Angry Birds Downloaded Over 50 Million Times - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 14 December 2010 / 3,903 Views

It looks like Rovio is going to have a happy holiday this year.

Rovio recently told CNBC that their popular title Angry Birds has been downloaded over 50 million times, along with some other impressive stats for the breakout hit.

Angry Birds comprises 20 percent of all iPhone app sales, according to CNBC. The HD version of Angry Birds is also the best-selling iPad app of the year, along with 30 million downloads of the ad-supported Android version.

Combine a new series of official plushies and Rovio's holiday-themed Angry Birds offerings, and you have the foundation for a powerful franchise that came off a $100,000 development cost.

Checked the linked story, the 20% figure is mobile games' share of all App Store sales, not Angry Birds' share of anything.

And I wouldn't put too much stock in that assertion without a source, either. I suspect the actual share of games is higher and CNBC is just talking about the percentage of listed titles, not actual sellthrough.

Sounds like a miscommunication. As popular as it is, there's no way that Angry Birds is 20% of the App Store's business, however you want to slice it.

They probably meant that 20% of those 50 million downloads are paid iOS downloads. The rest are free iOS downloads (demos) and Android and Ovi Store downloads. That's in line with previously released data on Angry Birds sales.
