Cut the Crap, Capcom - News

by Jake Weston , posted on 25 July 2011 / 8,049 Views

You know, I never minded Capcom's (somewhat suspect) business practices. Their endless re-releases of popular fighting games? Fine, new characters, more balance, more stages, sounds good. Appeal to Western audiences by redesigning their core franchises? Whatever, gotta do what you go gotta do. Cancelled Mega Man Legends 3? Eh, couldn't care less.

It wasn't until now, though, that Capcom has done something that has truly bothered me. In a recent interview with Destructoid, Marvel vs. Capcom 3 producer Ryota Niitsuma spoke on the reason to make Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 a disc-only release as opposed to releasing the new characters as downloadable content:

After the release of Marvel vs. Capcom 3 there were plans to release DLC. But, as you know, less than a month after the game was released we had the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. That had an impact on everything, and it threw off our whole development schedule. We decided that instead of doing the DLC we could put it all together in one package, add some additional stuff to make it robust and deliver it as a disc.

All I have to say is...seriously, Capcom? As much as I'd like to stay objective for the sake of journalism, I feel like it's my responsibility to call Capcom on their hypocrisy here. Capcom has always been known to re-release their games with extra content and characters; are we really expected to believe that this was the one time they weren't going to? There wasn't any tsunami preventing Super Street Fighter IV from a DLC release, and Capcom decided well before the tsunami to make Dead Rising 2: Off the Record a full disc release.

Plus, it just doesn't really make sense. I'm no programmer, engineer, or corporate executive, but I feel like organizing, programming, coding, packaging and shipping a whole new disc to thousands of retailers worldwide is a bit more complicated than simply uploading DLC online that people can download at their leisure.

Just to make sure that the tsunami really didn't have an adverse affect on Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3's status as DLC, here's a nice little list of Japanese-developed games that have enjoyed DLC since the earthquake and tsunami hit.

  • Capcom's own Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition
  • BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II
  • Various demos, such as Atlus' Catherine
  • Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy
  • Square Enix has also released downloadable ports of Final Fantasy III, IV, V and VI

I don't care that Capcom is coming out with Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, we all pretty much expected it. What bothers me is Capcom using the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami, arguably the most devastating natural disaster in the country's recorded history, to cover themselves over something we all knew they were going to do anyway. In essence, they are using it as a PR-shield, and it's absolutely disgusting that Capcom would behave in such a manner.

I expected better from you, Capcom.

When I read the articles title I figured it would be a piece detailing the many, many mistakes and missteps Capcom have made recently, including but not limited to:

The apparent self harming of the Mega Man franchise, cancelling Mega Man Legends 3 and Mega Man Universe, among other signs.

Not including the option to delete saves in Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D.

Monster Hunter Portable 3rd likely not being released in the west.

DRM requiring PSN users to be be online to play a few of their download-only titles such as Bionic Commando: Rearmed 2.

Outsourcing Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City to Slant Six Games and the Devil May Cry reboot to Ninja Theory. Among other things.

Unfortunately, I was met with a piece written by someone who was appalled and apparently offended that Capcom used the japan disaster as reasoning for a desired course of action. An action we knew was likely, if not destined to happen. Disappointing article.

His argument might need some polish, but his point is valid.

Capcom does seem to be using the natural disaster as a "do what we want" card. We know how Capcom operates by now. If they would have just said, "we are doing a full disk release for balance" and other things that are quite difficult to do with a patch or DLC, yeah fine.

They instead anticipated the fan backlash over a disk-only update and used the tsunami as a scapegoat. Honestly, their excuse would have meant the opposite. It is much harder and expensive to go through the whole disk printing production than doing a digital release.

Probably just the signs of a cultural difference yet again with Japan taking major baby steps towards this "new-fangled internet thingy".

This article should have been about any one of the "less annoying" things you mentioned in your first paragraph instead of some silly comment. Maybe then it could have been taken seriously. At its current state it reads more like abuse of your status as a writer then anything of journalistic value.

thepowell (on 26 July 2011)

Perhaps as a journalist you're overlooking one major advantage of disc release for the average gamer: Used Copies!

The more I see DLC and download-only titles, the more I worry I won't be able to get my gaming on the cheap any more. I LOVE it when would-be DLC titles get disc treatment, because it means that a bit of patience gets me major discounts.

SSFIV Arcade is going to be super cheap on eBay pretty soon, and I already nabbed Undead Nightmare on disc for cheap. Heck, I even bought the entirety of Orange Box used for the same price that Portal: Still Alive sells for as DLC.

Well i dont care because you know whats going to happen. No one is going to buy that game, the franchise loses fans and future sales and Capcom losers lots of money for making such a move.

Its not like people are going to blindly buy this game like you have to.

What, your're complaining about no DLC now? DLC is the epitome of what is wrong in the industry, now Capcom decides to release something on disc, and you complain?!

Cut the crap, VGChartz. And leave the editorial articles to the big boys, because obviously seeing the quality of the recent editorials you no have no idea what you are talking about.

thetonestarr (on 26 July 2011)

I prefer the whole "disc release over DLC" thing, so that's a good thing IMO. Especially since it's budget-priced and will probably cost less than if they released all that content as DLC instead.

I agree with Hephaestos in that there's totally a lot worse stuff they've been up to lately.

You just never buy a Capcom game until it was re-re-re-released for the last time to get the definitive version, thats how i always did it.

I bought the special limited edition of Marvel vs. Capcom 3. Gee... sure glad I did that.... Not like it was made completely obsolete by a new, say, "ultimate" version or anything.

elcido (on 26 July 2011)

It's only 39.99 and they fix the balance issues to make it more competitive, it will be the version of the game used in tournaments like EVO and other competitions. Could they have done this with updates? Probably, but at least you know for a fact your playing the true competition version instead of taking someones word they they installed the updates that fixed the balance issue.

Black RL (on 26 July 2011)

It's not CAPCOM, it's the all industry, and it isn't their fault, the ones to blame are the ones that keep buying DLC at day one, DLC at day two and re-re-re-re-re-mastered games.

Stop buying and they will stop the crap, simple.

How is this a bad thing? This is such a little issue, at least Capcom is still making extra content, instead of canceling it all together.

In fact, if they made a disc expansion, like Dead Rising: Off The Record, that would be awesome. I'd much rather own a full large scale hard copy expansion, then a bunch of digital downloads.
