Lens of Truth Exclusive: Killzone 3 vs. Crysis 2 - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 02 April 2011 / 22,553 ViewsJust when you thought nobody was reading your comments, our friends and new partners over at The Lens of Truth decided to pit the newfound king of console graphics - Crysis 2 - against what is widely regarded as PS3's greatest shooter: Killzone 3.
First off, here's a run-down of the essential data from the clips assembled here. For the layman, FPS is frames per second. Torn frames are when two or more frames are displayed at the same time in some way, usually to negative effect. This test was done using the Xbox 360 version of Crysis 2, which won the FPS battle when it went head-to-head with the PS3 version.

Now you've got all the facts. Which do you think is better?

Killzone 3 looks better no doubt about it. But what really amazes me is that a game from 2009 (UNCHARTED 2) still has the best graphics of all time.
Killzone 3 remains the King... of FPS (becaus the global Graphics king is Uncharted 2... by far).
But nice work by Crytec on a multiplat game.
One of the best multiplatform games in the market.
Crysis 2 was made for 360
Killzone 3 was made for PS3
why would you think Crysis 2 would "look better" or be as smooth.
also, though PS3 is more powerful almost all multiplatform games are made for 360 and ported to PS3, so they are more stable on 360, thus better on 360.
thats why PS3 exclusives look so good compared to multi platform
Aldro lol... did someone really say ps3 is inferior.... people actually dont know that THEORETICALLY the ps3 can perform MORE THAN TWICE THE GRAPHICAL COMPUTATIONS as Xbox 360......It can do 2.1 Teraflops compared to Xbox 360's 0.8.....so actually they arent even CLOSE.....however given the difficulty in using the ps3 power... xbox appears fairly equal.... I had to clear that up... people get it twisted all the time.... and killzone 3 looks better I have them both
Heres an updated link comparing ps3 and xbox on true power.

@Rawnchie14
Inferior? The 360 and PS3 are very equal in terms of producing graphics. The PS3 has some parts better and the 360 has others. All im saying is that I was quite shocked after looking at the video after playing both games myself. I personally feel there's not that huge of a difference, but when you see them side to side... Then there actually is quite a leap. KZ3 imo looks better, but not as much as the video appears to make it seem.
@SxyxS
Excellent point. Which will be completly ignored - Just like it was when I posted it.
Pathetic, isnt it?
@nolgan
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-crysis2-face-off?page=2
You obviously read the DF tech analysis of the game. The game on 360 is the platform choice for crysis 2. Second of all Killzone 3 does not have a larger map than crysis 2. Killzone 3 is very linear as most time you only allowed to proceed to the next are from direction whereas in crysis 2 there are multiple routes to get there and alot of area to explore. Its just seem to show that you haven't played crysis 2 . LOL if you install the game on the 360 hardrive there is no noticeable lag aka below 20fps plus i yet to notice any screen tearing. Read analysis or play games before you make such remark. Its quite obvious that you are a sony fanboy as there is no game that has textures thousand times better than its competitors. Most of killzone involves a dark grey destroyed with a few variety such as the jungle and the ice stage and the ice stage was the only impressive looking stage in killzone 3. Dude play less and learn to write because what you wrote makes no sense whatsoever.
@dr grass,
I only critique a game that i have finished therefore i can't say much about GT5 as it will take me a long time to clock everything in the game. So far 200 premium looks very nice while the 800 is just an upscaled ps2 cars and some tracks could have used a bit more time to look nice. Otherwise so far gt5 is like any other GT game to me. Well when i was playing crysis2 from my 360 hard drive and i din't notice any screen tearing or noticeable frame rate drops . Everyone is entitled to their own opinion about a game given that they provide reasoning to their critique
killzone3 is this
http://www.psicocine.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/battle_los_angeles_world_invasion_poster1.jpg
accion, action, the best, this movie is very good = kz3
crysis2 is mmmm... a game less lofty
god!
no comparison ...
crysis2 not so much on stage as kz3, has many enemies and friends on the screen while collapsing all things in the air ships, bombs, a thousand effects the most ... ALL at the same time
no color, I like to see the engine kz3 in a gtx580 pc with 2 gb of ram, would leave pc crysis2 in a crappy game
consoles, the best version is the play3
in x360
-
lows of less than 20 frames on many occasions, leaving injgable, crenate solve it much motion blur in the image
-
Textures worst
-
the textures and polygon lejado fades and looks bad to remove power to the x360 and the frames do not fall below 10
-
worst effects of light
in x360 is a bit more resolution, x360 play3 1102 vs 1024, nothing else
is the only thing better on x360 to play3
kz3 has
- larger maps
- more open maps
- more enemies on screen
- more friends on screen
- more vehicles both friends and enemies on screen
- a thousand times better textures
- best effects, destruction, shaders, lighting
-
stage with more polygons, only to see the stage filled with ice, walls, ruins, snow, smoke, full stage, not as crysis2 is often an empty street with few cars, or a minimum object filled room, when kz3 are full of things
etc etc
@ Aldro
Rapes? Don't know what video you saw but they seem to be pretty close to me. This is pretty impressive for the 360, since it's "supposed" to be the vastly inferior console.
