Armored Core 5 - Huge Info Blowout, Screenshots, 2010 Release! - News

Yeah baby.

Today, the doors came flying off on Armored Core 5 info. I blame Nineball Seraph (Famitsu combined with Toshifumi Nabeshima, AC5 producer).

So, Nabeshima talked. And he talked a lot. Mainly about how AC5 will be different from previous Armored Core games and what we should expect from AC5 - and I'll summarize.

  • Stages will be more "three-dimensional" (supposedly, he means that they'll have more height to them) and they'll also be more detailed for the purpose of increased immersion - he gives the example of having signs along the roads. While they disappeared in the latest AC games, they actually were there ever since AC1.
  • The changes in stage make-up and height create strategic attack and defense opportunities. Nabeshima's suggestion was hiding in the shadows and waiting for your opponent so you can take him by surprise. He must have not played his own games online - there is not a radar or targeting system that will not detect an opponent in the shadows. However, a blade lunge from above ground can be useful as far as I see it.
  • One of the reasons for smaller mechas this time (5 meters in height instead of 10) is added complexity in the stages - from a height of 10 meters, you're unlikely to see the details according to Nabeshima. Smaller mechas also create new strategies - you can retreat into back roads and hide beneath an overpass, for example.
  • Now, this could be a good thing, or a bad thing. More realistic mechas. All AC games up until now have had absolutely gorgeous mechas, stylish and sleek. Just pop AC: FA in and check it out for yourself. In fact, they were so gorgeous, that Nabeshima feels that they don't look as too much of a weapon - as a result, the new AC's will look more like "weapons" thanks to the new parts offered being more realistic. Even so, I don't know what's more of a weapon than a 10 meter tall killing machine. You just can't go wrong with it.

The ultra-realistic flaming chainsaw! Oh, Nabeshima...

  • Another change is multiple mission objectives. Also a "good or bad" kind of change for your hardcore AC fan (such as myself). Back in the day, when you completed your main objective, you were done. "Target Achieved". Remember? Now mission objectives will change as you progress with your mission. Nebeshima believes it'll provide for more dynamic missions, and he is right. AC had something similar to this before - you jump into one mission, only to be ambushed, chase someone unexpectedly, and etc. It always made the experience more dynamic.
  • With more complex, and I assume, bigger, stages you could lose sight of your objective area - but there's a system that'll get you back in there, says Nabeshima.
  • Online battle experiences will change thanks to bigger stages and smaller mechas. The overall online experience will also change, too - Nabeshima promises a variety of stuff beside combat, but didn't say what we should expect. Oh well. Combat alone was enough, I can't wait to see the other online changes.

Online will change, but explosions will remain. Sounds good to me!

The last thing I should talk about is the bonuses you'll get if you pre-order Last Raven Portable for the PSP - I guess that's for Japan only. You'll get a sweet artbook with 60 pages of Armored Core Portable designs plus the first ever visuals and design images for Armored Core 5, a disc with an interview with producer Toshifumi Nabeshima and game designer commentaries, and a special card including a code that lets you download some "special content" through a special campaign site launched after AC5 release. The stuff included isn't specified.

Like I said yesterday, the game is only 20% ready, but it's already looking damn good.

See what I mean? I don't even know what's happening here, but it's looking good.

They really have made them small, haven't thay?

Expect it to annihilate your PS3 and Xbox 360 soon enough!

Been a fan of AC games since the beginning of the franchise; and here I was thinking I could get off light this year with some VERY picky choices, but this is a must-have for me.

"Expect it to annihilate your PS3 and Xbox 360 soon enough!"

Is it really appropriate for a contributor to troll the hardware quality of the HD twins?
