Infinity Ward Acknowledges CoD Hacks, Blames PS3

by Harry Monogenis, posted on 16 January 2011 / 17,168 Views

A Creative Strategist from Infinity Ward has spoken on behalf of the development team and has acknowledged the recent outburst of hackers on Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty 4.

Robert Bowling gave a little in-sight into how this has happened, informing readers of the post that it's to do with the recent "breach of security" on the PlayStation 3 -- something I'm pretty sure you're all familiar with at this time.

"Games rely on the security of the encryption on the platforms they're played on, therefore; updates to the game through patches will not resolve this problem, unless the security exploit itself is resolved on the platform. Regretfully, Call of Duty games are receiving the bulk of the hacker's attention, due to its high player counts and popularity. However, the number of legitimate players severely outweighs the bad apples," he wrote.

He then carried on by assuring those affected --or worried about being affected-- that they are doing everything in their power to fix the problems.

"Let me assure you, while we are very reliant on Sony updating their firmware and security to address the core problem of this issue. We are looking at EVERY option available to us to help any user affected."

For the full statement, head on over to the source.

Activision sucks... CoD games sucks....

heruamon (on 19 January 2011)

Lol...

Ail (on 19 January 2011)

Besides the fact that there is something Activision can do against the hacks. it's called hosting dedicated servers that they police...................

Ail (on 19 January 2011)

So what exactly can the hackers do on the PS3 that they can't do on the PC ? Nothing.. And to think that a while ago they were thinking of charging players for the online, glad they didn't do it...

ssj12 (on 19 January 2011)

So hackers on PC are caused by the PS3's breach. Thats news to me.

irtz (on 18 January 2011)

@AussieGecko but u can play pirated games on 360 but i agree with u ps3 hacking case is different

Silver-Tiger (on 18 January 2011)

@indodude: There is no cheating software on the PS3. If people can unlock stuff everything without cheating software, than for me these are bugs, glitches. Last time I've checked MW2 CoD4 were developed by Infinity Ward, not Sony. So if anyone is to blame, it's IW alone, and only IW.

draamazing (on 18 January 2011)

Fuck Someone Stop The Fucken Nerds There Taking Over With There Hacks!

AussieGecko (on 18 January 2011)

what is with the spammers atm? lili37 s links are spam btw

MozBlue (on 18 January 2011)

Surely the people that should really be getting blamed for this are the hackers!

@thisismeintel Link to where 0verflow said they were helped by previous hackers?

AussieGecko (on 17 January 2011)

@irtz the xbox still isnt hacked the way the ps3 is about to be. People have the master keys to ps3 and apparently psp2 because of ps3 but not the 360

irtz (on 17 January 2011)

wat theres no link between Ps3 hack and cod hack its totally different. This guy is gone mad xbox 360 was hacked way before Ps3 and call of duty games were realeased and many ppl played it on hacked xbox and blame Ps3? wtf

IrishCollie (on 17 January 2011)

Some people are missing the point its not about when the console was hacked its about the severity of which its hacked and considering I logged in over 16 days on MW2 and about the same on MW and have never been in a hacked lobby but, less than 5 hours into MW2 on the ps3 and I had already been in 6 and thats a fucking joke. This has seriously soured the PS3 for me and I only got it for christmas but, I guess ill just stick with the exclusives which to be honest I'm fine with because they're brilliant but the rest of my games will be on the 360.

scat398 (on 17 January 2011)

As much as some people are trying to say this is a non-issue it actually is very serious to the online gaming community. Everyone knows that MW2 has been hacked on PC's and modded 360's, but this the first time it's come to a console where the console make can't do anything about it. MS instantly perma-bans modded 360's when they pop up online and they don't go anywhere near a public online match because they know it will be the end of their console . But with Ps3 jailbreak you have much larger problem. From what we understand modded Ps3's can hide themselves from Sony and since Sony doesn't charge for it's online service it has little invested in stopping hackers from destroying the online gaming experience. Trying to say this is the fault of infinity ward is just silly any changes they make to try and stop the hacks can be undone on the modders end since they control the code now. This is Sony's problem and I don't know if their is answer unless Sony plans to a do a complete redesign of it architecture or begin investing in an online security team similar to that of xbox live, either will cost millions in investment. Personally I think Sony should begin charging for online and use the money generated to create a competent online service that can police it's community.

chris100185 (on 17 January 2011)

At least they finally admitted there was a hacking problem.....only took them a year. Now if only they'll own up to and fix the rest of the problems.

soso57 (on 17 January 2011)

maybe you can find answers here: ========= <a href="http://tinyurl.com/23lm6pa"> http://tinyurl.com/23lm6pa/</a> =========

vr6GOLFr32 (on 17 January 2011)

So hacks that have been apparent for years in every CoD game are due to the PS3's recent hack?? Is anyone else seriously tired of hearing the bullshit that comes out of these devs who develop CoD

