Publisher Electronic Arts and developer DICE announced a new Battlefield will launch for consoles and PC in Holiday 2021, while a second Battlefield game will launch for mobile in 2022.

The 2021 Battlefield game is being developed by the biggest ever Battlefield development team for the next-generation consoles and PC. It will feature an"epic scale, all-out military warfare, game-changing destruction, massive battles, and more.

"I know everyone is wanting more detail about what’s to come for Battlefield this year, and I promise we have A LOT to show you in the coming months," said DICE general manager Oskar Gabrielson. "We’re putting some things together for when we reveal the next generation of Battlefield, and we can’t wait to show that to you all...but for now, we have a couple of things we wanted to tell you about.

"First, we’re really excited to have the biggest Battlefield development team ever working on our console and PC game for this Holiday season, and second...we have something very exciting to talk about on mobile!"

Gabrielson added, "2021 is an exciting time for us here at DICE. Working with more world-class development studios within Electronic Arts, we have our biggest team ever on a Battlefield game for console and PC. Our friends at Criterion and DICE LA are working with us on our shared vision for the game, while the team in Gothenburg is taking technology in the game to the next level. Together, we are creating a jaw-dropping experience for you to enjoy later in 2021.

"We’re in daily playtesting mode right now: polishing, balancing, and making the best possible Battlefield game we can. I can tell you it is a bold step. It has everything we love about Battlefield – and takes all of it to the next level. Epic scale. All-out military warfare. Crazy, unexpected moments. Game-changing destruction. Massive battles, packed with more players and mayhem than ever before. All brought to life with the power of next-gen consoles and PCs."

More information on the 2021 Battlefield game will be released "soon."

The 2022 Battlefield mobile game is being developed in a partnership with Industrial Toys and is a standalone release that is a completely different game from the console and PC Battlefield.

Good to see no PS4 or Xbox One version. Time to move on

The new systems just dont have the numbers available to support the kind of sales this game should have, PS4 and xbone needed.

Sure but insistent cross platform support was also a huge reason why battlefield 4 was so unpolished.

Have a look at the weekly sales charts, PS5 versions of new releases are outselling the PS4 versions by large margins. Come fall 2021 where the PS5's userbase will 2x as big, software sales on last gen will be really low and probably not worth the effort. If they create a stand out next gen experience it will benefit from extremely healthy legs which will compensate for the smaller userbase (probs 22-25m by years end)

Interesting, and even beyond that this newgen development work will translate into their next games as well. They need to do that work for pure newgen experience engine anyways, and supporting the newgen will help grow that marke making it all more worthwhile. If they don't do that and keep doing crossgen now, then when do they stop? Of course not every game concept demands nextgen performance and some can exist perfectly fine as crossgen, but engaging with that power is somewhat the calling card of major AAA stuff like this, otherwise there is alot more interesting quirky AA stuff out there.

I think it sucks a bit. They should absolutely develop the game primarily for the new consoles and shouldn't hold back on their vision to support old hardware. But if a port to last gen is possible without compromising that experience - why not? Last I checked BF4 still has players on X360. It's a 30fps with tearing, 24 player experience. If it's possible, port it. Just don't say "it runs surprisingly well", and sell it at a discount.

You definitely think that would make sense, but that would just be a waste of resources that could be finishing the new game unless they outsource to some no-name studio. But in game development, you're developing the game at what you want the final product to be based on the hardware. If you're including previous gen hardware, you're then having to develop an entirely different version of the game, which requires a lot of resources and manpower, and it then extends to scaling back your vision of the final game on the newer hardware because both versions of the game can't be too far apart. That's why there's so many concerns about the upcoming Horizon: Forbidden West and God of War: Ragnorak also being released on last gen PS4 because that means the original development of the game was scaled back a bit from the start to accommodate the older hardware and you're therefor not getting a true next-gen experience despite playing on the newer hardware.

I mean it's a shame in so far as they are not willing to spend extra resources developing a last gen version. I'm not even asking that DICE have anything to do with it. The miracle Nintendo Switch port attitude should be taken towards last gen machines. It can be a few months late if needs be, it can be compromised. But it's a good thing when games come to ageing hardware and as a bonus it keeps down e-waste.

So it will truly be a next-gen game?!? Awesome!!!! I'm glad they weren't wasting resources on last-gen consoles so it can truly be the experience we always wanted on the new hardware! Now......I JUST NEED A NEXT-GEN CONSOLE TO BE AVAILABLE!

Considering the supply issues, the choice of platforms seems quite risky here.

True, but at least it'll be a full next-gen experience with no compromises rather than any scaling back to accommodate the older hardware.

Yeah but we're like at 7+ million for PS5 and 4+ million for Xbox, by the time the game would release (probably the end of the year), we would have 11+ million PS5 and 6-7 million Xbox, so that's a good base for launching a game

But with gamepass on series x and pc, that should help with the sales when there's no xbox one or ps4 version
