PS5 vs PS4 Sales Comparison - February 2026 - Sales
by William D'Angelo , posted on 06 April 2026 / 14,863 ViewsThe VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.
This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4.
The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 launched in November 2013. This does mean the holiday periods for the two consoles do lineup.

PS5 Vs. PS4 Worldwide:
Gap change in latest month: 138,243 - PS4
Gap change over last 12 months: 497,908 - PS4
Total Lead: 2,726,979 - PS4
PlayStation 5 Total Sales: 91,040,548
PlayStation 4 Total Sales: 93,767,527
February 2026 is the 64th month the PlayStation 5 has been available for. In the latest month, the gap grew in favor of the PlayStation 4 when compared to the aligned launch of the PlayStation 5 by 0.14 million units.
In the last 12 months, the PS4 has outsold the PS5 by 0.50 million units. The PS4 is currently ahead of the PS5 by 2.73 million units.
The PS5 has sold 91.04 million units in 64 months, while the PS4 sold 93.77 million units. Month 63 for the PS5 is February 2026 and for the PS4 is February 2019.
The PS4 crossed 95 million in month 66, 100 million in month 72, and 105 million in month 74. The PS4 sold 117.20 million units lifetime. The PS5 is 26.16 million units behind lifetime PS4 sales.

Switch 2 has this in the bag.
PS5 has this in the bag.
Definitely not “in the bag” but I don’t think it is impossible for PS5 to win in the end. Again, it really does depend on two very unpredictable variables: (i) How big GTAVI will boost sales figures, (ii) When will Sony reveal/release PS6.
Before we know the answer to these two questions, PS5 is the underdog with its incoming price hike in addition to being nearly 3 million behind PS4.
If the gap increases over 3M again, PS5 is in trouble.
Now it gets interesting, one month ago I would have said the PS5 wins because the PS4's production basically stopped during COVID, giving the PS5 the edge with a longer tail.
However now with the substantial price hike, this could slow the PS5 sales so much that the longer tail simply won't be enough anymore to make up the difference to the PS4.
In other words, this still can go either way, and only the next couple months gonna give us a clearer picture on the PS5 sales after the hike.
When you consider the ps6 handheld will be weaker than a base ps5 ( that's what the ps5 power saving mode is, a compatibility layer for a future handheld), you realise that all future Playstations will not replace the PS5, but they will just be an extension of the ps5 ecosystem. So, when you realise that this comparison is pointless and the PS5/PS6 handheld + other iterations combined together will blow the PS4 out of the water in sales
Copium
"Copium". PS5 took out it's main competitor in Xbox, helped Sony post record profits, has a marketing deal with GTA6 but my comment was about coping because Playstation 5 is lagging behind PS4. Why even go there with that comment? So immature
Took out xbox, yet are seeing no growth in console sales. Record breaking profits yet they have shutdown 8 studios since 2020 and had thousands of lay offs, cancelled half a dozen games, increased the price of consoles, games, accessories and subscriptions.
But yeah everything is completely fine
Everything is completely fine though, that's what makes this all so weird.
I'm just seeing the image of the dog in the burning house saying this is fine.
Sony has a total monopoly on the market and you keep commenting like they don't. What's the point of this? Accept it and move on. No point making silly comments under my posts
Almost 3 million behind the ps4 even with xbox imploding is not fine. Even matching the ps4 is not fine. The market is shrinking and that is not fine for anyone.
Just because there is a hardware decline doesn't mean the Playstation business is in decline. It's the business overall that counts. Just look at Xbox's last quarterly report, it was disastrous in comparison to Playstations.
They can't keep shutting down studios, laying off people and increasing prices forever to have the illusion of growth. Shareholders demand constant growth if the amount of people buying playstation consoles decreases the only way to increase growth is to get more and more money from the people that are buying playstations.
GTA6 coming and Wolverine coming. A new handheld is also coming. Playstation future and growth looks fine to me but if you want to believe it's future looks bad then it's you're free to believe what you want to.
Microsoft has given up on this generation in 2024, but this doesn't mean they can't make a comeback next gen. Just look at Nintendo and how they came back both after the GameCube and the Wii U.
On a shrunken market this would result into smaller sales for Sony in the console market.
As for the handheld, considering how the Vita fared, I'll wait until I see how it will fare against the competition, both from Nintendo and from handheld PCs.
MS has ported all of it's games over to Playstation so why would anyone buy a Helix over the next Playstation? No comeback is possible they are too far gone.
PS6P and PS vita are not comparable. It's designed to run all PS4 and PS5 games so it won't need dedicated development of games for it like the VITA did. It's like the PS portal where, unless it literally sells no units, it can't be a failure because it's just an extension of the PS ecosystem and not a new platform
I agree with all your overall takes here, but I don´t think it´s fair to arbitrarily tack on PS6P to PS5 console sales just because it will be backwards compatible. I do think if RAM and chip prices drop by time of PS6 due to new fab capacity, it is very possible for PS5 itself to have relatively long tail.
It's not backwards compatibility though. When PS6P releases, all games designed by PS studios will be instructed to first design the games to run on the portable and then scale them up for other PS devices. We know that PS6P will be the weakest of all devices next gen because we know that the power saving mode in PS5 is just a compatibility layer for future hardware.
How can we say something is backwards compatible when the platform that launches after PS5 is weaker than PS5 and PS5 will continue to get all the games designed for PS6P?