Michael-5 (on 17 January 2011)

Kind of true, but this is only recent on the PS3. Although hacking is significantly more minimal on the 360 version, thats been going on for years. Regardless, just be glad that Naughty Dog are better developers then Infinity Ward, and all will be well.

thismeintiel (on 17 January 2011)

@ dsister Yes, the removal of OtherOS brought more hackers to the PS3, but there were still hackers already there trying to break it since launch. Geohot was just starting to get past some of the security on the PS3 using OtherOS and that is why they thought removing that feature would stop them. Of course it didn't. Regardless, Geohot and Team failoverflow were still helped by previous hackers attempts.

dsister (on 17 January 2011)

@thisismeintel The people that hacked the PS3(team 0verflow) hacked it because Sony removed the OtherOS. The PS3 was safe from the majority of skilled hackers because they already had what they wanted. They could use homebrew off of Linux. Sony royally screwed up when they removed it so they brought the wrath of the homebrew seekers

indodude (on 17 January 2011)

@ Silver-Tiger, um, MW2 for PS3 is filled with people that have every single thing in the game unlocked. Ever heard of Challenge Lobbies? Also, I've joined games where people are activating EMPs in the first minute or so. None of those are exploits, glitches, or whatever.

Silver-Tiger (on 16 January 2011)

AFAIK, there isn't any cheating software for the PS3, yet. So it's the usual Acivision talking out of their asses. And if you buy Activision games, it's your own fault.

Icyedge (on 16 January 2011)

Im pretty sure they can ban PS3s, not just the PSN accounts. With that said, I dont know if they already have a way to detect the consoles running pirated software.

thismeintiel (on 16 January 2011)

@ dsister How did the hackers start after the removal of OtherOS and yet OtherOS was removed because of hackers? It's one or the other. And yes, it took 4 years to hack the PS3. While these specific hackers may have only recently started to try and hack the PS3, there have been others that have been trying since its launch. The new ones have been helped by these other hackers' previous work. @ pearljam Just about everything gets hacked. I have a little known handheld from China called the Dingoo. It has a relatively large hacker community behind it who have put Linux and tons of apps/games on it. And as far as I know, every single console to date has been hacked. Don't try to discredit Sony keeping hackers at bay for 4 years, saying something ridiculous as "no one wanted to hack the PS3 til now." I'm sure a lot wanted to, especially considering it had "TEH CELL." I'm sure they wanted to unlock it 100% to see exactly what that baby could do.

Goddbless (on 16 January 2011)

Being that you don't pay to play on PSN I don't think banning accounts will have the same effect as it does on XBL.

4lc0h0l (on 16 January 2011)

And so it begins... i just hope sony grows a pair of balls and start banning hackers... i dont care if they pirate their games, just dont fuck PSN plz

PearlJam (on 16 January 2011)

People that keep saying it took 4 years to hack are completely wrong, it took less than a year. The thing is people were never really looking at it, while the 360 had a big target painted on it before it even launched. Think of all the mod chip makers that were making a living from the original xbox, there was an entire industry gunning for it. MS is public enemy #1 to Linux hackers, but Sony has gone a long way to make themselves targets this gen. The PS3 security is a joke, it's now more open than the 360 or Xbox ever were.

pacman91 (on 16 January 2011)

This is quite interesting. I thought blu ray was supposed to curb this.

ps3 sucks and 360 rules

dsister (on 16 January 2011)

@thisimeintel The people that actually hacked the PS3 started a little while after the removal of OtherOS. So ~6months I take it

This is what Vgchartz considers news lol what a fail. Anyway Cod Was being hacked far before the PS3 was Jailbroken.

PullusPardus (on 16 January 2011)

Goddamn VGchartz stop with this bullshit... there is a reason why i never take any "News" seriously in here.

Badassbab (on 16 January 2011)

Yep agree with the post below, misleading title to grab attention and visits. Tut tut for tabloid rag tactics.

MasamuneChad (on 16 January 2011)

I read the forum post for this and I see nowhere it saying that Infinite Ward is directly blaming the PS3 for the hacking. They state that they will be taking more measures in future games because this has shown that they can't rely on console security anymore. The title of this article is misleading.

thismeintiel (on 16 January 2011)

@ linkasf You do realize it took these guys over 4 years to hack the PS3, right? How long did it take the 360 and Wii, 4 months?

tripleb2k (on 16 January 2011)

haha what a lame attempt to take the heat off themselves and put it on Sony.

szerbijn (on 16 January 2011)

omg teh ps3 is shit lolz xbox 306 ruleZ!!!! Now we all know that the other consoles are free of hackers. Fuck yea.

Killy_Vorkosigan (on 16 January 2011)

Hacks and cheats in COD existed before the hack. The argument given by AW/activision is just to feed the trolls and blame it on somebody else but themselves for bad decisions. It's the lack of dedicated server that prevent you to set your own rules and ban cheaters.

