Todd Howard: The Elder Scrolls VI is 'Our Focus as Far as New Development' - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 May 2024 / 13,437 Views

Todd Howard in an interview with IGN was asked if the plan is to still release The Elder Scrolls VI as the next main game from Bethesda, followed by Fallout 5 and he said the main focus right now on new development is The Elder Scrolls VI.

"I'm going to avoid putting dates on anything," said Howard. "I've learned that the hard way. So obviously, our focus as far as new development right now is Elder Scrolls VI, but that doesn't mean that we're not making plans for other things.

"We're still doing a lot of work, obviously on Fallout 76, and we see the community, so many people going into that game and kind of rediscovering it and just so happy with where that game is at. It really does, and I mean, this has one of the best communities in all of gaming.

"Surprisingly, it's a very, very nice apocalypse, and we're doing a lot of Starfield work as well. So we have some really good updates that are going to get announced soon for that game. So, a lot going on here."

The recently released Fallout TV series has been a huge success for Bethesda and Amazon Prime  as it currently sits at 94 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Fallout games available on Steam have seen a boost in player count following the release of the TV series. Fallout 76 achieved a new peak concurrent player count over the weekend with 39,455 players, while Fallout 4 saw a boost to 83,491 concurrent players and Fallout: New Vegas reached a peak of 19,505 concurrent players.

The Fallout TV series also helped boost sales for the Fallout franchise across Europe last week. Fallout 4 was the best-selling game in Europe as sales increased 7,500 percent compared to the previous week. The game did see discounts on all platforms as a promotion for the Fallout TV series.

The rest of the Fallout franchise also saw a boost in sales with Fallout 76 coming in at number eight, Fallout: New Vegas in ninth place, and Fallout 3 in 10th place. The Fallout Classic Collection is in 43rd place, Fallout 2 is in 57th place, and Fallout is in 70th place.

"The Elder Scrolls IV is 'Our Focus as Far as New Development'" So I guess they're working on Oblivion again, huh? :P

Well, according to the leaks last year, the same studio that is assisting Konami on their Metal Gear Solid 3 remake (Virtuos) is developing an Oblivion remaster/remake right now, with Bethesda providing oversight/assistance, and we've also heard that a Fallout 3 remaster is being worked on by some studio right now. But I would assume the dev team makeup right now at Bethesda is probably something like 30% Starfield DLC and updates, 15% Fallout 76 updates, 10% Oblivion and Fallout 3 remaster assistance, 45% TES 6 development. Once Starfield support is finished, most will be on TES 6.

Oh really? I don't think I've heard about either of those remakes. Hopefully the leaks end up being true.

Remasters, not remakes. Remakes would be far more expensive to make and take a lot longer.

They have zero need to do a remake.

Morrowind/Oblivion/Skyrim/Fallout 3/New Vega/Fallout 4 all use a derivative of the Net Immerse engine turned Gamebryo turned Creation, which has a significant amount of compatible interoperability.

They can port an older game to the newer engine easy enough and get the benefits of a more advanced lighting model automagically.

It's when they start updating models and textures and start implementing materials and ray tracing that they would start to blow out the development time.
There is a reason why Skyblivion has been in development for years.

I agree with you on that point there. Also thanks for clarfying why skyblivion's development is taking so long.

Sorry I meant to say remasters. Remakes seem far less likely given the size of both games.

I just don't get how the sales of these games don't justify expansion of another team for Bethesda.

Starfield sold 10 million + as of last September. Probably a good amount higher now.

Skyrim has sold 60+ million.

Fallout 4 was at 25 million a while ago, probably much more now.

And none of these factor in Gamepass revenue or dlc revenue.

This company either pays their employees way more than the industry average or they are too stuborn to expand too much. There is absolutely no financial logic that I can see in them not making another studio so they can have two AAA new games being made at all times, not including smaller teams helping external studios. out with remasters.

For whatever reason Todd Howard seems deadset on directing all Bethesda games himself, even though he is now in his early 50's and will probably be looking to retire within the next 10-15 years. Now would be the perfect time for him to start training the next generation of directors at Bethesda by co-directing TES 6, Fallout 5, and Starfield 2 with intended replacements for each of the 3 IP. I really wish he would do that instead of insisting on being the sole director on TES 6 and not expanding the studio enough to work on TES 6 and Fallout 5 at the same time.

So it's a quality control thing. Maddening.

I wonder who will be the inheritor of Todd Howard's legacy?

Josh Sawyer is perfectly capable of handling fallout, really hope he gets to make another fallout game

Starfield has not sold 10 million +, it has reached 13 million players. SteamDB estimates range but most likely on PC it has sold somewhere around 3-4 million. On Xbox most people probably played it on gamepass

True but I'd definitely prefer they work on the next ES game given how long we've already waited for it.

And that's "only" 6 years after it was announced. What a legend XD

Hopefully they acknowledge the starfield criticisms to make ES6 even better

I think the fact that you wont have to go from planet to planet will help. Would be nice to see some real ship/pirate combat implemented. If they were smart they would try to go after that market.

Well at least ES6 will take place on one world with less loading screens I hope.

Bethesda is such a joke nowadays. At least the Fallout series turned out great.

Currently playing through Starfield and damn i love what Bethesda do with their games. Not into Fallout and Elder Scrolls, but after playing SF, i am not keen to try it.
