Weekly Sales Analysis, 17 December 2011 - Vita, FF XIII-2 - News

Overview

Sales have increased across the board and will peak next week. However following next week sales will drop rather quickly as the holiday season ends. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) is the biggest debut this week with sales of 539,000. Also the PlayStation Vita, the successor to the PSP, launched in Japan this week with sales of 322,000 in just two days on sale.

Software milestones this week in the top 20: Just Dance 3 (Wii) flies by the four million mark; Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) flies by the three million mark; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) passes 10 million sold in record time; Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) passes eight million sold; Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii) passes the one million mark; The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (X360) reaches the four million mark; Wii Sports Resort reaches 30 million sold; The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword (Wii) passes two million sold; and Assassin's Creed: Revelations (PS3) reaches the two million mark.

Hardware sales are up across the board week on week, while the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 are also up year on year. The 3DS, Xbox 360 and Wii all sold more than one million units this week. Expect the PlayStation 3 to also cross the one million mark next week. Hardware milestones this week: The Wii passes the 93 million mark; the Xbox 360 passes the 62 million mark; the PlayStation 3 passes the 59 million mark; and the 3DS passes the 12 million mark.

Worldwide Hardware

Hardware

Week on week sales are up across the board. The 3DS is at the top with sales of 1.49 million, which are up 191,000 (15%).  Xbox 360 sales are up 312,000 (37%) to 1.16 million sold. The Wii sold 1.03 million units, which is up 214,000 (26%). The PlayStation 3 is up 202,000 (30%) to 917,000 units sold. The DS is up 46,000 (14%) to 365,000 units.  The PSP sold 57,000 units, which is up 57,000 (21%) compared to last week. The Vita sold 322,000 units in its launch week in Japan. Total week on week sales are up 1.35 million (32%) to 5.61 million.

Year on year sales are up for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, and are down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 58,000 (7%), the Wii is down 386,000 (-27%), and the Xbox 360 is up 131,000 (13%). The PSP is down 197,000 (-38%) and the DS is down a massive 998,000 (-73%). However with the DS and 3DS combined it is up 493,000 compared to the DS one year ago. Total year on year sales are up 421,000 (8%).

Hardware Home Consoles

Home console hardware sales are up for a second week and the Wii and PlayStation 3 have beaten their black Friday sales. The Xbox 360 has a 37 percent market share; the Wii has a 33 percent market share; and the PlayStation 3 has a 30 percent market share. The Xbox 360 remains in first for a sixth straight week, the Wii and PlayStation 3 are in second and third for a fourth week in a row, respectively. Compared with ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up massively.

Hardware Handhelds

3DS remains well ahead of the DS and PSP outselling both of them combined twice over. It has outsold the DS by nearly 4 to 1 and the PSP by nearly 5 to 1. The DS has outsold the PSP for an eighth straight week. The DS has a 53 percent market share this week for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 47 percent. The Vita only just launching this week in Japan has just an 18 percent market share for the next generation of handhelds, while the 3DS holds the other 82 percent. Compared with ten weeks ago all three handhelds (excluding the Vita) are up.

Worldwide Software

Only one game debuted in the top 40 this week. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (PS3) debuted at number nine with sales of 539,000. The game launched in Japan.

Other games in the top 10 that are not debuts include Just Dance 3 (Wii) at the top with sales of 1.12 million. Mario Kart 7 (3DS) is at number two with sales of 858,000. Super Mario 3D Land (3DS) is at number three with sales of 847,000. Kinect Adventures! (X360) is at number four with sales of 773,000. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (X360) at number five with sales of 730,000.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (PS3) is at number six with sales of 675,000. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii) is at number seven with sales of 639,000. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (X360) is at number eight with sales of 561,000. Mario Kart Wii rounds out the top 10 with sales of 487,000.

Software

Week on week software totals is up for every platform, except for the 3DS. The Wii takes the top spot this week with 11.45 million games sold, an increase of 2.04 million (22%). Xbox 360 software sales are up 2.00 million (23%) to 10.69 million. The PlayStation 3 sold 9.11 million games, an increase of 1.85 million (25%). The DS sold 5.27 million games, which is up 809,000 (18%). The 3DS sold 3.65 million games, a decrease of 198,000 (-5%). PSP game sales are up 344,000 (33%) to 1.40 million games sold. The Vita sold 279,000 games in its opening week in Japan. Total combined software is up 7.12 million (20%) week on week to 41.85 million.

Year on year software totals are up for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and are down for the Wii, DS and PSP. The PlayStation 3 is up 2.45 million (37%), the Wii is down 2.49 million (-18%) and the Xbox 360 is up 3.03 million (39%). The DS is down 2.72 million (-34%) and the PSP is down 1.12 million (-44%). Total combined software is up 3.07 million (8%) games sold year on year.

Software Home Consoles

The Wii sold the most games this week, for the second week in a row. The Xbox 360 lead for six of the last 10 weeks and the PlayStation 3 lead for the other two weeks. The Wii has a 37 percent market share, the Xbox 360 with 34 percent, and the PlayStation 3 with 29 percent. Compared to ten weeks ago all three home consoles are up.

Software Handhelds

The DS continues to sell more games than any other handheld. The DS has a 79 percent market share for the current generation handhelds and the PSP has a 21 percent market share. The 3DS has a 93 percent market share for the next generation handhelds, while the Vita in its opening week has just a seven percent market share. Compared to ten weeks ago all three handhelds (excluding the Vita) are up.

Awesome to see the 3DS fly by a Million sold in one week and close to 1.50 Mil. sold! I'm so happy the 3DS passed 12 Mil. sold, too! :D

So...how do we check yearly sales for consoles on the new VGC? Weekly sales give total sales instead of annual now, and there is no yearly tracker.

If FFXIII-2 is a flop, imagine how much DQX will tank. I dont think Nintendo money hatting or VGChartz coverage can save it.