I do not see any inferiority there.
I think it"s not fair to compare a 1st Party Game with the focus on only one version with a 3rd Party Multiplattformtitel.
Also Crysis2 is the 1st console Title ever made by crytech while KZ3 is the 2nd Title next Gen title made by guerilla games.
@dane007
"lol @ all sony fan boys. Its obvious that lens of truth are lying as DF have said the 360 version of crysis 2 is v-synch therefore it has no screen tearing."
WRONG.
"The only reason why is looks that good during a titan fight because during the scene its usually just kratos and the titan"
The scenes with the titans are widely hailed as the most technically impressive in the industry. No other dev has been brave enough to do anything like that yet.
"For heavy rain , the only thing that looks good are the main characters faces and the rain effects. The rest are pretty much average"
You really are on a role here. Maybe you should get into GT5 too. There's a lot to badmouth there.
When reviewing these and comparing them graphically, it is a difficult task, personally I have an epic gaming rig (PC), and both consoles, I do not prescribe or have any bias views over what platform presents the better range or quality of games, with this in mind -
Killzone 3 is an amazing title with some stunning visuals set by the pace of the game, however this detracts you from the casual wondering or exploring giving you the real opportunity to examine the eye candy, for this reason it would appear the true visual candy is what is directly in front of you at any one point and that is delivered incredibly well, visually.
The cut scenes are visually brilliant with a dark cold war feel, however the story is not brilliant which disappoints despite the scenes being gorgeous.
Crysis 2 is a much slower paced title which gives you the opportunity to take in the visuals and when comparing visuals between the 2 consoles short of a microscope its really hard to tell the difference, Crysis 2 has stunning visuals all round, the cut scenes are disappointing purely as no extra effort seems to have been put in to make them stand out from the normal game visuals, but the story does go a long and negates this factor.
Personally Crysis 2 is the overall winner purely because you do get to appreciate all the eye candy, it has a fair story to make the cut scenes a crucial part of the game.
In stating that however, I do believe if Killzone 3 was set at the same pace thus giving the player more opportunity to take in the eye candy, Sony probably could have polished it up and I might very well have had a different opinion.
Bottom Line - Crysis 2 gets a double thumbs up with this head to head!
Based on that video, KZ3 rapes C2 tbh.
@Joel12345
Yes i am serious. For me Crysis 2 is graphical superior than killzone 3 . Its only better by a small margin though. Like i said, both are beautiful looking game but i find crysis 2 is better looking. Plus there is no frame tearing like lens of truth mentions and fps improves significantly when installed on the hard drive. Its my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own right?
Honestly, both looked fantastic, but these are two different games with different pacing and visual style, so an apples to apples graphics comparison really isnt possible, is it?
That said, these clips lead me to two conclusions:
1) KZ3 shooter segments definitely felt more frenetic and chaotic (in a good way) than C2. And the ambient audio effects and squad chatter in KZ3 seemed far better than C2 (but maybe it was just louder? ;-))
2) As a PS3 owner I'm quite please to be able to play BOTH of these great games on my console.
@dane007 Are you...serious?GAL
it seems like crysis 2 is more realistic while kz3 looks more cartoonish/cgi in terms of presentation and graphics. but that's just my opinion!!!
Lol@ those who said that god of war 3 is the best looking game . I have also clocked the game and most of the stages looked and the only time where is god like graphics is when you fight the titans. The only reason why is looks that good during a titan fight because during the scene its usually just kratos and the titan , therefore the console has to render two objects. Obviously do that it will look really . Any console that just needs to render two objects will look god like.
