DICE: Operation Metro a Different Flavor of BF, Not CoD-esque - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 14 October 2011 / 2,948 ViewsBattlefield 3's open beta has come and gone. Some might say that it did more harm than good, and chief among those complaints was the fact that the map DICE showed off was Operation Metro - a map devoid of any vehicles and was considered miniscule compared to standard Battlefield map sizes.
This map choice, with its choke-points and infantry-only affair gave the impression that DICE was going after the Call of Duty fanbase - an idea that did not escape pundits and fans alike.
Speaking to Games.on.net, creative director Lars Gustavsson was asked, " A popular consensus seems to be that Operation Metro plays very much like CoD. "
I mean, with the open beta, you can probably see our train of thought. We showed Operation Metro at E3, then Caspian Border at Gamescom, and now the open beta. We try to get data out of both of them. They are each other’s counterparts. One is infantry-focused, tight combat, and one is that typical all-out war. But going back through our games throughout the years, you’ve had Stalingrad, you’ve had Karkand; many of these levels that have been more infantry-focused. So I wouldn’t call it CoD-esque. I’d call it another flavour of Battlefield
While I liked the BF3 beta, I do get where people are coming from. No vehicles, bullets seem to take down enemies way too easy and the fact that destruction has been toned down, it's easy to see why some Battlefield die-hards are wary of the game launching too closely to Activision's mega-franchise.
Be sure to give the whole interview a read as it's comforting to know that the final build is worlds apart from the beta and that it wasn't a demo, but an actual beta.
Do you think Operation Metro felt a little too much like Call of Duty or is Gustavsson correct in his assessment that this is just another flavor for the BF franchise?

I thought this at first, but once I got a real good feel for the map, and ended up in a squad that worked together that all changed. Me and three guys could usually end up defending the hallway in the metro every time if we worked together. I would drop the mobile spawn about 50 feet back, then switch to medic, tossing out health packs and reviving anyone who was taken down. The support would keep us all ammo'd up, and it would be hell for the enemy to root us out of there.
It was amazing how much the game changed when you went from running around like a solo idiot, to working with a couple of your teamates to take a position.

It doesn't at all. Which is why I'm not buying it.
I liked the beta, I really did but nothing in that beta convinced me it will be better than MW3. In fact it it made me think the opposite.
What was wrong with the beta?
-There was no satisfaction in "winning" a match.
-People say BF requires teamwork? Funny, I got a 14 killstreak with a sniper from mid-range, spawn camping people. No teamwork required.
-Campers. Especially in the outdoor areas near the bushes and stuff.
-Buggy killcam. If you can't do it right, don't do it at all.
-Plus all the glitches like falling though maps, blurry screen upon respawning, screen tearing...etc
To me, Operation Métro felt more like Enemy Territory than COD.
Actually the fact that it is easier to kill is cool with me. All I ever played on bfbc2 was hardcore just because it was much easier to kill enemies.
Not really sure whats wrong with the bottlenecks... in the second area, if your attacking, and can break through one of the three, coming around and flanking the other two sides can just be devastating. It really rewards players playing together, rather than just running up and getting mowed down over and over again.