AussieGecko (on 16 January 2011)

try the Xbox360 is not wide open. Only the ps3 is

AussieGecko (on 16 January 2011)

The is not actually wide open. The fact that you can burn games has nothing really to do with the system. The main system is still what it should be to a large extent. Sony won't be that way very soon. Secondly ban hammer won't do shit, people will just create a new account, its not that simple on the Xbox for example where you have to pay for it or pc where they will ban the cd key.

fighter (on 16 January 2011)

"Every commenter that said they will rather play it on XBOX 360 have no idea what they are talking about. All consoles have been hacked, including PC. Playstation 3 was the last one to be hacked. I love it when people make comments that are absolutely invalid." Talking about invalid comments. The hacking does affect all consoles but in very different ways. The Live Network has never been as sensitive to hacking as the PSN is now and increasingly so.

prime (on 16 January 2011)

GO George Hotz!!!

mantlepiecek (on 16 January 2011)

Well, all sarcasm aside, I do hope none of this happens on the PS3 exclusives. And yes, it can be stopped by infinity ward and the respective developers of games.

almcchesney (on 16 January 2011)

wow how immature, ive been following the ps3 hacks very closely they dont even have lvl2 memory function, so how do they expect that in a short amount of time they have miraculously created hacks when the 360 is completely open and has been for years

jkudlacz (on 16 January 2011)

Every commenter that said they will rather play it on XBOX 360 have no idea what they are talking about. All consoles have been hacked, including PC. Playstation 3 was the last one to be hacked. I love it when people make comments that are absolutely invalid.

Rafux (on 16 January 2011)

Banhammer!!! Do it Sony.

Winters (on 16 January 2011)

I firmly believe that Sony is going to wield an their iron fist and put out a few new updates and so on. The battle is on and Sony arent going to stand by and watch a group of selfless hackers take down the perfect system.

Linkasf (on 16 January 2011)

The guy that hacked the PS3 should get hired by sony to make their next platform more secure seeing that their own team couldn't do a damn thing.

Mordred11 (on 16 January 2011)

Lol @ the troll comments,so obvious.

morpheusx (on 16 January 2011)

Sony needs to learn how to swing the Ban Hammer the way MS does. I sense soon we will get software keys the way we do with windows + a validation online. Oh the joy.

Mr Puggsly (on 16 January 2011)

One of the many benefits of a free online gaming community.

Baalzamon (on 16 January 2011)

Well, I haven't noticed anything drastic in Black Ops, but should I, single player games, HERE I COME!

ghost_of_fazz (on 16 January 2011)

It's not the PS3's fault (Yeah, me saying that is... weird), because there are systems like Punkbuster, Valve Anti-Cheat and Warden on the PC, which in theory should be easier to cheat on. Don't be lazy Infinity Ward. A hack by a 21-years old guy can't beat the methods of a big company... right?

indodude (on 16 January 2011)

And in less than a few months time there will be Challenge Lobbies in Black Ops :| Oh well, I just hope these guys don't go for Killzone 3.

Lyrikalstylez (on 16 January 2011)

I just wanted to get into playing online for my ps3, I guess Ill stick to my 360 then

Chairman-Mao (on 16 January 2011)

Too bad they can't blame PS3 for how bad MW2 was.

kingofwale (on 16 January 2011)

yes, blame PS3. because thank GOD that Wii, xbox and PC versions are still safe and hacked-free F YOU!!!

Acevil (on 16 January 2011)

This sucks, it seems from now I have to stick with online titles on the 360....(I wanted to stop paying for xbox live....well guess you get what you pay for)

Wagram (on 16 January 2011)

George Hotz neds to go lose badly. It was never about fucking homebrew.

Dr.Grass (on 16 January 2011)

Yeah, you see!? ''OH, we just hacked the PS3 for homebrew.'' ASSHOLES. Fry that hacker idiot.

Burning Typhoon (on 16 January 2011)

@BenVTrigger Well, you've just canceled my copy of KZ3.

mantlepiecek (on 16 January 2011)

I am sure teh linux will cancel this out.

kitler53 (on 16 January 2011)

the homebrew community hard at work ... to make sure i can't enjoy the video games i buy. awesome.

BenVTrigger (on 16 January 2011)

This hack on the PS3 sucks for everyone trying to have a fun, even playing field while online. I really hope hackers don't target Killzone 3 thats about to come out cause I'll be playing online extensively with that game and would hate to see some of the stuff in there that is currently plaguing Call of Duty.

abhiram_33 (on 16 January 2011)

sony needs to fix this problem and the hack on the ps3 by george

axumblade (on 16 January 2011)

It's strange because the only games I've heard of having these issues have been the Call of Duty games and they are making it seem like it is something very common now with most games. Of course it could just be more obvious in Modern Warfare because it's such a popular game.
