July was a slower month for new releases on WiiWare, with two big Final Fantasy titles and a fishing game from Natsume the only new releases to break into the worldwide chart - Bust-a-Move Plus! also charted in the Americas.
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: My Life as a Darklord debuted 7th in the Americas and 1st in PAL, with a continued 4th place showing in Japan in its second month - enough combined sales to claim the top spot worldwide. Likewise, Final Fantasy IV: The After Years rode a 2nd place debut in Japan and a continued 2nd place showing in the Americas (it slipped to 9th in PAL) to its second straight 2nd place worldwide placing.
Reel Fishing Challenge shot up to 1st place in the Americas with its first full month of sales (it released in the last week of June), and debuted in 3rd place in Japan (where the game is known as Fish Eyes Challenge) - good enough for 4th place worldwide despite no PAL release. The only other new release to chart was Bust-a-Move Plus! in the Americas (known as Puzzle Bobble Plus! elsewhere) - it did not chart outside the Americas but still managed 12th place worldwide.
Outside Water Warfare, which made it into the PAL top 5 in its first full month on sale, the rest of the charts also showed up in June, with some minor reshuffling.
The rest of the new releases for July, numbering nearly 20:
- Heracles Chariot Racing (Neko Entertainment, 800 points) (Americas: July 6th, PAL: July 24th): Did not chart in any region, with less than 1,000 sales in the Americas and about 1,500 sales in PAL.

Every game in the worldwide, Americas, and PAL charts have either "Mario" or "Zelda" in the title - only Japan breaks up the clean sweep. Japan is also the only region with a new release in the charts, though the appearance of Final Fantasy III there is hardly a surprise - it actually just missed out on the worldwide chart, placing 11th there. With no other new releases making it into these charts, the games haven't moved around much, but a few games did move up into the charts as prior new releases fell out.
While the Americas have seen a drought of Virtual Console releases in July (only three total), Japan has seen a flood of Virtual Arcade games released (seven in June, six in July, and two already in August). Most of those Arcade games, however, have not seen much success, as you'll see below. With nothing but well-established brand names and popular games seeing much success on the Virtual Console - as opposed to the several new releases on WiiWare that make the charts regularly - is there some substance to the idea of phasing out the Virtual Console releases in favor of more WiiWare games?
The rest of the new releases for July:
- California Games (Commodore 64, Commodore Gaming, 500 points) (Americas: July 6th, PAL: April 11th, 2008): Placed 19th in the Americas, with about 3,500 sales, but did not chart worldwide - it hasn't charted in PAL in over a year.
- Secret Command (Master System, Sega, 600 points) (Americas: July 13th, PAL: April 17th): Did not chart in any region (less than 1,500 sales).
- Pulseman (Genesis, Game Freak, 900 points) (Americas: July 13th, PAL: July 3rd): Did not chart in any region (less than 1,500 sales).
- Zoda's Revenge: StarTropics II (NES, Nintendo, 600 points) (Americas: December 29th, 2008, PAL: July 10th): Did not chart in any region (less than 1,000 sales).

Hope you all enjoyed the charts this month. Thanks to TWRoO, Pimouss, Whacker, and Faxanadu for collecting the PAL data, Manuelf for collecting the Latin America data, and ramuji and DeltaXIII for collecting the Japan data. As always, if you want to help collect Nintendo Channel data, send TWRoO a PM if you have a PAL Wii and myself a PM if you have an American or Japanese Wii - spreading it around more volunteers makes everyone's lives a little easier.
Sneak preview for August - three Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games released on WiiWare in Japan on August 4th, the first day of the tracking period there. If you've been paying attention, Pokemon is pretty big in Japan. So you might not be surprised, when I say, in a single day, all three had already sold between 5,000 and 6,000 - each.

Super Mario Kart, Super Punch Out!, Kirby's Dream Land 3, Bomberman '94. They all are great games that I would like to see charting some day.
Bust-a-move games are always fun to play. ^^ Don't know this WW one though.
Japan has Mario kart on SNEs allready, I want it to!!!
@Jumpin... the DLC does not appear on the data so no, it is not possible.
Is it possible to chart FF4: The Afteryears DLC? Each of those is 300 points a pop and it really would add up if say the average player buys 5 or 6 of them.
So next month the top four Japanese WW games may be Pokemon related? And I think Mario, Zelda and Final Fantasy were over reped.
Great Work and you only need to wait for the WW pokemon games to come outside of Japan they are gonna be bigger than the storage solution know as My Pokemon Ranch.
Thanks folks! This is good info. Of course, Wii Want More...but still.
I'm somewhat of a first time reader, but the chart format is hard on the eyes.
Otherwise, great info.
Great article, I look forward to these every month. With how high those VC sales are compared to WiiWare sales I wonder why Nintendo hasn't made a virtual hand held yet for the DSi. It seems like a guarantee to bring in a lot of revenue, but maybe Nintendo doesn't want to slow the sales of original titles on DSiWare.
