Overview

The PlayStation Vita had a big drop in its second week on sale in North America and Europe. Overall three games debuted in the top 30 this week. One Piece Pirate Musou (PS3) debuted at the top with sales of 664,000.

Software milestones this week in the top 30: Mario Kart 7 (3DS) passed the five million mark.

Hardware sales are down week on week across the board, except for the PlayStation 3 which is up slightly. Year on year sales are also down across the board. Overall sales are down by 33 percent week on week and down 27 percent year on year. The PlayStation 3 passes the 62 million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Week on week sales are down across the board, except for the PlayStation 3 which is up slightly. The 3DS is back at the top this week with sales of 204,000 units, which is down 39,000 (-16%).  The PlayStation 3 is up 4,000 (2%) to 200,000 units sold. The PlayStation Vita has dropped 337,000 (-67%) to 167,000 units sold. Xbox 360 sales are down 30,000 (-19%) to 128,000 units sold. The Wii sold 81,000 units, which is down 10,000 (-11%). The DS is down 10,000 (-18%) to 47,000 units sold. The PSP sold 43,000 units, which is down 26000 (-12%) compared to last week. Total week on week sales are down 428,000 (-33%) to 870,000.

Year on year sales are down across the board. The PlayStation 3 is down 21,000 (-10%), the Wii is down 90,000 (-53%), and the Xbox 360 is down 57,000 (-31%). The PSP is down 150,000 (-78%) and the DS is down 160,000 (-77%). However with the DS and 3DS combined it is up 44,000 compared to the DS one year ago. With the Vita and PSP combined it is up 17,000 compared to the PSP one year ago. Total year on year sales are down 315,000 (-27%).

Hardware Home Consoles

The PlayStation 3 has increased in sales for a third straight week, while the Xbox 360 and Wii have dropped after two weeks of increases. The PlayStation 3 has a 49 percent market share; the Xbox 360 has a 31 percent market share; and the Wii has a 20 percent market share. The PlayStation 3 is in first for a tenth straight week. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are down.

Hardware Handhelds

The 3DS has outsold its predecessor, the DS, by more than 4 to 1 and the Vita has outsold its predecessor, the PSP, by nearly 4 to 1. The DS has a 52 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 48 percent. The 3DS has regained the top spot for the next generation of handhelds with a 55 percent market share, while the Vita has a 45 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita is up, while the other three handhelds are down.

Worldwide Software

Three games debuted in the top 30 this week. One Piece Pirate Musou (PS3) has debuted at the top with sales of 664,000. The game launched in Japan, with no release date anywhere else.

SSX (PS3) debuted at number two with sales of 231,000. The Xbox 360 version debuted at number three with sales of 225,000. The game launched in North America and Europe, and releases in Japan on March 15.

Mario Party 9 (Wii) debuted at number 22 with sales of 45,000. The game launched in Europe and will release in North America on March 11 and April 26 in Japan.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Just Dance 3 (Wii) at number four with sales of 101,000. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) is at number five with sales of 91,000.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) is at number six with sales of 85,000. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3DS) is at number seven with sales of 80,000. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) is at number eight with sales of 67,000. Zumba Fitness (Wii) is at number nine with sales of 67,000. Uncharted: Golden Abyss (PSV) rounds out the top 10 with sales of 65,000.

Software

Week on week software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and DS, and are down for everything else. The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot this week with 2.59 million games sold, an increase of 424,000 (20%). The Xbox 360 sold 1.79 million games, a decrease of 112,000 (-6%). Wii software sales are down 58,000 (-4%) to 1.35 million. The DS sold 635,000 games, which is up 63,000 (11%). The 3DS sold 508,000 games, a decrease of 70,000 (-12%). PSP game sales are down 164,000 (-35%) to 303,000 games sold. The Vita sold 223,000 games, a decrease of 393,000 (2-64%).  Total combined software is down 310,000 (-4%) week on week to 7.39 million.

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and 3DS, and are down for the Wii, DS, and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 629,000 (32%), the Wii is down 691,000 (-34%) and the Xbox 360 is up 82,000 (5%). The DS is down 1.27 million (-67%), the PSP is down 534,000 (-64%) and the 3DS is up 306,000 (151%). Total combined software is down 31.25 million (-14%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

The PlayStation 3 takes the top spot in software sales for a sixth week in a row. The Xbox 360 led for the four weeks prior. The PlayStation 3 has a 45 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 31 percent, and the Wii with 24 percent. Compared to ten weeks all three home consoles are down.

Software Handhelds

The DS and PSP are both above their successors this week. The DS has a 68 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 32 percent market share. The 3DS has a 69 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita has a 31 percent market share. Compared with ten weeks ago the Vita is up, while the other three handhelds are down.
