Our pick of the top 7 games of the year so far:

Mass Effect 3
Score: 9.4

Mass Effect 3 provides an epic, emotional, and stunning conclusion to an unprecedentedly personalized trilogy. By combining the best of previous titles, BioWare has delivered not only the greatest game in the series, but an early contender for game of the year. Disappointments over the ending, as well as a couple other minor storytelling gripes may be disheartening to some, but don’t let that hold you back from immersing yourself in one of the most profound experiences in gaming.

Beat Sneak Bandit
Score: 9.2

As with the majority of iDevice games, Beat Sneak Bandit won’t burn a hole in your wallet. The game will only set you back $2.99 in the US and £1.99 in the UK. In my humble opinion, at these kinds of prices, it's an absolute steal. It’s a testament to the mobile gaming industry when you see stellar games such as this available for such a small amount. Beat Sneak Bandit is a game that will charm your socks off if you give it a whirl. So, if you're on the fence, I suggest you get down and try a game that's a little different but a lot of fun.

Kid Icarus: Uprising
Score: 9.2

It feels as though, since fans had to wait over twenty years for a Kid Icarus game, Project Sora have made a game with over twenty years' worth of fun to make up for the wait. The learning curve of the controls aside, this game is a pure gem. It has set the bar for visuals, sound, and content, not just for Nintendo, but for any 3DS title. In my opinion, it's not just worth owning, it's worth buying the system for. Games like this are why I game.

Rayman Origins (PSV)
Score: 9.1

Rayman Origins is a testament to creativity when compared to many contemporary offerings. The art direction is unmatched and the level design rivals even that of my all-time favorite platforming titles. I may not have the kind of attachment to the Rayman character that I do to Mario or Donkey Kong, but based on the virtues of this title alone, I am certainly going to be doing all I can to keep up with this series from now on. My recommendation is to get this game any way you can; the episodic nature of platformers compliments Vita perfectly, but if you don't have a Vita or are particularly keen on co op, pick it up on consoles. If you don't have this game (and the sales show you probably don't), then you need to remedy that now.

Journey
Score: 9.0

Personal, simple and intriguing. It's probably the closest gaming has ever been to making two players feel like Frodo and Sam heading to Mordor, and though it's not perfect in every aspect, it can be an amazing experience.

Resident Evil Revelations
Score: 9.0

Look, let’s just cut right to the meat of the Jill sandwich here: Resident Evil Revelations is a game you can sink your teeth into. It layers a delectable amount of graphical polish on top of a beefy, action-packed showpiece for the technology of the 3DS, and tops it all off with just the right amount of aged, B-movie cheese. Toss in a side of unhealthily addictive multiplayer, and you’ve got one heck of a value meal.
