Over 100 Developers Allegedly Uncredited in L.A. Noire - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 05 June 2011 / 3,289 Views

Crediting developers, artists, producers, and anyone else involved in the creation of games has always been messy. There remains no consistent process for doing so, and as such it is not uncommon for individuals to be titled incorrectly, grouped with the wrong team, or to be left out of the credits entirely. The latter, more extreme case appears to have effected L.A. Noire, the open world crime-solving game from Rockstar Games and Team Bondi.

Over 100 developers have gone uncredited in Rockstar's latest, according to former employees who spent several years working on the game. A group of those left out have surfaced and put together the website L.A. Noire Credits, where they have put together what they claim to be the "complete" list of those who took part in crafting the recent hit, which sold more than 1.6 million copies in its first week at retail.

These people devoted their talent, creativity and passion towards the project and, as is common in the games industry, have not been credited because they were not there during the final month or two of production, or other subjective criteria," reads a statement on the website. "A significant portion of these people did not leave Team Bondi by choice: they were made redundant as art production wound down, and as Quality Assurance work was shifted off-shore to Rockstar's studios."

Considering Team Bondi's location in Sydney Australia, where the games industry isn't exactly prevalent, this could be considered an even worse injustice. As Gamasutra writes, L.A. Noire was the first title produced by much of talent behind the game.

"This could lead to highly talented, and equally important, experienced developers pursuing their careers abroad or, more tragically, leaving the games industry permanently," the statement reads.

With cases like these popping up more than once where Rockstar is concerned, and becoming increasingly common throughout the industry, one can only wonder when the industry at large will come up with some sort of consistent method for crediting those involved with it.

This wasn't done on purpose, Rockstar has no reason to do so. They just need a system to ensure everyone is credited, because once they have all the names - it seems like it would be easy to have them all credited.

I agree with Non-Gravity. I doubt they'd do it on purpose, but development was all over the place, after all. People always get left out. Though, the number IS high....

With a messy 8 years, development first for PS2 and then for PS3 and Sony dropping the title and Rockstar picking it up, I suppose these things happen
