Final Fantasy V localization story is actually more interesting than the game's actual story. While Square released the game in the land of the rising sun back in 1992 for the Super Famicom (the second game on the platform, Final Fantasy I through III were on the NES), the game was localized and shipped overseas on Playstation in 1999! An effort to localize the game was made by many publishers like Square itself, two Windows-based efforts by Top Dog (!) and Eidos (!!!) but all were eventually shot down, angering the fans. Square claimed that the game would "overwhelm" Western audiences and that it would be inaccessible, and I honestly can't blame them.
Final Fantasy V got the Job System already established by previous iterations, and built upon it, with very exciting results. The original game featured 22 classes (26 in the later Game Boy Advance port) but made the system much deeper. All characters started with the "freelancer" job and then branched out. If you had selected a Black Mage and had learned, say, Fira via spending Ability Points, after changing to a Monk, you can select Black Magic as a command and cast Fira, as a Monk. This system offered tremendous depth to the game, making character progression its strongest point by far.
That's not to say that the story is not good at all, in fact it is the best among those then released, including Final Fantasy IV, the first game in the series to try to be less impersonal. A millennium previous to the events of FFV, a dark mage named Enuo spread destruction in the world, eventually leading people retaliating against him. As he could not be defeated, the people split the World's four crystals (Earth, Fire, Water and Air) in two sets, splitting the world itself and locking Enuo for good. A new evil entity known as Exdeath emerged from the great tree all evil spirits had been imprisoned in, but was once again taken care of, by the "Four Warriors of Dawn" or "Four Vikings of Dawn", Galuf, Xezat, Dorgann, and Kelger.
That happened 30 years prior to FFV. Our story begins when the main character (yay, there actually is one) while investigating a fallen meteor comes across Lenna, and rescues her of being attacked. They find a man with partial amnesia, Galuf, among the wreackage and they head to the Wind Shrine (hosting the Wind Crystal of course). When they actually get there (with the help of Faris, the captain of the pirates) they are greeted by complete destruction of the Wind Shrine. An image of Tycoon, Leena's father and King, shows up and tells the group to protect the remaining crystals as they hold Exdeath from coming back to life.
Eventually, the party fails to do so and after Galuf regains his lost memory, the party heads off to the world Galuf is from, to stop Exdeath, who is already being unpleasant there. There, the party meets another "Warrior of the Dawn" Kelger, and with his help and after many trials, they stop Exdeath and save the world(s). The game's ending splits up depending on who survived the final confrontation with Neo Exdeath, Exdeath's final form.

Bartz
Bartz Klauser is the main protagonist in Final Fantasy V. He was raised by his father, Dorgann Klauser (yes, one of the "Warriors of the Dawn") as his mother had died by an unknown illness when he was three years old. He is 20 years old in the game's events. He's afraid of heights. He gets involved after rescuing Lenna from attacking goblins, in a quest to protect the crystals of the world. After failing, he and the rest of the party travel to Galuf's world to stop the awakened Exdeath.

Original Artwork of Bartz
In Dissidia, Bartz mimics the moveset of almost all the Cosmos characters, giving him a well-rounded, jack of all trades vibe. He initially borrows several abilities from Firion and the Warrior of Light. He searches the crystals with the help of Final Fantasy IX's Zidane Tribal. In his EX form, Bartz masters the Mime job and earns three gold stars above his head (!?). In this form, Bartz is blessed with Regen status and can perform a quirky, quick attack, "Goblin Punch". Lastly, in his EX burst "Spellblade-Dual-Wield-Rapid Fire", Bartz utilizes the weapons of all his allies and combines them with the power of the crystals' elements to perform a combination of attacks commonly used in the original game as well. He combines all of the used weapons into one, to smash his opponent.

Exdeath
Exdeath originated by all the evil spirits imprisoned withing a great tree in the Great Forest of Moore. Utilizing the power of the four crystals of the world, the previous "Warriors of the Dawn" banished the evil being in the parallel world for 30 years, until Final Fantasy V's party fails to stop his resurrection. With the help of Kelger and Galuf, the group manages to beat Exdeath yet again and save the world.

Exdeath in the original game
In Dissidia, Exdeath is a very slow character, balanced by his teleportation ability, reaching his enemies in an instant. He allies with Final Fantasy IX' s Kuja to tackle Bartz. In his EX mode, "Power of the Void" he transforms to his original, tree form (far more human-like than in FFV) and has the ability to regenerate his health over time, his guard attacks becomes faster to recover, and the number of counter attacks he can perform increases. Finally, in his EX Burst, "The Laws of the Universe mean Nothing!" Exdeath uses the power of the Void, to engulf his opponent in nothingness sealing the entrance with his own hands.

Seeing as Final Fantasy V never got released overseas for the SNES and that neither the GBA remake or the PS1 compilation set the charts on fire, many of you have not played this 90s gem. You can of course, wait for the rumored FFV remake Square-Enix has been preparing, but we haven't heard much of it lately. In the next chapter we have Final Fantasy VI, by many praised as the best Final Fantasy game ever made (mine is still IX). Featuring an amazing storyline, great graphics and musical score and deep battle and character development system and, of course, Kefka, it's certainly unmissable. See you tomorrow.

Bartz is looking a bit too feminine for my liking
Nice! But bartz looks kinda.... like a school boy, hes to skinny and that girly look hes got going kinda makes him look like a vally walker, but hes fighting style seems cool so maybe he'll turn out to be a cool character.
Again i've not played this Final Fantasy just like I through IV.
Great work! This is looking very good!
