Official Music Charts To Include Tracks Downloaded For Gaming - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 22 July 2009 / 1,768 Views

The Official Charts Company have reported that, if they can get a system up and running for the sales data of downloaded songs, they could be contributing to the charts very soon.

Once this happens, it is highly likely that music labels and stars will start to promote themselves through Music Games. Promoters will no longer feel that they are losing out on chart positions by making music available through things that dont count towards the overall chart positions and sales.

Official Charts Company managing director, Martin Talbot has said that the activities of music labels will change.

"At the moment we're not including downloads from games, and as a result of that labels aren't promoting their releases through games in the way that they might if sales of these downloads contributed to the charts."

"As soon as game downloads are incorporated, you'll start to see people become much more active in making those tracks available, I think."

It's thought, though, that the inclusion of games like Rock Band and Guitar Hero could unfairly skew the charts, but Talbot and his company aren't worried about it. Afterall, the charts are there to count music of any kind.

"If people went onto iTunes and bought a karaoke version of a Michael Jackson track because they wanted to celebrate on the day of his memorial, or whatever, that's absolutely fine and it will be reflected in the charts. Our concern is what is being bought on a weekly basis. We can never know the motives for people going out and buying music."

Although I admit music games have a few bad effects on rock music for the true fans of the bands, I do like that it has brought rock back into the light and started to overshadow the shitty manufactured hip-hop and pop of today...

At the same time, I am kinda upset at the fact that "Naked Bros. band" is a Rock Band DLC...

Ah well... it still goes to show, you can't kill the metal...

EDIT: Wait, why the fuck do singstar and Rock Band get in, but not Guitar Hero??? Does anyone pay attention to sales???

Not sure how to react to this since im not into the gaming Music genre that much. It does sound like a good idea to do this though IMO.
