Nintendo President on Switch Pro Rumors: 'We are Always Looking at Technology' - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 01 July 2021 / 2,350 Views

Nintendo during its E3 2021 Nintendo Direct focused on games and did not mention the long rumored more powerful Nintendo Switch.

Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser in an interview with The Washington Post was asked about the Nintendo Switch Pro rumors and said the company is always looking at the latest technology and how it can improve gameplay.

"We are always looking at technology and how technology can enhance gameplay experiences," said Bowser. "It’s not technology for technology’s sake."

"It’s how specifically can technology enhance a gameplay experience," he continued. "And then where do you apply that technology? Do you want to apply it on current existing hardware or platforms, or do you want to wait for the next platform? And then what’s the right gameplay experience with that? There’s a host of factors that goes into it, and it’s something we’re always looking at."

Bowser in the interview added the Switch is now in its fifth year and it has been redefining what a console life cycle can look like. The Switch launched in March 2017 and has yet to receive a price cut. Sales for the console continues to remain high with sales of nearly 400,000 units per week.

"As we enter into our fifth year, Nintendo Switch really is redefining what a console life cycle can look like, and the vibrancy of that overall life cycle with a strong cadence of content," Bowser said.

There was a recent report that Nintendo plans to release the Nintendo Switch Pro in September or October and assembly on the new Switch could start as soon as July.

What about online and networks?, voice chat even?.

Like it's no lie that all of the big 3 "look at technology", but when it comes to Nintendo, they are kinda late in some areas, VC being one of them, streaming for another and just having online lobbies to actively choose from (seriously, I hate how MM works in the Splatoon series for one example).

That pro model doesn't need to be pushing 4k res, just 1080-1440p 60fps is dandy, if not more fps. Last thing I wanna see is Nintendo trying to push 4k, then not meeting it and going back down to 30fps and sub below.

Not even 1440P... Would be good to have Switch games at even 1080P.

Yeah I'd still be happy with a small 1080p Switch screen, just as long as they focus on maintaining that 60fps. The current model seems to suffer here and there (besides all it's other flaws).

I just don't want to see them aiming stupidly high in one area, which always tends to lead to the sacrifices made to other areas (like higher fps, texture detail, other settings etc).

well bayonetta 3 would look much better with new hardware thats for sure. If it can't be played at 60fps i won't buy it.

Let's see if they have a "strong cadence of content" once all important Wii U games are ported. I don't think they can play this card again with Switch's successor.

Well... they're remaking a lot of PS4 games for PS5, and people are buying it. So, maybe they can.

on the hand, sony also gives ps5 version free if you purchase the ps4 version on a lot of cross generation games, microsoft does the same with x1 and x series you never see that on nintendo, wii u ports on switch at full prices

On the other hand, while I wasn't specifically addressing Sony, but they've certainly remade their share of games. Fairly sure Shadow of the Colosus has been sold for three consecutive gens, Last of Us is 2 for two so far with a rumored PS5 version ready to go, and they've already remaster Spider-man for the PS5. There are like, 5 games that have a free upgrade, and it's limited to games that were released after the PS5 launch. (Free upgrade for Miles Morales, but not Spider-man Remastered). That's not Sony's general policy. When they start remaking other PS4 games, which they will, I'll bet pretty much anything that there will be no free upgrade for those.

And I'm not even saying that as criticism. If I was Sony or Nintendo and people were willing to pay for remasters, I'd be making remasters.

While they certainly did port most major WiiU software, Switch has a lot of support on it's own. So let's not pretend, that without WiiU games Switch wouldn't have been a success.

Agreed. Also, when the Switch launched, the 3DS still had quite a bit of 1st party support. Nintendo has now fully transitioned to supporting the Switch and their output has definitely increased.

What worries me is that Reggie said pretty much the same thing before the launch ofnthe Wii U and the fall of Wii's sales

The Wii's sales had already fallen a lot in it's fifth year. The Switch's sales trajectory is completely different.

Switch Pro confirmed.

After we looked at the newest technologies we opt to use tech that's a few years old, because it's cheaper and people would still buy Nintendo games if they run sub 720p/30fps anyways, so why would we not make as much profit on selling our hardware as possible.
