VGChartz Methodology: Hardware estimates are based on retail sampling and trends in individual countries, which are then extrapolated to represent the wider region. This typically allows us to produce figures that end up being within 10% of the actual totals.
This data is regularly compared against official shipment figures released by the console manufacturers and figures estimated by regional trackers with greater market coverage than ourselves. We then update our own estimates to bring them into line with those figures. This can result in frequent changes often within a short space of time, but we feel it's important to prioritise accuracy over consistency.
Note that our estimates are based on sell-through data (units sold to consumers). In almost all cases the figures released by console manufacturers are based on shipment data (sell-in), where as soon as a device has left the factory and entered the supply chain for delivery it is considered a sale. This is why there is always a difference between the companies’ figures (sell-in) and VGChartz estimates (sell-through), even after we’ve made adjustments. The one exception to that is when a console has been discontinued and the remaining stock has finally sold out – at that point the figures will match.

Looks like all systems saw pretty strong October! Biggest winner here is NSW. Despite fighting against Mario Wonder during Oct'23 and being in its "final" fiscal year (i.e. final year before NSW2), it maintains only a 22.2% drop YoY. PS5 is also impressive, given SM2's release last year, though is dampered by the fact that hardware sales (specifically in JP) were bottlenecked due to lack of OG PS5 supply in preparation for JP pricehikes and PS5 Slim release in November.
Looks like Xbox and NSW will both be seeing relatively strong Holiday quarters. Playstation will also be strong, though it'll likely see a substantial drop YoY comp to 2023 due to bottlenecked demand being met in early November 2023 (+ PS5 Slim boosting sales far more than PS5 Pro).
1 million units. Still think Sony is a failing business and PlayStation is failing as a brand?
ya know what, Hardstuck, I'm gonna respond with a better response: No. My opinion has completely shifted. I now see that, yes, the great and glorious PlayStation is not failing as a brand, and that indeed, the infallible and magnificent Sony (who delivers the best of all possible products) is not a failing business. This month, in which PlayStation 5 sold though 1mil units, has truly altered my perspective! SONY IS NOT A FAILING BUSINESS, PS5 IS NOT FAILING AS A BRAND!!! SONY IS NOT A FAILING BUSINESS, PS5 IS NOT FAILING AS A BRAND!!! SONY IS NOT A FAILING BUSINESS, PS5 IS NOT FAILING AS A BRAND!!!
I raised a fair point and you got totally unhinged. Nice one
"raised a fair point" is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. You literally left a quippy one-liner b/c i didn't praise PS5 for hitting 1mil this past month lol. Did you think i was gonna respond to that in a serious manner? (Have you seen my wall?)
I wouldn't have said anything if you hadn't claimed PlayStation is a failing brand because concord failed etc
mhm i don't see the point in getting so offended in me saying that Sony has lost their direction in recent years. (And it seems a bit weird to be getting so worked up over the labels you (fallaciously) asked me to pin on Sony.) If i'm wrong, you are welcome to provide counter-evdience. I don't believe PS5 is the worst generation of Sony -- PS4 and PS3 arguably had far weaker starts -- but Concord, TLoU Online, Horizon Online (in development), and Helldivers 2 (for as good as the game is, the theme here is online live service experiences) read to me that Sony isn't quite heading in the right direction atm.
p.s. im not the one downvoting...i have to say this everytime lol, but i don't typically downvote.
MS started going live service back in 2018 with Sea of thieves, and Rare's new game Everwild will be live service too. Developing or assisting with the development of live service games doesn't automatically equal the downfall of a console. They're just additions
didn't say it equals the downfall, just said it's not a direction i believe Sony should be headed in. What Microsoft is doing is irrelevant, and doesn't justify nor dismiss any points i've made.
"They're just additions" is a dishonest remark since these live service titles take up a heavy amount of resources that would've been used on ambitious single-player experiences. Concord cost $200mil: This is not just "an addition", but a waste of valuable resources. Not to say Sony should focus no resources toward these live service titles, though it's becoming a bit much when they've got studios which would be working on mainline entries to single-player experiences devouting time to multiplayer games.
Swtich lead over PS5- 80.75 million
PS4 lead over PS5- 53.62 million
PS5 lead over xbox- 33.14 million
Wouldn't it be better to compare them launch aligned as opposed to the totals?
You can do that if you want to
Lol CourageTCD, you make a great point.
Bro its wild the Switch still sells this well lol
For a month like October, PS5 being down 11.8% year-on-year is actually quite good. In October 2023, PS5 was up 10% year-on-year. So it's quite an even ratio over the span of 3 calender years.
I found it hardly imaginable PS5 would sell a strong 19m units in the current fiscal year.
Right now, if I'd take the current performance until end of October, the PS5 is on track of a sell-through of ~17m units.
But given the Pro and various deals starting November, that 2m gap should be quite easily closed around March, 31st 2025.
Is 19 million your prediction? Sony's projection is 18 million. Even then I think it will do 17 million as you said it's on track for that.
Oh, pardon me. I thought Sony's forecast was 19m.
Well ... I actually think PS5 could reach 19m. November & December will be crucial.
If November & December will settle in at the same year-on-year decline like October's 11.8% now, I think it could hit somewhere between 18.5m - 19m as of 31st, March '25.
i don't see it personally, but im happy to be wrong. PS5 Pro won't be moving many units: $700 for casual consumers is a tough offer. Plus, PS5 would need to maintain near identical pace with PS5 Holiday 2023 (which is unrealistic noting SM2, PS5 Slim, and consistent YoY drops throughout the fiscal year).
I agree.
18.5 - 19m is quite a bet from me.
But that's the comfort of just guesstimation, right? :)
I am very much looking forward to that November & December data.
Not just only because of the Pro, but also since here in Europe (Germany) people can get the digital for down to ~339€ and the disc for ~439€ right now, bundled with something.
October was already quite impressive for Europe, with no special offers whatsoever.
I think PS5 could jump over that 18m mark for the running FY.
Good sales this month, my sales guess for November.
ps5 2.5 million due to the launch of the ps5 pro.
Switch 1.5 million
xbox 650 thousand
