Wii is 9 Times More Reliable Than Xbox 360, 4 Times More Than PS3 - News
by VGChartz Staff , posted on 02 September 2009 / 4,676 ViewsSquareTrade, the largest independent warranty provider in the world, recently have done some research on comparing malfunction rates for Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.
What has been unsurprisingly found, is that the Wii is the most reliable of the 3 consoles, followed by PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 respectively. The Wii has a failure rate that is one-fourth of the PS3 and one-ninth of the 360.
Despite the study showing the Xbox 360 has the highest failure rate, there is some good nws for 360 owners. The recent admission of the "Jasper" chip-set in late 2008 seems to have solved the problem that is the Red Ring of Death.
SquareTrade also factored in the amount of useage in the analysis for each game console. The 360 and PS3 are seen as the 2 systems for "hardcore" gamers, who tend to game for longer periods of time, while the Wii skews towards the more "casual" scene of gaming. Even after accounting for the usage arguement, the Wii still came out with the lowest failure rate with a 0.31% failure rate per day of use. In contrast to this, the Playstation 3 failed 75% more frequently, and Xbox 360 still lagged behind with 435% the failure rate of the Wii.
The main highlights of the study, taken from the source-
- "During the first two years of ownership, 2.7 percent of Wii owners reported a system failure to SquareTrade, compared with 10 percent of PlayStation 3 owners and 23.7 percent of Xbox 360 owners.""Excluding RROD failures, which are covered by Microsoft’s three-year warranty, 11.7 percent of Xbox 360 owners reported a failure."
- "While the RROD problem continued to be the major issue for Xbox 360s purchased through 2008, early indications point to the problem abating in 2009."
- "The most common types of problems seen with the PS3 and Xbox 360 were disc read errors and output issues. The Wii had more power and remote control issues than the other 2 systems."

I also still have my ps2 and ps1 and both still work perfectly and they're both used more than the wii by my lads
Thanks Werekitten for that info, but imo the only credible test would be something like: 1000 of each console left on permantely over a given length of time (maybe 6-12 months), playing some high end game.
I would still exspect the wii to come top but only because the fact that the machine is using lower power hardware. There is no chance of the 729mhz processor or the GPU ever overheating and melting any internal components. The only thing that could go wrong with the Wii is the disc drive since it's a moving component(to quote kiefer23).
By the way i do actually think the wii is a great console but i also think the ps3 and the360 are to.
Reminds me of the console damage test (see youtube video at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVRJtqPRZhQ ). My DS has been dropped by my son so many times I cringe and wonder if he's going to have it destroyed before Scribblenauts comes out. But aside from a small problem with the hinge, it's fully usable and still not broken. Both my wife and I are very impressed with the kind of abuse nintendo products can take.
@Norvek
They used the Nielsen data about console usage to calculate how much time each console was used in the 24 months, then divided the failure rate after 24 months by this usage time to get the "failure rate/24h of usage" which yields:
360: 1.19%
PS3: 0.57%
Wii: 0.31%
The difference, as you see, is much less dramatic than the title suggests. Also this "failure rate/24h" is a very rough average parameter, more correct would be considering the proper exponential growth given the probability, and then the numbers would be even closer
Not surprised since I still have my original SNES (with double pro fighter), N64, and Gamecube which work very well. I gave my NES away but it was still working like a champ. I also still have the PS1, PS2, and Xbox however the PS2 doesn't work reliably. They just don't make things like they used to... or well at least Nintendo still does ;)
even if it isnt played as much as ps360, the fact that there are more wiis in homes then the other two kinda evens it out
of cause the wii is more reliable then the ps3 and 360, nintendo never fucks up there products.. what do u expect they have been in the gaming industry for 26 years so i think they know what there doing.. i still have my nes and it still works, and i played that classic grey box like hell
As for saying that the researchers accounted for the the low usage issue, pray tell how ?
Well said kiefer23
I actually own a wii and a ps3 and have also owned a xbox 360, and i think they're all great consoles but the red ring of death was an issue that needed addressing on the 360,of course thats supposed to of been fixed, but that aside I fail to see how you could compare the wii to either of the other two consoles, apart from the hardware differences the wii in most cases gets nowhere near the usage of the other consoles. My ps3 is on average 3-6 hours a day (3 users) but i can't remember the last time the wii was used. anybody who's says this is not relavant is an idiot imo.
The fact is simple, the Wii is far more reliable than the PS3 and the 360, Internet fanboys(mainly PS3 ones on this post) can make any excuse they want but the Wii is far more reliable in the real world, we are not talking about some rubbish reader(Fanboys)survey where you can say whatever crap you like we are talking about repair centres and facts here is another REPAIR CENTRES facts-
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-system-failure-article
This is on the subject of the PS3 and 360-
"Talking to the company's engineer, Darren Thickbroom, it instantly became apparent that many of the Internet truths surrounding the console failures were anything but, heat dissipation issues of the Xbox 360 up until the most recent Jasper version were hardly exclusive to the Microsoft console. Slowly but surely, just like its competitor, the issue of PlayStation 3 reliability is being brought into question.
