Spike VGA Game of the Year Nominees Announced - News
by Jake Weston , posted on 16 November 2012 / 3,817 ViewsSay what you will about the Spike Video Game Awards, but the annual game awards show is currently the only major game awards show that is televised, and is one of the few mainstream representations of the medium. So it's always newsworthy when they announce their nominees for Game of the Year.
Spike TV revealed their list of Game of the Year nominees, and the candidats may surprise you: Journey, Mass Effect 3, The Walking Dead, Dishonored, and Assassin's Creed III.
Many things stand out to me about the nominees: Two are new IPs, and three are not sequels. Journey is a thematic powerhouse of an art game, and Mass Effect 3, The Walking Dead, and Dishonored celebrate player choice and freedom.
If last year's show is any indication, the awards ceremony still has a long way to go before it isn't cringeworthy to watch. However, judging from the nominees, they have taken a giant step forward in legitimacy and respectability. Like it or not, the Spike VGAs are the closest thing gaming has to the Oscars, and this year they're finally showcasing the best the medium has to offer.