For heavy rain , the only thing that looks good are the main characters faces and the rain effects. The rest are pretty much average. Unchartered may best for the ps3 exclusive but its not the best looking the game this generation. If you play it now , the game still looks good but it shows it age and you can see alot of low res texture as well. Unchartered series is the only game that i really like from the ps3 exclusive library.
lol @ all sony fan boys. Its obvious that lens of truth are lying as DF have said the 360 version of crysis 2 is v-synch therefore it has no screen tearing. Second of all if you install the game onto the hard drive and play it from it , there is no visible lag as i pretty finished the game with no slowdown at all. I only noticed tiny amount of pop ups . I have also played and finished killzone3 and to be honest most of killzone 3 looks dull and boring as the only staged whereas i was stunned was the ice stage. Everything was quite bland and way to many low res textures. I have also experienced a tiny amount of lag in killzone 3. The character models in killzone 3 may be better than crysis 2 but the environment , explosions , lighting are all better in crysis 2 . I played on veteran and the Ai in both games are equal in my opinion. Also skin textures for main characters especially the helghan people look far from realistic. That is definitely not human like skin texture lol. Plus killzone 3 story was boring has it tried to tell a story from it predecessor that had no story what so ever. Don't get me wrong , both games are entertaining to play and both visually stunning but to me crysis2 is better game overall.
My 2 cents.
About me:
I've never played either of these nor KZ2 nor Crisis 1. I'm not really a First Person Shooter gamer. I only own an nice PC rig and a PS3. The annual subscription fee has kept from the 360 up to now. I don't buy games on release date. I buy them when I can purchase them for $30 dollars or less.
From what I've seen:
- The one that grabbed my attention the most was KZ3. The first clip looked sharp and the detail on the faces of the old men debating with each other was entertaining. Felt like I was watching a flick.
- They both look very Call of duty to me. (All shooters look the same to me because I don't play them very much) The environments shown for KZ3 look lighter and livelier, but I know C2 has some too. Besides I'm watching them on 720p youtube video. They probably look nicer and sharper on a HDTV.
- The pace of each of these games looks different. KZ3 looks like it is pushing you to advance quickly, as if to imply unto you a sense of hurry. C2 gives off a different vibe; a slower cautious pace for the player to follow.
Basically, from what I saw KZ3 got more of my attention. I've wanted to buy KZ2 a while a go but it never dropped to a price I would pay for it. I will continue to wait until all three of these games drop below $20 dollars. Sorry I'm just bias that way. All shooters are nice eye candy, but always end up being stored in the end because I don't play Multi-player.
So now were talking story in a graphics comparison topic?
MS has sony beat in that department? LOL the likes of Uncharted and heavy rain begs to differ.
Again... just comparing these screens and video Killzone 3 looks better.
And Uncharted 2 and God of War 3 are better than both.
@GuiltySpartan: This is the problem it doesn't really rival - and to make the comparison they had to use the best version they think there is - and KZ3 have the best graphic and for me even that doesn't matter... but when people are discussing which have the best graphic it matters, so if you don't think it's important you could just be another place and don't comment on what you don't care.
This is an article to those that because Crysis 2 version in Xbox 360 is slighty best and Crytek said they made the most advanced graphics on game on console to date some fanboys assumed that it would be really better than KZ3, but guess what?? It isn't.
What the matter I like Killzone 3 more than Crysis 2 .
Killzone3 is one of the best fps games.
@Apollian
I will agree that KZ hasn't got a great story, but to say that Gears of War does... not for me. I never finished the first Halo, but Gears I did, and the characters and story are B-grade junk.
Crysis' gameplay is not miles ahead of anything. It's going for it's own thing. Suit powered soldier (which is hardly original is it) and quite frankly I find it boring and a bit silly. I like KZ gamplay far better (except for part 1 which was a dreadful game).
Graphics... they are doing pretty similar things. Hard to call. Somethings better than others on both sides. One thing I think everyone can agree on is that Crysis 2 < Crysis 1 graphically
Congratulations KZ3 & GG!
Ok you proved a point by making this article or do you just feel the need to comment to defend killzone 3? Like the guy below me said they are basically equal and nitpicking torn rate is just stupid since when does that even matter. All i know is i'd rather play ratchet and clank all day long than play Killzone, sorry if you disagree i understand but you don't have to try and put down Crysis 2 just because it rivals PS3's best looking game.
the truth is, I found Killzone 2 boring due to the same enemy's popping up and lack of variation.
Killzone 3 shows once again that Sony can make a game with great graphics, and stil lack the gameplay substance of a powerful Story driven first person shooter... thats where Microsoft's Gears of War and Halo has Sony beaten... the stories and characters are much more realistic on the Xbox shooters, backed up by IGN's 2nd opinion review online as we speak... I played Halo Reach and Crysis and both are miles ahead of Killzone. not in Graphics, but gameplay which is the most important thing......Graphics aren't important these days because all games now look great, so pickin at little things like tearing makes very little difference.
