Sega: Madworld And House of the Dead: Overkill Doing Just Fine On Wii

by Gabriel Franco, posted on 07 April 2009 / 5,842 Views

Sega seems to be really happy with their relationships with Nintendo and surely Wii owners are happy with Sega, the company published two of the most violent games in the Wii to satisfy the Hardcore players, both M-Rated games were critically acclaimed but what about the sales?

The game already holds the "world record" for having the most foul language, but what about reaching an even more important goal, like sales?  Seems like Sega is happy with how House of the Dead: Overkill is performing, and does this mean a sequel is coming?

VB: Sega is also going after the core audience with games like House of the Dead: Overkill and Mad World. How are consumers responding to those Mature-rated titles?

SR: House of the Dead has done very well and has absolutely met our expectations. The first set of data for Mad World is very encouraging, as well.

VB: Do you see franchise potential for Mad World with sequels?

SR: If it resonates with the audience, yes, we absolutely want to make that into a franchise. I think it’s unique, and there are many aspects of that game which are sort of pushing boundaries. And it’s just great fun.

I think that Sega really wants create a userbase, and be of course the master pillar for them.

amp316 (on 09 April 2009)

But House of the Dead: Overkill doesn't always do just fine on my Wii. Sometimes the framerate is horrendous.

richardhutnik (on 08 April 2009)

For no particular reason... Madhouse of the Deadworld: Overkill. It is a game where you shoot black and white zombies that shoot out lots of red blood. It is a beat'em up on rails.

famousringo (on 08 April 2009)

@ jjappleby Oh, I appreciate that Overkill has good replay value, but achievements and unlockables don't represent much labour on the part of the dev team, and therefore, not much cost. My point was that the game was probably really damn cheap to make, and therefore really easy to recoup costs.

Onimusha12 (on 08 April 2009)

How about puting games on the Wii with expectations of selling more than a million eh Sega? You know, ones that aren't Sonic? Just a thought.

yuexxx (on 08 April 2009)

My name is Mr. Ford Dead space 1.6 millons not met expectations House of Dead Overkill over 200.000 and met expectations This is the truth

DOLBYdigital (on 08 April 2009)

I believe these games will sell even more as time goes on. With a price drop they should see even more sales. I really hope Platinum Games gets the chance to make a SEQUEL to MadWorld since it is a lot of fun. I'll take any games from Platinum Games since I just love those devs :)

Red4ADevil (on 08 April 2009)

Overkill gets good reception, its in the guiness world records, and now sega is pleased with its sales (though its declining) whats next?

DaCountOfFat (on 08 April 2009)

This is like Call of Duty: World at war - a lot of people just insisted that the game had bombed even though it eventually passed a milion - it's like a lot of gamers can't accept that third party games can do great numbers and meet expectaions on the Wii, and just want them to bomb.. I'm sure all of Sega's and other third party ventures will contiue to have good sales on the Wii as longs as it's good qulity titles..

jjappleby (on 08 April 2009)

@ famousringo I wanna say dude, iv had house of the dead overkill for about 2 months now, i dont bash games, so i dont want to complete them in hours, the thing is with house of the dead there isent just the story mode, u got directors cut, dual weild, and then the whole collecting all the achievements, which could take up to 30 hours, plus its a top game with your friends, if sega bring another one out, they should have a wave minigame in it where theres no time limit, thts the only thing i didnt like about HOTD

rgame1 (on 08 April 2009)

overkill has been in wii charts for ages.

Scoobes (on 08 April 2009)

Glad to hear it, I haven't tried Madworld but HotD Overkill is great! It's one of the few Wii games my girlfriend actually enjoys other then Wii sports.

justinian (on 08 April 2009)

I really can't see madworld costing much money to develop. I was hopeful of better sales but wasn't sure it would have sold well simply by the content of the game, including the B/W look. At the same time these could have been it's strongest selling points. Now I see it (madworld) as more of a "paving the way" for more adult/mature titles on wii. Whether you buy it or not, like it or not, word is out that the wii does have games kiddies should avoid. Anyway, maybe Sega are happy because they have already cover cost on madworld. HOD:Overkill I am sure will crawl on to 700,000+ sales.

sungson (on 08 April 2009)

sega did good bye making games that are rated well with the critics but they gots to make game that reach the total audience. i think going for a m rated for the sake of m rated is wrong especially if it is a new franchise that no one knows about, it is not like grand theft auto. they should try to reach rated r that will hit a lot of people and will not discriminate a lot of wii owners.

Blackmagic5814 (on 08 April 2009)

Alot of U guys are talking like U have the NPD numbers fo March

wichdog69 (on 08 April 2009)

@ conman15 I agree I bought both madworld and HOTD overkill and I like them both. If sega keeps bringing em I'll keep buying em. Fanboys can bitch and moan all they want.

CONMAN15 (on 07 April 2009)

This is good to hear. Hopefully we see more from sega. There doing a great job so far, very happy with them.

Seferoth75 (on 07 April 2009)

@games fanboy, Great point but sadly the people calling it a bomb will continue to do so. It doesnt matter what the publisher says, it is all a lie. They just cannot accept that Wii games sell just fine and dont need the sales of PS3/360 games to make their money back, or that the numbers posted here are not 100%. Sega would know more about it than anyone else.

Galaki (on 07 April 2009)

I don't care what SEGA say. The intertubes already decided they bombed.

arsenicazure (on 07 April 2009)

SEGA games usually have a lot of legs.. these titles will sell 500k+ very very slowly

Ari_Gold (on 07 April 2009)

@ kylie i agree. I also assume they had very very low expectations if they really are being met.

