The VGChartz sales comparison series of articles are updated monthly and each one focuses on a different sales comparison using our estimated video game hardware figures. The charts include comparisons between the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, as well as with older platforms. There are articles based on our worldwide estimates, as well as the US, Europe, and Japan.

This monthly series compares the aligned worldwide sales of the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo DS.

The DS launched in November 2004 in North America, December 2004 in Japan, and March 2005 in Europe, while the Nintendo Switch launched worldwide in March 2017. Therefore, the holiday periods for the two consoles do not lineup, which is why there are big increases and decreases.

Lower low in the gap chart means no end in the down trend. I expect equal sales of both consoles in the upcoming months. Switch's 2023 must be significant better than DS's 2011 to maintain Switch's chance to outsell DS.

And it def will. They seem to be confident in good legs next year with that FY forecast.

Hard to say. Sure Breath of the Wild 2 will be huge, but most people already own a Switch. It's all about Nintendo releasing another version of the Switch like the OLED to get numbers high. That's what they did with the DS, so many versions.

So, is this the farthest Switch will ever be from DS?

The DS’ 12.8m lead over the Switch will deteriorate from here on out, starting with a modest yearly win for Switch comparing DS' fiscal 2011 (17.53m) vs Switch's fiscal 2023 (21m, projected). But it's the next year where Switch will see a massive gain: DS shipments fell hard in fiscal ending March 2012 to 5.1m, whereas Switch's fiscal year ending March 2024 should see shipments of at least 15m, putting it around 143m total shipped by then. As long as Switch 2 doesn't arrive before fall of 2024, the Switch will surely pass the DS in the end.

This is really the last big holiday for the DS, comparatively. Switch absolutely has to play the long game to have a shot at usurping for second.

I hope the switch gets over the line of DS and PS2

-3DS will be official announced in 3 months at this point.
-After that, in one year, we got the 3DS release date.

Switch will gain some ground this Holiday, but are we going to get a Switch Successor Announcement in 2023 or 2024?
