PlayStation Move Install Base Hits 4 Million PS3s Worldwide - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 01 March 2011 / 8,314 Views

VGChartz is proud to report that according to internal sales estimates as of February 26th 2011, there are now over four million PS Move compatible PS3s out there - an attach rate of around 8% in just under 6 months on the market. In terms of actual numbers of Move controllers sold, VGChartz estimates over 6.5 million with controller shipments now likely to be in the 7-8 million range.

Moving to software, the heavily-bundled Sports Champions remains the best-seller with nearly a 58% attach rate so far. New releases such as Killzone 3 and older releases with Move-compatibility such as Resident Evil 5, MAG and Heavy Rain have all helped to drive Move pickup to date.

They have the clear advantage of older games being patch-able for use with Move. nintendo has an aatachment rate of over 30% with the MotionPlus, but how many games do you see using that?

@Rawnchie14, you're right. Some people seem to be deevolving towards bacteria and have long passed the chimp spectrum, according to Darwin.

Without investing like 500 milions, Sony can make money out of this 4 millions

i hate that they just come up with a random number for the install base. i know this has been talked about countless times but it just stupid, nobody can know how many users have it. just go by the sold number like everything else. but it stink that great products like this dont sell twice as much

I guess those figures are impressive. Seems like all hype of Move has died out though. I still see Kinect advertisements in my wal marts and clear stores, but not a single Move anything.

Anyone that has Move MUST get themselves a second Move controller and The Fight Lights Out. Ignore the so called 'professional' reviews and pay attention to user feedback and user reviews instead. It's the most entertaining game I've played on the PS3 so far, but be warned: unless you spar regularly in real life you're going to be crippled for a day or two after your first go and it's as addictive as crack cocaine!!!

Yea, pretty sure Sony is more than happy with these numbers...despite it being much less than Kinect...I'd like to know what there estimates were for the first year.

thismeintiel (on 01 March 2011)

Like how some people try to rewrite history. NO ONE THOUGHT MOVE WOULD OUTSELL KINECT! Well, at least not initially. And definitely not this early. Some, like myself, think that Kinect may die off in a few months to a year, while the Move may outleg it in the end. But again, no one thought the Move was going to sell bucketloads in the beginning, not even Sony. So having shipped/sold 7-8 million Moves in ~ 5 months is pretty impressive. Of course, Sony hasn't given out any official numbers recently, so this may be undertracked.

As usual an article is turned into a mud slinging fest, some fans are no worse than monkeys that I see in the zoo, flinging feces at each other.

This is awesome. Move is probably the thing keeping the PS3 up with the 360 in worldwide totals.

Sorry but Move is so much better then Kinect, I own both , Kinect is on for the dancing and singing games which i cant stand, for shooters and other games move has it by a land slide, Mag and Killzone 3 are unreal withg the move, and with games like RES 3 , U3, Socom , Twisted Medal, and many others comming that will be move compadable, it wont take long for move to outsale Kinect. Move offers a MUCH BETTER GAMING EXPERIENCE . for hardcore gamers

Considering it is up against the beast called Kinect that's not bad. I had my doubts about move and was pretty sure it wouldn't sell as much as 8m in it's lifetime.

  • 0
NotStan (on 01 March 2011)

v. 4.6m shipped figure included the eyetoy, move controllers separately, so if everyone brought one piece of the set up each, never mind the actual set up needed to play Move then yeah you're right.

  • 0
FF_Fanatic (on 01 March 2011)

lol ok vgc weird thing is 4m moves was shipped ages ago, the real figure will be around 6m sold by now

Please stop with the "no one thought Kinect would sell" garbage. Everyone knew full well it would sell, we all knew about the marketing campaign. These sales are fine, almost 10% of owners have it? Sounds good to me.

1/2 of Kinect penetration, not that bad for a Wiimote-like. I bet before release that Kinect would sell 4x Move...

''Not really. Everyone was predicting Move sales would be much larger then Kinect. I predicted Kinect would sell more, so I am quite well allowed to comment on this article. I own Sony systems so you can't call me a troll. Nice try with the flamebait though.'' ARE YOU SERIOUS!? Pat yourself on the back for having the genius to predict that the Kinect would be huge. NO-ONE saw it coming. 0o

  • 0
MessiaH (on 01 March 2011)

c'mon guys. no one in their right mind coulda thought move would sell higher. when i first heard about it under the name of "project natal", and read the reaction of xbox fans in forums, i thought it would fail. but when i saw how microsoft aimed it towards a casual audience that doesn't know any better, and spent $500m on advertising, put it on oprah, jimmy fallon, and what not, it was obviously going to outsell the move. also think about it, if a casual person sees a move and a kinect, theyre not gonna think like core gamers "where are the buttons? this is limited!" theyre gonna think "COOL! NO BUTTONS!!!! this looks VERY intuitive and fun!!!". Not just that, the fact that it is 1 piece of harware as opposed to the several pieces you have to get for move. this all adds up as a plus to the casual gamer. thats why you have about 10mil unique x360s with kinect and only 4mil ps3s with move (dunno exact kinect numbers). so yeah, makes total sense. now, everyone hug each other. make love, not war.

LivingMetal (on 01 March 2011)

MonstaMack. No, what you first said is fact, but this is a thread about PS3/Move. If this were an article in regards to Xbox 360 sales increasing 1000% in Japan, then great, but it will still be selling less thah the PS3. And I would see no need for someone to point that out since it would be an Xbox 360 article. Mentioning the PS3 in such a fashion can be seen as trolling/flamebait. Sorry my logic and neutralness in this case is ignored. So I'd tell you to ignore me, but you already have. Your loss. ;-)

How pathetic. Perhaps if Sony produced something even remotely different from Wii's Motion Control it would've sold better.

LivingMetal (on 01 March 2011)

MonstaMack, a person can be a troll regard of platform ownership. Everyone to some degree is bias regardless of the consoles they own. Truth.

"veryone was predicting Move sales would be much larger then Kinect." Everyone was not. This is a specific SONY/Move article. It's that simple to prevent flamebait from trolls, but some people....

@ MonstaMack. Kinect primary target - casuals - bigger userbase. Move primary target - hardcore - smaller userbase. VGChartz's numbers - estimates. You comments - uncalled for, trolling.

Sales low compared to Kinect.

  • 0
enrageorange (on 01 March 2011)

iveyboi. There actually were quite a few people expecting the move to outsell kinect. I'm sure if you look hard enough you will find a poll asking which will sell better and move had twice as many votes. Good sales for move none the less. Move was definitely a big financial success for sony and thats all that matters.

  • 0
Iveyboi (on 01 March 2011)

I expect a flood of "lolz Kinect iz betta" but I don't think anyone out there expected Move to outsell Kinect. 4 million is a good number so far, expect next holiday to be much better now that awareness is out. I got the sports champions bundle with the extra controller, navigation controller and now the sharpshooter and I am very happy with them.

  • 0
Rafux (on 01 March 2011)

Good numbers since Sony also sells navigators and chargers which are not essential but very usefull

Do you expect significantly higher numbers with the killzone launch?

  • 0
Lazthelost (on 01 March 2011)

Considering they said they shipped 4.1 million move controllers back in November I'd say it's about time they hit "4 million PS Move compatible PS3's out there" whatever that exactly means. Good for Sony though.

  • 0
Euphoria14 (on 01 March 2011)

So Move sales have picked up since KZ3 launch? Great news for the Move. Still wish SONY would give us some numbers so we know exactly where it truly stands.

Pretty good for the Move controller. Kinda curious as to how well the Nav controller is doing, since it's completely by itself.
