m) revenue only decreased slightly year over year, the major increases for other platforms amounted to a dramatically better quarter than 2010. As is usually the case, Activision's figures are largely tied to the non-console market anyway, with 47% of revenue for the quarter coming from sources other than X360, PS3, Wii, or PS2.

I find so strange that Blizzard and Activision could merge in one company. Both treat their games in such a opposite way. Activision is able to kill Guitar Hero franchise by releasing so many games in a small time and Blizzard takes many years to make a game, and if its not good enough they throw it a way and make it everything again untill its perfect, Blizzard release once in 2 or 3 years, actvision releases near every week.

Eliminate COD and World of Warcraft, and you eliminate Activision-Blizzard.

You forget Starcraft and Diablo...maybe not as big as WoW but easily enough to keep them on the map.

that's what delaying revenue to a later quarter does.
Basically the majority of the stuff is delayed Q4 2010 revenue and profit.......

No, if you eliminated COD and World of Warcraft, you only can eliminate Activision, not Blizzard

Because Blizzard still has Diablo, Starcraft and Classic Warcraft franchises maybe they could release Warcraft 4

Good for Blizzard but Activision deserves to burn.

well... blizz would make a profit even without wow... but it's true there is a high dependence on these 2 franchises now that guitar hero is out of the picture.