Well there's one area where Crysis 2 will top KZ3... SALES! MWUAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Congratulation Killzone 3 for be the best grafics on first person shoters!!!
I'll give the cutscene part of the video to KZ3. Too hard to tell with the in game. So close and with quite different artistic approaches I think you have to make performance the deciding factor. So with KZ3 being solid 30FPS, no screen tearing and native 720p I'll have to give the overall prize to KZ3 on technical grounds.
the breakdown beats the screenshot by screenshot comparison I normally see.
For me KZ3 will be played, won't bother with the Crysis2 and that was before any comparison.
KZ3 is more visually appealing
but gameplay is something i can''t judge cause i didn't play crysis 2
but all i know was that KZ3 was awesome
Ya know 360 fans will say Crysis 2 and PS3 fans will say KZ3. So why fucking bother. I know both games look great and both games do things better than the other so I'm just gonna get some popcorn and watch these sensitive mofos go back and forth like a game of dam tennis.
LOL watch the video, KZ3 killed C2 performance and graphics.
KZ3 = 720p native, no screen tearing, constant 30fps and look @ the lighting in kaznan jungle level.
@Bl00dSaint
You come across as one of those people that you criticise.
You can think that mario kart wii looks better than K3 but you have bought nothing to the discussion.
Just a stupid "It is so because I said so" that's typical of the ignorant.
@raygun
I pretty much agree with what you said BUT can't agree with the best engines being JC2 or RD but the AI is indeed superior in RD...IMO.
Crysis 2 looks better in screenshots, but Killzone has almost flawless performance, unlike Crysis 2.
Nothing new in what I just said though.
KZ3 by a landslide.
@Bl00Saint, your fanboyism and stupidity are incredible, you definitely under represent what real gamers are and people who want to have a real discussion.
"creaming on the pie."
Wow, you might want to find a more...appropriate...expression for that.
@curl-6 Still, if we see it everyday we can photograph it, upload the images to a computer, grab the exact colors right off the photo. Even photograph textures, sides of buildings, tree leaves, signs, cars, asphalt, EVERYTHING. Sample the ambient and direct lighting at the same time. Your just copying textures and lighting and applying them to your game maps. For me the best so far in Crysis2 was the times square map, great lighting effects, but I think that could be done in any current game engine. The trees sway naturally, but all the same, the movement is canned. For me personally the best game engines out there so far are neither killzone3 or Crysis2 anyway, it has been Justcause2 and Red Dead! Just Cause2 had better AI than Crysis2, but not as good as Red Dead, and they both have incredibly beautiful sandbox engines. If only they were 3d!
Lens of Fail fails again
Digital Foundry confirmed Crysis 2 on xbox 360 is v-synch locked, no tearing
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-crysis2-face-off?page=2
"Crysis 2 operates with v-sync on both platforms "
why does lens of fail have to lie?
@ nsanity ha-ha hahahahaha you know that's alpha code gameplay shown from the original trailer at E3 2010 lolz
try this instead: http://s3.amazonaws.com/readers/2010/07/27/gsye310kz3part21_1.gif

All this talk of cutscenes in KZ3 not being in game is crazy. They are all done in engine. When playing the game it looks the same as well.
Bloodsaint, you shouldnt talk about fanboy when you make comment like this. Im sure you dont even have a PS3 let alone played Uncharted 2 or Killzone 3.
Michael-5, theres a couple of games that runs at 1080P, like GT5 and wipeout. Not that it really matter anyway.
@raygun: Sampling it is one thing, reproducing it in all its ridiculously intricate detail is another. We all see reality every day, so its easy to fault it for the tiniest inconsistency; when we see something stylised we're more forgiving.
In terms of technicals and graphics an easy win for Killzone 3, the steadier performance is just creaming on the pie.
The thing I noticed most going from K3 to C2 was that the weapons in Crysis 2 feel less realistic and lacking 'punch'.
It really doesn't matter. Also, it's more then just FPS and tear rate. It's more dependen on resolution, draw distance, anti-aliasing, fade in, polygon count, light effects and then the developers attention to detail.
Now that I found out that none of these two, nor any exclusive 360/PS3 game run in 1080p, I really don't care.
They all look the same to me, and in reality when Gears 3 and Uncharted 3 come out they will top this and we will see another debate.
"It's easy to stylise and build an artificial look; you set your own standards of what the graphics should be, making it easier to achieve these standards.
It's much harder to make your engine imitate real life, which has it's own (extremely high standards) which are very difficult to live up to."
