Weekly Sales Analysis, 21 September - GTA V Tops 17m Week One

Overview

Overall hardware sales increased by 31 percent week-on-week, due to the release of Grand Theft Auto V for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Week-on-week sales is up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Wii U, and DS, and down for the Wii, PSP, 3DS, and Vita. Overall year-on-year sales are up 46 percent.  The PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and 3DS are up year-over-year. The DS has the biggest drop year-on-year by percent, at 77 percent

Three games debuted in the top 30 this week, the same as last week. Grand Theft Auto V (X360) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 8.88 million units. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number two with sales of 8.64 million units. This is the biggest opening in gaming history. The game launched in North America and Europe.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Monster Hunter 4 (3DS) passed the two million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Hardware home console sales week-on-week is up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U, and down for the Wii. PlayStation 3 sales are up 219,182 (188%) to 335,789 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are up 106,368 (143%) to 180,669 units sold. The Wii U sold 33,964 units, an increase of 13,018 (62%). The Wii sold 18,996 units, a decrease of 1,048 (-5%).

Handheld sales week-on-week is up for the DS, and down for the PSP, 3DS, and Vita. The 3DS sold 249,321 units, which is down 121,572 (-33%) week-on-week. The PSP is down 22,154 (-6%) to 31,032 units sold. The PlayStation Vita sold 26,676 units which is down 2,480 (-9%) compared to last week. The DS is up 240 (3%) to 7,360 units sold. Total week on week sales are up 211,554 units (31%) to 883,807 units sold.

The PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and 3DS are up year-on-year. The PlayStation 3 is up 209,515 (166%), the Wii is down 20,272 (-52%), and the Xbox 360 is up 106,368 (34%). The PSP is down 28,440 (-48%), the DS is down 24,664 (-77%), the Vita is down 7,319 (-22%) and the 3DS is up 70,574 (39%). Year on year sales are up 239,415 units (46%).

Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales increased by nearly three times for the PlayStation 3 and more than double for the Xbox 360. Wii U sales have increased for one week, while Wii sales have decreased for two weeks. The PlayStation 3 has led for 37 straight weeks. The Wii U has outsold the Wii for 11 straight weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 63 percent market share for the seventh generation; the Xbox 360 has a 34 percent market share; and the Wii has a four percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii U are up, while the Wii and Wii U are down.

Hardware Handhelds

Handheld hardware sales have increased for the DS for one week. The 3DS has decreased for one week and the PSP and Vita for five weeks. The PSP has outsold the Vita for 12 straight weeks. The gap between the 3DS and Vita has decreased this week to 223,000 units, from 342,000 units last week.

The PSP has an 81 percent market share this week for the seventh generation handhelds, while the DS has a 19 percent market share. The 3DS has a 90 percent market share for the eighth generation of handhelds, while the Vita has a 10 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks the 3DS is up, while the PSP, DS, and Vita are down.

Worldwide Software

Three games debuted in the top 30 this week, the same as last week. Grand Theft Auto V (X360) debuted at the top of the charts with sales of 8.88 million units. The PlayStation 3 version debuted at number two with sales of 8.64 million units. The game launched in North America and Europe.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 (PS3) debuted at number four with sales of 131,225. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number 18 with sales of 22,786. The game launched in Europe.

Yahari Game Demo Ore no Seishun Love-Kome Hamachi Gatteiru (PSV) debuted at number 26 with sales of 16,837. The game launched in Japan.

Here are the other games in the top 10 that are not debuts: Monster Hunter 4 (3DS) is at number three with sales of 462,995. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX (PS3) is at number five with sales of 81,251.

Minecraft (X360) is at number six with sales of 64,426. Madden NFL 25 (X360) is at number seven with sales of 55,680. The Last of Us (PS3) is at number eight with sales of 55,564.Madden NFL 25 (PS3) is at number nine with sales of 45,391. Diablo III (PS3) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 37,932.

Software

Software home console sales week-on-week is up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U, and down for the Wii. The PlayStation 3 sold 9.77 million games this week, an increase of 8.33 million units (578%). The Xbox 360 sold 9.69 million games, an increase of 8.67 million units (854%).  Wii software sales are down 18,160 units (-5%) to 322,032 games sold. The Wii U sold 127,587 games, an increase of 5,396 (4%).

Handheld software sales week-on-week is down across the board. The 3DS sold 782,459 games, which is down 1.31 million units (-63%). The DS sold 195,265 games, a decrease of 27,441 units (-12%) week-on-week. The PSP sold 109,806 games, a decrease of 18,327 (-14%). PlayStation Vita game sales are down 17,734 units (-17%) to 84,741 games sold. Total combined software is up 15.62 million units (286%) week-on-week to 21.08 million.

Year-on-year software totals is up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and 3DS,, and down for the Wii, DS, PSP, and Vita. The PlayStation 3 is up 7.92 million units (424%), the Wii is down 176,143 units (-35%) and the Xbox 360 is down 7.66 million units (377%). The DS is down 92,825 units (-32%), the PSP is down 97,284 units (-47%), the 3DS is 356,539 units (84%), and the Vita is down 1,405 units (-2%). Total combined software is up 15.68 million units (290%) games sold year-on-year.

Software Home Consoles

Home console software sales have increased for the PlayStation 3 for two weeks, and the Xbox 360 and Wii U for one week. Wii software sales have decreased for four weeks.

The PlayStation 3 has a 49 percent market share, the Xbox 360 has a 49 percent market share, and the Wii has a yeo percent market share. Compared to ten weeks ago the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U are up, while the Wii is down.

Software Handhelds

3DS software sales have fallen after Monster Hunter 4 last week. The 3DS and DS have remained above their rivals, the Vita and PSP respectively. The 3DS sold nine times as many games as the Vita. The DS sold 44 percent more games as the PSP.

The DS has a 64 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 36 percent market share. The 3DS has a 90 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 10 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the 3DS and Vita are up, and the PSP and DS are down.

Those are crazy sales, GTA is so huge, it made so many people buy a new console just to play it.

Yeah, tried telling these COD noob's that COD is in no way possible more popular than GTA. COD only broke records all those years b/c other gaming series couldn't compete, in the last 2 years Battlefield 3 was the only game to reach 15mil sales.
