Next-Gen PlayStation VR Announced for PS5, Launches in 2022 or Later - News

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced will release a next-generation virtual reality headset for the PlayStation 5 in 2022 or later.
"Today, I’m pleased to share that our next-generation VR system will be coming to PlayStation 5, enabling the ultimate entertainment experience with more dramatic leaps in performance and interactivity," Sony Interactive Entertainment senior vice president of platform planning and management Hideaki Nishino said. "Players will feel an even greater sense of presence and become even more immersed in their game worlds once they put on the new headset.
"We’re continuing to innovate with our new VR system so that our fans can continue to enjoy the unique experiences that are synonymous with PlayStation. We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input. It will connect to PS5 with a single cord to simplify setup and improve ease-of-use, while enabling a high-fidelity visual experience.
"One of the innovations we’re excited about is our new VR controller, which will incorporate some of the key features found in the DualSense wireless controller, along with a focus on great ergonomics. That’s just one of the examples of future-proof technology we’re developing to match our vision for a whole new generation of VR games and experiences.
"There’s still a lot of development underway for our new VR system, so it won’t be launching in 2021. But we wanted to provide this early update to our fans, as the development community has started to work on creating new worlds for you to explore in virtual reality."

Absolutely. Wireless is the future for sure. Unfortunately, it seems that only Oculus is taking this seriously right now.
Maybe they'll add a wireless battery pack attachment later on.
While Occulus is doing wireless headsets like the Quest 2, it’s also a compromised experience compared to the wired options.
Compromised in some ways, but superior in others. I've used every major VR headset except the Index, going all the way back to Rift DK2, and I own PSVR. In my opinion, VR's biggest limiter is the cable. It is totally immersion breaking. Until they get that detail worked out, there is no way for VR to realize its full potential.
Once you go fully wireless, you wont want to go back.
Come on , guys. One step at a time. Multiple cords -> one cord is a big improvement. Maybe next gen will be cordless, but at the moment it's either not viable without compromise in quality, or it is too expensive for most consumers.
I'm glad to hear that Sony is sticking with VR. But, I could do without that single cable. Maybe a single cable running to a small box on my waist or something. But, no cables connecting to the system.
Because then you're not tethered to the machine. The biggest problem for VR, IMO, is that you get wrapped up in the cord when moving around. It kills immersion.
Some games don't need a ton of movement, so those are mostly fine. Others have you turning constantly, and wires don't work well for that. If the box is on your belt, that allows you to move pretty freely. And, even for games that don't have a ton of movement, that cord rubbing against your arms while you're flailing about is still immersion breaking.