Omega_Phazon_Pirate. (on 07 April 2009)

It's funny how the majority of this site thinks that not selling one million is an automatic fail and somehow generates no profit.. Most people consider No More Heroes to have bombed (sold around 400K according to VGC), yet apparently the publishers threw a party because it was considered a success, and they even said if it's successful, they would make a sequel, and they are :D.

Games fanboy (on 07 April 2009)

Remember de blob on wii that had awfull sales numbers here until thq announced there actual sales around 700 000.

Games fanboy (on 07 April 2009)

Everybody knows that vgchartz aint always right on there numbers :) Thats why there sometimes is write ups and write downs. I have seen madworld in the top 5 for 2 weeks on multi format sales charts and are a bit suprised on the low sales numbers on vgchartz ? But that could be that they calculate there numbers on an limited number of resellers that might not sell that many madworld or hotd. Simply that this site aint always right but gives you an pointer on how sales goes.

chriscox1121 (on 07 April 2009)

if they are happy about these sales...then they will throw a party when conduit comes out.

sirroman (on 07 April 2009)

@llewdebkram: No, Sega don't give a damn. They only care how much it sells and if Amazon wants to buy more.

NJ5 (on 07 April 2009)

@Dazkarieh: They'll just wait for the Conduit, it's not too far away.

Dazkarieh (on 07 April 2009)

Hahaha... now what about PS360 fanboys are going to complain about? Damn you Sega, for crushing so many peoples' fantasies!

TheCompletist (on 07 April 2009)

They can't possibly be happy. If this was an HD console game everyone would call them out for their undeniably crappy sales and say, a) This is PR spin because no-one runs TV spots for a game which is set to lose to Valkyria Chronicles in sales, and b) "Why don't third parties support the Wii instead of haemorrhaging money on low user base consoles?" Btw I had to look on the Wii-only sales chart to find this game (because it's not in the overall Top 50 in its third week of release) and even I was surprised by the amount of pure casual fluff I found there.

YusukeUnlimited (on 07 April 2009)

Dang if they could get sonic back on track they could potentially become one of my "favorite" 3rd party companies again.:)

blunty51 (on 07 April 2009)

@maynard my sentiments exactly

llewdebkram (on 07 April 2009)

I'm not sure the store price makes any difference to the publisher. The publisher sells it for set price and the retailer sticks whatever price they think they can get on it. So I don't think Sega make any less when it drops from £29.99 to £17.99 on Amazon.

sabby_e17 (on 07 April 2009)

sega have been putting in hard work lately

Maynard_Tool (on 07 April 2009)

Well, if they are happy... and I'm happy with the games.... everything else doesn't even matter

Hyperion (on 07 April 2009)

@kylie Can you ever say....anything that's even remotely.....ugh....

Vil3 (on 07 April 2009)

@trestres well 180 000 is pretty good for a light gun game in 7 weeks...i

JGarret (on 07 April 2009)

@averyblund and Essos Well, about Madworld..he did say 'the first set of data', meaning initial results have pleased him, but now that it´s dropping very fast maybe he isn´t so happy anymore, who knows..

Abalistar (on 07 April 2009)

This is great to hear. I'm sure neither game had a giant budget to recoup, but it's times like this that I wish the video game industry was a little more open about their production budgets.

EssosDeeos (on 07 April 2009)

Madworld was down to £20 in Game today - they can't be happy with that.

Jumpin (on 07 April 2009)

House of the Dead 2+3 has sold at an only marginally faster rate than Overkill. In addition, it's been out for over a year; cost about half the price of Overkill, has a Christmas season under its belt, and has the most popular game in the series included (House of the Dead 2).

3rdcoast (on 07 April 2009)

the games was cheap to make

famousringo (on 07 April 2009)

I think both of these games were cheaper to make than most people seem to think. There's what, ten hours of content between the two of them? One of them was monochrome, for crying out loud. The title for this news item looks a little... incomplete.

averyblund (on 07 April 2009)

@KylieDog I think they are happy because it is still selling for $50. 2+3 was $30. So tracking a little lower is to be expected, and they have a lot of potential with a sales drop. I don't get Madworld though. I can't see how they could be happy with those numbers.

dark_gh0st_b0y (on 07 April 2009)

this means that Wii games should not sell a million in order to profit ^ ^ _ SEGA is great, and i'm sure MadWorld will keep on selling, like House of the dead overkill

griffinA (on 07 April 2009)

@kylieDog You mean the House of the Dead 2+3 Return that also did most of it's sales under the $50 price point?

Jumpin (on 07 April 2009)

I love House of the Dead: Overkill. MadWorld not so much my type of title. I am just a regular gamer though; NOT some sort of a hardcore gamer.

KylieDog (on 07 April 2009)

What crap. Overkill is tracking worse than 2+3 Return. 2+3 Return...the years old games already released on multiple other consoles and that was just a port with no extra features or anything added. ...and they are happy a completely new game cannot even match that? I can only assume they had very very low expectations if they really are being met.

Demoki (on 07 April 2009)

maybe sega knew the gaming public would be too dumb to buy them so didnt expect much, hence they are meeting expectations

trestres (on 07 April 2009)

But.. They bombed!!!!!!! Great job SEGA.

BoneArk (on 07 April 2009)

Great job Sega! I can't wait for The Conduit. =)
