NPD: Switch is 4th Fastest-Selling Console in the US, PS4 is 3rd and Xbox One is 5th - Sales
by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 August 2019 / 9,119 ViewsNPD analyst Mat Piscatella has revealed via Twitter the Nintendo Switch after 28 months on sales is the fourth best-selling console in the US when you align launches. It is behind the Wii, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 4 after 68 months is the third best-selling console in the US when you align launches, with sales behind the Wii and PlayStation 2. Also after 68 months the Xbox 360 and Xbox One are fourth and fifth, respectively.
Piscatella does add that aligned launches doesn't tell the entire picture as the Xbox 360 ended up outselling the Wii and is the second best-selling console in the US, behind the PlayStation 2.
After 28 months in market, the Switch has the 4th highest time aligned Console installed base in US tracked history, trailing only the Wii, PS2 and PS4.

After 68 months in market, the PS4 has the 3rd highest time aligned Console installed base in US tracked history, trailing only the Wii and PS2. Xbox 360 and Xbox One are 4th and 5th. Home consoles in the US market continue to do very well on a comparative basis this gen.

Keep in mind time aligned doesn't tell one everything... Xbox 360 ended up selling more units lifetime than Wii and was 2nd all-time in home console sales to the PS2. It's just a good measure of overall momentum.

Just a few years ago, people were talking about the end of console gaming.....
After 28 months
PS4-~13 million
XBO-~11.5 million
We haven't gotten leaks for Switch last month but it was ~12 million after 27 months
28 months. That means 4 months over 2 years. That would give those other consoles their launch window period of the next year included, which were holidays. So Switch is lacking a holiday period in the numbers since its extra 4 months was in the spring. He should have just cut it off at 24 months to be fair.
So the switch is slowing down?
"According to the NPD Group, Nintendo's handheld hybrid console sold more than 8.7 million devices in the United States in its first 21 months of release, beating out rivals PS4 and Xbox One during the same period after their respective releases"
No, it's that by this point PS4 and Xbone had had 3 holiday seasons while Switch has had 2 due to their asynchronous launches
So Switch and 360 both on the 4th spot???
I had to re-read as well. Switch is 4th in 28 months while 360 is 4th in 68 months.
Ah, yeah, that's more clear now, thanks
We are are talking about the first 27 months.
Switch is well over 12 million, PS4 was at 12.64 million and XB1 was at 11.25 million (But XB1 and PS4 had 3 holidays VS Switch only having 2). 360 was at 9.38 million.
Now XB1 is at 25.22m VS 360 at 27.34m in the first 67 months.
Viva Switch <3 I love my switch and its great all growing gaming library <3 Switch is a BEAST!
Well, in week 99 the Switch was ahead of PS4 launch aligned http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=231512&page=1. It depends on when you look at the numbers... To make a line in month 28 is not fair, since one console launched in November and the other in March.
I understand that the layout reflects the order of his tweets but the headline is still kind of funny--"RUNNER Y RECORDS 4TH FASTEST TIME. Also of note, Runner X records 3rd fastest time."
In week 99 the Switch was 3M ahead of PS4 launch aligned. It depends on which time you look at the numbers. Month 28 is pretty unfair since one console launched in November and the other in March which results in different cycles when the holiday season hits. To make a line after 24 months would have been much more fair.
When you present the Xbox 360 numbers like this, it makes it look like it was the second best selling console of all time, but it's only the US market. 360 ended up getting beat worldwide by the PS3 by almost 2.5 million units.
US market isn't the only one that matters...
Context is important...
NPD only tracks american market.
Context seems pretty clear, considering its in the title, and mentioned in the tweets.
chokingvictim2 is right. It's very misleading! The (not enough at all) 10 times "US" has been used in this page should be replaced by "United States of America". It would clarify for everyone like chokingvictime2
