Publisher Sony Interactive Entertainment and developer Santa Monica Studio recently announced the PlayStation 4 game, God of War, will launch for PC via Steam and Epic Games Store on January 14, 2022.

Sony Interactive Entertainment in a statement to ArsTechnica has confirmed the PC version of God of War has been outsourced to Jetpack Interactive, while the creators Sony Santa Monica oversaw the development.

Jetpack Interactive is a studio focused on porting games based in Vancouver, British Columbia. This is the first the studio has worked with Sony.

The PC version will have controller support and keyboard mapping customization. The DualShock 4 and DualSense wireless controllers, as well as other gamepads will be supported. There is also support for true 4k resolution, on supported devices, and unlocked framerates.

The PC version includes the following digital content:

  • Death’s Vow Armor Sets for Kratos and Atreus
  • Exile’s Guardian Shield Skin
  • Buckler of the Forge Shield Skin
  • Shining Elven Soul Shield Skin
  • Dökkenshieldr Shield Skin

God of War (2018) first launched for PlayStation 4 on April 20, 2018. The sequel, God of War Ragnarok, will launch for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 in 2022.

PC gamers, if you haven't yet had a chance to experience this game do yourself a favor and pick it up ASAP.

GOW was one of the best titles of last gen and a true testament to the care and quality that Santa Monica studios puts into their work.

Trust me, after those credits roll I don't think you will be disappointed.

Why would I want to pick it up ASAP, since that would mean me having to go out to buy a PS4 or 5, when I could just wait for it to hit PC in Jan?.

Also didn't you say the same sort of comment on the previous port article?.

As Soon As Possible is what ASAP means. That doesn't mean now. It will be possible in January, therefore Ninja's post is fine.

Also, Ninja likes to play a character on this website. Many of us do (I've definitely role played before lol).

Yes but he specifically said "if you haven't yet", which implies grab what's currently available, which would make sense in a sentence paired with "grab it asap", because that also makes sense with the fact that you can actually buy it asap rn on PSN.

I know, but it gets rather samey and a lil cringe to see the same character play out for half a decade.

As Soon as Possible (meaning January). If you haven't yet (meaning non PlayStation owners).

With Horizon: Zero Dawn, Days Gone, God of War (2018), and Uncharted 4 all ported to PC via external studios, except Days Gone, it makes me wonder what games will Nixxes be porting since they're now going to be the official PC porting developer for Sony.

Makes me think we got some BIG titles coming our way :)

That pretty must leaves Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us Pt.2, and Spider-Man. Unless Nixxes will be digging deeper into the back-catalogue first? Or unless they'll be doing something far more recent (Returnal?) first?

Great advertisement for the pc master race, they will surely buy ps4 or ps5 coz thats the home of great triple a games

Though they would have used the studio they bought for ports. Surprised.

It was probably too quick of a turnaround. This PC port would've most likely been going on by the time Nixxes was purchased. I'd say whatever titles that release after Uncharted 4 will be Nixxes

talks of purchase likely started even before they started the pc port =]

sure, but talks doesn't equate to work lol

Sure thing, the strangest thing is that they having negotiated a port and seeing the result would make more sense for purchase than just going and purchasing without any work done, based only on feedback of other 3rd parties.

Time for Sony to setup its own platform for game distribution. Why give money to Stem/Epic etc when they could make and sell the games direct themselves.

As salty as I may be for yet another PC launcher lol, I wouldn't mind if Sony enters the ring. They could even integrate the current PS Now desktop app into their own PC launcher.

Well Epic has billions, EA and Ubi also have a lot of money and neither of those 3 have improved their clients all that much, so I've no faith in Sony magically making a Steam level client, let alone wasting 5-10 years of snail time to reach that point.

That's true, I forgot that they already had PS Now on PC. Well, that's still a long way to go to having a full-fledged PC storefront. But you're right, it is something to build on at least. But when even EA and Microsoft sell their games on Steam, I don't see how Sony can fail to do so.

Why force customers to jump through another hoop and another possible layer of DRM?.

I'd rather just buy my games on Steam/GoG (DRM free would be the better choice), than using yet another barebones client that's only looking out for it's piddling cut.

If it is a substitute then it wouldn`t be another hoop and layer of DRM.

In my experience, PC gamers don't prefer to have their games all over the place. They prefer them all in one place, or a small number of places. Most want everything on Steam (or Steam and Game Pass, if they're subscribed to GP). They may tolerate GOG in addition, because there's no DRM on GOG games. But once you start adding in Epic Game Store, and Humble, and, and, and... well, at some point it becomes more hassle than it's worth.

Even EA, which had its own distribution system on PC (Origin), gave up and put their games on Steam, and also put EA Play on Game Pass and on Steam.

Even Microsoft, that has three existing ways of distributing games on PC (Windows Store, Game Pass download, game streaming to PC) also sells their games on Steam!

So Sony would have to feel enough people are willing to sign up for another store and download yet another client that the higher margins would be worth it, despite even EA and Microsoft deciding they had to support Steam. Seems unlikely that the money to create and support such a storefront would be worth it.

I agree with you and dont see a point on Sony releasing their own store or app for PC, I was just saying that being Sony own page it wouldnt add another hoop and DRM layer, it would be a different one from Steam not above it.

Chazore scrapking (on 25 October 2021)

Exactly. I mainly want my games on Steam/GoG because Steam has the featureset, most of my games are on there as well as my friends, and to top it off, Galaxy allows for cross client library unification as their main feature.

last thing I want is another client that's going to remain barebones for years and only selling said companies games and nothing else, no exciting features or mod support.

Chazore DonFerrari (on 25 October 2021)

It would be DRM, because I doubt Sony would create a client that's entirely optional like GoG and not requiring some form of connection at the same time, let alone playing entirely DRM free.

It would also mean creating a playstation account at the same time, which is something I don't really want to do, just to play some games on a client I'll barely use. This is why I'm against fracturing on PC in recent times.

All making a client does is benefit the one who created it, and in all honesty, I'm here to game, I'm not here to please the corp, the corp is always and will always be here to please me, the customer.

Surprised they didn't use Nixxes, but I'd imagine they are busy working on other ports/projects at the current time.

Just had to take a visit to Jetpacks website, and well...they haven't exactly done a whole lot, so this is likely going to end up being another one of those ports where folks have to keep a close eye on week 1 performance (A poor client roster from a near unheard of studio doesn't exactly instil confidence right off the bat).

This could be a good port or a bad one, but since SM is overlooking Jetpack's work, one would hope that they make sure jetpack do things to the note and do it well, since this is one of the big league ports (compared to Days Gone).

At least a year out, I wouldn't say this has been in the works since it released back in 2018.
