The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

May 2026 is the 67th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.39 million units.
In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 1.24 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 4.12 million units.
The PS5 has sold 92.34 million units in 67 months, while the PS4 sold 96.46 million units. Month 67 for the PS5 is May 2026 and for the PS4 is May 2019.
The PS4 crossed 100 million in month 72, 105 million in month 74, and 110 million in Month 79. The PS4 sold 117.20 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 24.86 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales.

It's just a comparison for the sake of comparison. People buying lots of PS4's and still using them today in the tens of millions doesn't hurt Sony in any way.
Will be interesting to see if GTA6 leads to a bump before year-end, or if the higher prices will bury the longer-term sales.
The gap might increase. PS5's best hope to sail past PS5 by the end is to be offered as a "budget" console when PS6 launches.
PS4 software and features have been supported immensely since PS5 launched but console sales dipped a ton and for all we know PS4 was discontinued globally around 2024.
