VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.

This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.

Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Those Xbox sales are painful, getting your ass royally kicked by a console in it's seventh year is quite painful, whilst being in your third year. Playstation is sales are decent enough, though nowhere near what they should be to hit their target. Switch is doing quite well for its age and should hit 150 m next year around this time if Nintendo holds off announcing it's successor

Yeah, I feel like Sony is going to need to step up sales/bundles if they want to hit their goals. Doing a price INCREASE on the PS5 Digital Edition was probably not a good move either lol

You think the Switch will sell 18.8m in the next 12 months? Can I interest you in any kind of bet? 🙃

Machina Qwark (on 22 November 2023)

Switch would need to be up YoY for the next 12 months to hit 150m this time next year - that won't happen.

I was expecting more sales coming from the Switch this month since we had Super Marios Bros. Wonder's release

Well the switch has the power of an xbox one so i would not expect much.

CourageTCD moschefenty (on 25 November 2023)

Is there any hope for the Series platform in EU? Cutting prices may do something, but it needs more high quality games and this year saw a nice improvement of output from team green. It still makes me wonder if the ABK deal is keeping many in EU from picking one up out of spite for the deal and MS. On the flip side, while the console may be floundering, it seems they are making headway with mobile and PC users.

any ideal how gamepass is doing in EU?

I think really well from what my friends over there have told me.

ps5 sales appear low as sony reported 46.6 million shipments in september. But it shouldn't take long for it to be fixed soon before it releases 50 million

PS5 is the industry. Are we going to track the Portal separate too? Cause that thing had a very successful launch.

  • 0
moschefenty loy310 (on 23 November 2023)

  • 0
siebensus4 loy310 (on 23 November 2023)

I don't think that PS Portal gets tracked on VGC, because it's a peripheral device for PS5 and not an independent gaming system.

Machina siebensus4 (on 23 November 2023)

Correct, plus there won't be enough data beyond these first few weeks to produce decent estimates anyway.

interesting I was wondering about that.