"While the scale of the so-called YLOD issue is difficult to judge in context of the all-pervasiveness of RROD, the fact is that what I learned on my visit was pretty shocking: whether you own a Microsoft or Sony console"
For the people claiming that the failure rate is lower due to the wii being played less - the researchers accounted for that and it is stated in the article. Learn how to read before blowing your wad!
Secondly, Nintendo has always been more reliable. My N64 still works and god knows how many hours of Perfect dark, Ocarina of Time, Goldeneye, etc are on that machine!
And if I still had my SNES i'm sure it would still run to this day.
clapiotis, let just them say whatever.. We own 2 Wii's and 1 PS3 at house, played thousand and thousand hours on it, we had no problems. Played a lot with the ps3, no problem, just twice bugs when playing. I owned 1 xbox360 but it had a lot of problems, I sold it before the rod fortunately.
Were they in the business during the SNES/MD era? I'm sure SNES was the most reliable console ever!
The Wii is a oldschool Nokia compaired to today's mobile phones. The new ones are vert impressive on the inside but one drop and they are permanently damaged on both the inside and outside. The old Nokia phones however could be dropped or even thrown and they woudn't have more then a scratch. The more complicated the machines get the more there is that could go wrong with it. It's why I stopped playing games on the PC, there was always something not working right to play the latest games.
The argument that the Wii is played less and that's why it doesn't brake is so childish to say the least.
I'm not joking when I say that I believe this is because the Wii is the least played of the consoles, and that has to be a big part of it. I can't tell you how many non gamers I know that own a Wii, never use it, and so it doesn't break.
@lafiel - good thinking. I guess that could be a big factor
the wii is the best console. i played mine for five hours just today. the games i played were:
majoras mask
mario kart wii
madworld
super punch out
mario kart 64
im probably gonna play some more mario kart soon
I feel special. I'm part of that 2.7%.
I have a PS3 and a Wii. My PS3 works great I've had it for 2 years now. My Wii's GPU overheated because of WiiConnect24 and now I see artifacts on the screen every now and then and it's very annoying...
I've lost one 360 (Xenon) and I've now had a Jasper for a few months...much better.
I have a 60gb PS3 which has had no problems thus far and still sounds fine, it is well ventilated.
My Wii gets the least amount of use and runs exceptionally well, not even one freeze, well made indeed.
duuuuude the wii sux duuuuude cause nobody plays it duuuuuuuude..
grow up.
Of course is more reliable, its has less power so the console do not overheat so easy, and have less resources that the other two even a 3 year old know this this is a i don't know what to post article.
@ coolestguyever)
unfortunately we have no statistics about after how many hours of usage the consoles broke down
I've read wii owners play their systems less than an hour per day, while 360 owners play 3+ hours per day.
Is the 360 really unreliable? Or do people just play it too much.
Wow, only 2 anti-Wii comments so far, I'm surprised, I thought there'd be more. I think there's been some progress n_n.
I think, the older tech used on the wii may have something to d with it, anyway, good thing for wii owners.
@deathbleach
Well explained.
All Nintendo consoles are well built and last.
I expect it to also be more reliable than the PS2, breakdown being why PS2 sales are so high.
Only two comments about how the only reason Wii has a lower failure rate is because no one uses it? Come on people, I expected more than that!
@Xoj
Stop trolling or learn how to read the article. Sony is listed at 10%...not 6%.
Nintendo always makes the better, more reliable systems.
No surprise here.
11% is excluding RROD.
god >_<
putting all fail of sony together can barely get to 6%.
Nintendo has ALWAYS had superior build quality. The NES, SNES, N64, and Gamecube were all very reliable hardware, especially compared with competing systems. The PS2 had an enormous amount of problems with the drive mechanism (among other things), and PS1's weren't exactly reliable either. Ever since optical media became the standard (and cartridges went by the wayside) for home consoles, system reliability has been shaky.
lol, at the header ..
please learn to use percentages correctly ..
the Wii according to this research has a "reliability" of 97.3%(100%-2.7%, reliability% = total units% - failure rate%), which definately isn't "4 times" of PS3 (90%) or "9 times more" than 360 (76.3%)
THI JUST IN!!!!!
Xbox 360 is much more reliable than most girlfreinds. Girlfriends are likely to get red ring of death every month.
@signalstar
anecdotal evidence ftw.
Both my Wii and Gamecube broke within two days of my purchase. I got a year outta my PS3 before the Hard Drive went nuts.
Also, Wii is 35 times less powerfull than PS3 and 30 times less powerfull than 360
The usage element is dealt with in the report.
@Deathbleachnarutobz
That and the fact the machine is using low power hardware. There is no chance of the 729mhz processor or the GPU ever overheating and melting any internal components. The only thing that could go wrong with the Wii is the disc drive since it's a moving component.
Quite frankly, only Nintendo's reliability seems within of what I expect for electronics. I barely considers the 360 a functional machine -- although it seems they finally fixed it -- but I am disappointed with the PS3 performance. I had several Sony's products along the years and they track much better than the what the study says about the ps3.
this is not a suprize since i never play the dang thing.
I think its pretty common knowledge that Nintendo builds quality products.
I wish they made cars.