OR, you may have that backwards, it's easier to copy real world graphics. You can look at photos, go outside and sample light, have access to lighting data that's been available for 3d graphics work for years. And the maps ARE big in killzone3.
From what i've read, Killzone3's cutscenes were done with in game assets to preserve continutity, recorded played back with bink video.
Obviously Crysis 2 looks better
They have better Frames per sec and look much more realistic and less cartoony than KZ3
Too bad there are too many Sony Fanboys on this site =
@Rafux
Crysis can't beat UnCharted 2?!? Are you kidding me?!? Crysis will rdestroy Uncharted 2 hands down.
I think it blindingly obvious that Killzone 3 is the winner, especially given that Killzone 3 runs at a higher resolution and has more happening on the screen, and keeps a higher framerate without any screen tearing. Good Job GG!
It's easy to stylise and build an artificial look; you set your own standards of what the graphics should be, making it easier to achieve these standards.
It's much harder to make your engine imitate real life, which has it's own (extremely high standards) which are very difficult to live up to.
Killzone 3 is better, Crysis 2 can't even beat Uncharted 2.
KZ3 hands down. Crysis looks characters look like a cartoon. KZ2 is better than Crysis 2 as well. The thing about Crysis it seems is the stigma attached to it. Everyone thinks that since it's crysis it is the best. In this case it clearly is not. While Crysis does look fairly good and is the best 360 game to date, it doesn't even come close to what KZ3 and Uncharted series has accomplished. Could they do it on the PS3? Probably. Will they devote the effort? I doubt it.
Well this is the 6th Ive seen. And the kindest to Killzone 3. In that I mean they chose a linear part of Crysis 2 to show side by side. Instead of making it blindingly obvious like some comparisons have done and shown Crysis 2 when it's legs are fully stretched. Also those cutscenes were entirely different. Crysis 2 was ingame. KZ3 wasnt. And yes from these results I expect that. Considering Crysis 2 is technically doing so much more.
Yet even here Crysis 2 looks more real.
KILLZONE 3 wins :)
Crysis 2 looks better to me because of its more coherent art style. Killzone 3 looks like it can't decide if it wants to look real or stylised, and gets stuck in a wierd no-man's land in between. C2 on the other hand aimed for realism and achieved it.
Well, since we're on a sales site, let's compare sales to see which one is best. :-P
On 1 console, KZ3 sold 587K in one week. On 2 consoles, Crysis 2 has sold less than 8K more than that. In the end, I wouldn't be surprised if KZ3 went on to outsell it. Looks like Homefront may have a good chance to outsell it, too.
This article is an excellent example of the rock bottom that gaming industry has reached.
Last internet argument of the day so enjoy

@raygun I noticed Ai can be buggy at times.
@goforgoldmight Might Explain why such low resolution was chosen for Killzone explosions
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_ZReVeyMqlsA/TCWnd1c6JnI/AAAAAAAAAzk/l-uwuJNwGjo/s1600/2epnac5.jpg
you also seem to be forgetting about Crysis real time global illumination and large levels along with real time cutscenes which are not present in Killzone 3
How about comparing AI? Crysis2 is a joke, literally. It provides comic relief. Still i'm enjoying the game, but all things considered the Killzone3 engine is tops.
@ Nsanity: you do know resolution and performance are the MAIN things that matter right, that any developer can do anything with low resolution and shit performance LMAO
now I hope this settles the debate, Crysis 2 looks good sure, and on 360 it could be considered the best, but up against the top on ps3, it's lacking, maybe Crysis 3.
Our friends and new partners over at The Lens of Truth? Digitalfoundry must have turned down Vgchartz friend request.
Performance wise and resolution Killzone wins but everything else Crysis 2.
Gamespot doesn't say anything about screen tearing from what I read of their review, at least not for the single player.
@dsage01 Conspiracy right?
KZ3 wins overall imo.
Lets see:
GG's second PS3 game Vs. Cryteks first PS3 game.
Developers learn how to squeeze more out of a console through the process of creating a game. Even more durring the creation of a second.
Killzone PS3 exclusive Vs. Crysis 3 platform game.
Use all your time to focus your resources on a single piece of hardware means you can use all the advantages of the platform and not have to worry about how certain tweaks will effect the other builds.
I'm not to say which is best. I'm simply going to say that I am much more impressed with what Crytek was able to achieve on their first attempt at a PS3 game.
Gamespot is crazy for saying KZ3 has torn frames! Fuck you gamespot stupid ass xbox lover
