Modern Warfare 2 hits 10 million units sold - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 22 November 2009 / 13,440 Views

VGChartz reported last week that around 8.6 million units of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 were sold in the first week (five days of sales) after selling around 6.4 million units on the first day. As many should have predicted from this ratio of day one to week one sales, week two saw an enormous dropoff of around 80%. This puts week two sales at around 1.7 million units - more than many games sell in their first week - and takes total sales to date over 10 million units in just twelve days of release.

With five weeks of the year left, VGChartz estimates that total sales for 2009 should hit around 14.5 million units by December 31st and should position Modern Warfare 2 as the number 1 seller on PS3 and number 2 on Xbox 360 (behind Halo 3) - with just 7 weeks of sales.

Keep checking VGChartz for the latest Modern Warfare 2 sales updates in the coming weeks.

You're going to see a massive drop off each and every week for MW2.

It still didn't manage to outsell MW1...

Ostro (on 23 November 2009)

hm well, 3 systems.
most people who wanted this now own it. 10m for one system would be impressive (lifetime) imo.

@FonzGemini

Maybe if a game like NSMB Wii is selling so well it's because the game is aiming ALL of us not just kids, like you seem to pretend.

MW2 may not be the great game we were all waiting for (unfortunately), but still managed to have some amazing sales.

Activision / IW will make hundreds of millions in profits from this game. In fact pretty much no matter what they do from here on out they will end this generation in the black, even if no other game they make turns a profit.

It is a great pity that some other really deserving game franchises don't receive the same kind of love.

thats' a game for the column "look at those legs" ^^ I think it will be rated "short legs"

Kai Master (on 23 November 2009)

Last time I heard of CoD4 sales they were at 14M including PC sales, no news about its sales now? I also read that it past 17M players a few months ago on 360+PS3 (not including PC)...
I'm also wondering how much GTA:SA sold including PC sales, I've seen up to 25M on some sites and I remember a T2 PR in this order.
So by 31st december 2009 MW2 will be the best selling FPS of all time, or just short of MW1? Are you counting steam-like sales for PC version?

Really quite a shame that MW2 MULTIPLAYER ON THE PC ABSOLUTELY SUCKS.

  • 0
MonstaMack (on 23 November 2009)

Crazy sales regardless. Makes me wonder how World at War could have done it if were in a Modern Warfare setting with insane hype. I just wish I could pick World at War on the cheap now but with the COD name it will probably be quite some time before I can snag a copy cheap.

it's already out sold most of the platinum and greatest hits collections... yet this won't be neither for 1-2 years. lame

this dont count PC sales smaller i know but still big for this game

A big opening rush and a disappointing sales climax huh? Maybe we should send IW some COD Viagra ;)

FonzGemini (on 22 November 2009)

Kid friendly games do tend to sell a whole lot better than hardcore games. Just look at games like Nintendogs, Mario Kart on Wii and DS, and New Super Mario on DS... NSMBWii will likely follow that trend.

atma998 (on 22 November 2009)

@Silver-Tiger

Nintendo says NSMB Wii should reach the 10 million mark by March 2010. CoD:MW2 will have good legs but nothing comparable to what NSMB Wii will have. Plus a new CoD game will probably be out sometime around Christmas 2010.

pretty impressive that on the ps3, which has many excellent exclusives, that a multiplatform would be its best seller, and within 7 weeks.

TheThunder (on 22 November 2009)

No Reggie agreed that NSMB will outsell the 360 MW2 (Keighley repeated the 360 twice) by the end of Jan 2010 which it won't.

BIG DROP after BIIIIIIG SALES!

silicon (on 22 November 2009)

Didn't Reggie say it would beat MW2 on a single console?

So it can beat PS3 MW2 sales by the end of the year. I think it already beat PC sales.

  • 0
sonicshuffle (on 22 November 2009)

Wow. Next week it will surpass the sales of Halo 3 just like that. Amazing.

  • 0
Silver-Tiger (on 22 November 2009)

@atma998:

And You think MW2 don't have legs? MW2 will continue to sell, of course not at this high level, but will sell. Heck even if NSMB continues to outsell MW2 from now on, it still has a HUGE way to go to 10 million, and that asuming MW2 completely stops selling.

  • 0
atma998 (on 22 November 2009)

This huge drop was predictable for a front loaded game such as CoD:MW2.

@kingofwale

The reason we have to wait in that case is because a game like NSMB Wii is a ''leg'' game and won't have most of its LTD sales on week 1. NSMB Wii outselling both versions of CoD:MW2 is just a matter of time.

  • 0
Edouble24 (on 22 November 2009)

Huge drop, but every week from this point on is part of the holiday season, so it should hold up well and increase a bit.

  • 0
Carl (on 22 November 2009)

@ioi,
you gonna reveal the split... Or dont we know that yet? :-(

  • 0
kingofwale (on 22 November 2009)

@Superchunk.

then back it up, let's go with a voluntary 1 week self-controlled ban from this website on the outcome of this.

are you in? or just merely pulling-a-Reggie? ;)

  • 0
superchunk (on 22 November 2009)

@kingofwale

Reggie will be right. By end of January NSMBWii will have outsold the 360 version of MW2.

  • 0
Barozi (on 22 November 2009)

80% drop was totally expected.

Halo 3 anyone ?

  • 0
AnthonyW86 (on 22 November 2009)

And some people were doubting claims(Pachter) that this would sell 10 million by the end of the year...

  • 0
kingofwale (on 22 November 2009)

@the_bloodwalker

again, there are some predictions that are just too far off, you don't need to wait until the last second to tell the result... Much like people prediction PSP will not catch up with DS this gen, do we need to wait until the end of the Gen to 'wait and see'?

of course not. Reggie ran his mouth a little too much, it's time to admit the mistake

  • 0
oldschoolfool (on 22 November 2009)

Well derserved in my opinion!!!!!!

  • 0
sabby_e17 (on 22 November 2009)

MW2 will easily outsell Halo 3. I'm expecting 12.5-13 million on the 360 alone and about 6.5-7 million on the PS3.

  • 0
CatFangs806 (on 22 November 2009)

I actually think the 360 version has a very good chance at outselling Halo 3. I mean, the game sold half of halo 3's lifetime sales in one week. COD truly is the Halo killer. Bye Bye, Master Chief. Your opponent in the FPS wars is finally catching up to you.

  • 0
the_bloodwalker (on 22 November 2009)

We have to wait till January NPD so we will know if will eat crow or gold in the middle of February

  • 0

I m pretty sure they must already be working on Modern Warfare 3. It might become the best selling game on both HD console before the next E3

  • 0

  • 0

That's a 50% drop even if you don't count the first day.
