Nintendo: USA Wii Sports Resort Sales Top 500,000 in 9 Days - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 05 August 2009 / 3,854 Views

Could a title finally knock off Madden as top seller in August? Wii Sports Resort may have a shot, Nintendo says the game sold 500,000 copies in nine days in the United States. For reference - Nintendo reported that Super Mario Galaxy sold 500,000 week one in the USA during November 2007. Wii sold 981,000 units in the United States in November 2007 though by NPD figures, which makes the Wii Sports Resort 500,000 debut in the USA during the quiet summer months arguably more impressive. The Wii install base has more than doubled since Galaxy arrived though.

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nintendo has provided staycations to thousands of people nationwide since the July 26 launch of its Wii Sports Resort™ game. More than 500,000 units of the game for the Wii™ console sold in the United States through Aug. 3, according to Nintendo’s internal tracking numbers. The collection of 12 fun resort-themed sports lets players of all ages escape to a tropical island for some year-round summer fun. The game comes with one Wii MotionPlus™ accessory, which brings unmatched accuracy to games that have been specially designed for it.

“Through Monday we sold one copy of Wii Sports Resort roughly every 1.5 seconds continuously since it launched in the United States,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. “This tells us consumers were eagerly waiting to get their hands on these fun activities, and it’s a great start for a game that will have long-lasting appeal.”

Wii Sports Resort includes archery, Swordplay, table tennis, basketball, golf, bowling, Air Sports, Power Cruising, Frisbee®, cycling, canoeing and wakeboarding. The game is easy enough for novices to pick up but contains a tremendous amount of variety and depth to keep veteran players and their friends and family members entertained for hours on end.

Remember that Wii features parental controls that let adults manage the content their children can access. For more information about this and other Wii features, visit Wii.com.

Wii Sports Resort is available at a suggested retail price of $49.99. Additional Wii MotionPlus accessories are available at a suggested retail price of $19.99 each. For more information about Wii Sports Resort, visit www.WiiSportsResort.com.

I'm glad to see Nintendo isn't being too greatly impacted by the struggling economy. They know how to sell software for sure.

I though they would have shipped more. I was expecting 800k in 7 days.

But either way, it will have sales way above 15 million eventually.

It should be interesting to see how these jibe with the NPD numbers.

Something tells me that NPD will NOT show this level of sales. And if that is the case, it will point to my argument that NPD tracking this generation does not properly account for Wii sales because it does not have current generation data from Wal-Mart or Toys R Us.

Wii Sports Resort is a fun game. I wonder if it will surpass the original someday.

Yes!!! million seller worldwide in the first week confirmed, developers should take note and start to develop games exclusively for the M+

This is why nintendo is the king. Nothing can stop their software sales.

The game and Wii motion plus together were less than $45 on Amazon (no sales taxes and shipping included). Plus, a little bit of that goes to a good cause like VGChartz :)

What a great deal. I jumped on that train as soon as I saw it!

@Procrastinato
Mario Galaxy was released in November, during Holiday seasons. WSR was released in the middle of the recession and summer.

I agree that it is worth buying for the Motion + and the Swordfighting mini games alone :)

Archery, ping pong, basketball, bowling and a couple others are also really fun and control well. Its not a 'deep' game but tons of fun.

If the next Zelda is truly like the swordfighting and archery games, then I am going to be VERY happy with the next Zelda since both those games are very very fun and the controls are very very good!

It's worth buying the extra Wii M+ in my opinion. The game is great for multiplayer; swordfighting, dog fighting, power cruising etc. much more fun with another person.

The installbase of the Wii is substantially larger than it was in 2007. I'm not sure how WSR's 500K number is more impressive than SMG's, from that perspective.

Game was worth every penny in my opinion considering it was only $30. Got my WM+ adapters with WSR and TWPGA10. Sword fighting leaves me wanting more but I can't get enough of the bowling with 100 pins for 10 frames with friends and family. That alone has made this a lot of fun for me.

Yep. Nintendo has an internal tracker called Siras. But its not independent as something like NPD or Chart Track is, so they go with the independent figures unless they want to announce something big like this.

From the desription it sounds like these might be sellthrough numbers?

Still deciding on this game. Issue I have is I will need to WM+ units, but I refuse to pay full price for one. So, WSR was going to give me one, but then Red Steel 2 was delayed. So, now waiting to see how cheap I can get them off of Ebay to decide if I buy WSR.

Great, but it's all about legs.

Guessing from how much my family have played it, it should hopefully have long ones!
