Rumor: Game Boy Games Still Planned for Nintendo Switch Online

Rumor: Game Boy Games Still Planned for Nintendo Switch Online - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 27 September 2021 / 1,647 Views

Nintendo last week announced a new tier for Nintendo Switch Online, called Expansion Pack, will be coming in late October. The new tier adds Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games to Nintendo Switch Online.

There were recent reports that Nintendo was also planning to add Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to Nintendo Switch Online.

Eurogamer's Tom Phillips via Twitter recently said Nintendo still plans to add Game Boy and Game Boy Color games to Nintendo Switch Online. He said adding Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games will be more enticing to get people to upgrade to the new tier.

He did add that he isn't sure if the Game Boy and Game Boy Color games would be added to the new tier or the current Nintendo Switch Online tier.

I cant think of anything I want from gameboy, I installed several on an emulator on the switch, those games are super dated, Most have had remasters or remakes like Pokemon, and the best ever game on that platform, Advance Wars is getting remastered too.

I’d like Kid Icarus. Maybe Metroid 2, though I’d honestly rather they adapted Return of Samus. The GB Final Fantasy and Castlevania games are already on Switch,

I never liked kid icarus, Metroid is coming soon to the switch, way way better than the gameboy versions. I wont have time to play the old ones when I already have to find time to play the new one. I'd surely replay metroid prime trilogy tough.
I could say pokemon but there's plenty of those on switch, with shining diamond and arceus coming soon.
I mostly play on my 100inch projector screen and gameboy doesn't look good on it, I tried already on an emulator which actually improves graphics, which I'm sure the official switch version will not improve.
If games were available to buy, then ok, I could choose a few maybe, but paying monthly, forever, at an increased price, for maybe a couple games? No thanks.

Add GameCube please.

Can you imagine Eternal Darkness and Star Fox Adventures?

Or Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance. Or Tales of Symphonia. Or Harvest Moon: A Wonderful Life.

I don’t see how Genesis games would be an enticement when all but one of them are already available.

That could definitely be the case considering the base plan only had 2 systems as well, but the GB/GBC are were not high end systems in any way, so I don't think Nintendo would charge extra for them, but I can see them offering a third tier to add GameCube and GBA afterwards

I don't think that'll be the case. I think it'll be added in to the base subscription as NES and SNES releases no longer offer new exciting software to add value. Gameboy games to some aren't really exciting but they're still great games for the most part. But man, we really are getting closer to a classic Video Game Netflix with this service. Needs some work but it's shaping up nicely.

We already have a lot of Square and Konami GB games through their own collections, they are some of the best on the system. I kind of want the Oracle games, but my bigger hope is that they get the Link’s Awakening treatment.

I could see a scenario where the Oracle games get remade first, and then released on the online service down the line. The same way Links's Awakening was remade and I'm sure will also be released on the GB Online. Really hoping they get remade too as they're amazing top down Zelda games.

With Genesis Online we now have precedent for existing games on other compilations joining the service. So I think we could see Square, Konami, even Capcom games come to these services. We'll see for sure.

We already had a precedent: SNK. Crystalis is in both the SNK collection and on NES Online. Several other games in the collection are sold as
Arcade Archives titles. I don’t see Square Enix doing the same thing, and I don’t really see Konami jumping in with Castlevania or Contra.

Forgot about Crystalis and I'm sure there are others but nothing as big as Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corps, and Strider like we will soon have. For the right price I think Square and other 3rd party developers would be willing to come aboard. Square did support the SNES Mini even if it was minimal.

The licensing fees, especially Square Enix's licensing fees, are probably nuts though and I don't imagine Nintendo (even with as much money as they have) want's to eagerly pay for those titles to show up on this service. But hey, we can dream.

I’d rather be able to purchase those games anyway. I’m not really crazy about games being tied to subscription services. But yeah, we’re not likely to see Final Fantasy or Chrono Trigger. I’d personally like Dragon Quest V-VI.

Not me, advantages of a hacked switch, not only do I get this for free, I can also play it offline.
