PlayStation Firmware 2.70 Available Now - News

by VGChartz Staff , posted on 01 April 2009 / 35,055 Views

Sony has officially announced and released the latest update to the PlayStation 3's software, firmware 2.70. This update adds several requested features.

The biggest feature is the addition of cross-game text chatrooms. While in-game you can open up a chat window with up to 15 other people while running three chats simultaneously.

Other features include a new way to sort your friends list, larger message attachment file transfers, and the ability to back-up videos purchased on the PlayStation Network Video Store to an external storage unit.

The following video is a demonstration of some of the new features by Eric Lempel, the Director for PlayStation Network Operations.

I think the 2.70 firmware update is great even though I only have a 360 but I see that Sony is trying there best to make there online service better than what it was now all they need to do is allow you to join your friends from the friends list instead of trying to invite them or telling them to invite you.

@bks - because neither the PS3 or 360 are strong enough to window a game and chat room. Only PC is.

To those that say PSN is infinitely cheaper than Live. Water is infinitely cheaper than beer. I still buy beer.

Adding features is great, but I did not like the interface of the chat system. He had to access the crossbar menu to view the text. Why not just put the text in the corner of the screen in-game, or run the game in a window with the chat in a seperate window? Then the player can respond via keyboard. As it looks in that demonstration, I wouldn't use it.

U have a complete log of what has been said and it is fast and easy. Really getting tired of voice chat this and voice chat that! U watch, voice chat will come and fuck all of u will use it."

I have to quote this when PSN has voice chat. FFS..., your fanboy badge wont be brighter if you just say everything is perfect.

text chat is very useful but they need to sort it out s you can at least type a full line, copy and paste from browser is also neat

Yoshi-1up, you have idea of how much money you need to spend on a good PC that can actually run Crysis? xD With MGS, you only have to buy a PS3 bundle.. And it's great to chat with your mates at the same time with different games..

"You get what you pay for."

Xbox live is infinitely more expensive then PSN, yet has only 2 features it does not. 1 Feature if you include game launching in home. Yet it cost infinite times what PSN costs? That and xbox live in P2P, and PSN is dedicated servers? Why do you pay infinitely more for live again?

Some people are just complaining just to complain.

The text chat room is a great addition. It's not as useful as voice chat, but it's better than we had before.Be grateful people.

Tim_Duncan (on 02 April 2009)

Great new feature, PSN stars to feature exactly the same things as Xbox Live, except it's free (and except there are still exclusive games released on this console).

Cross text chat is awesome, now give us cross voice chat and it will be perfect.

  • 0
Theo (on 02 April 2009)

I often use Skype to cross-game chat, or even just as a better and higher quality in-game chat (my lappy usually sits beside me) The cross-game text chat is usefull but still pretty tedious. I was hoping for voice chat : (

Oh well, an improvement is an improvement I guess.

u can use any usb keyboard. or wireless or bluetooth.

sony need what in game voice chat? and will have most of xbox live features ;).
and being free.

  • 0
XanderZane (on 02 April 2009)

They definitely need multiplayer voice chat. Video voice chat would even be better. Unless you and your friends have keyboards hooked up to your PS3, the text chat is going to be pretty useless, except for a quick, "Hey Charlie. Let play KZ2 online." type of chats. People won't be in there for long. Sony probably needs new servers for the voice/video chat feature and haven't got them in place yet. Sony is trying to catch up to M$'s XBox Live, but it baby steps for now.

  • 0
nightsurge (on 02 April 2009)

@ssj12

People on PC have keyboards. Not very many people have a keyboard sitting by them while they are playing games on PS3.

Also, most gamers on PC these days are running Vent or other voice chat programs while they are gaming. Text chat is too slow for competition level, and even WoW players use voice chat now over text chat when it comes to big raids and stuff.

I already text chatted with people in-game whether they were playing the same game or not. All you had to do was hit the PS button and send them a message. This will make it easier though. The movie transfer thing is HUGE. Now they need to allow us to make a playlist for content stored on an external drive. I have all my music there and cannot create a playlist.

I am loving this update already. The video backup is very nice, and now if anything ever happens to my HDD or PS3, all I have to do is replace that link and restore the data. This is a very big step for Sony's video service, but they still need to allow for multiple active units at once, because I sometimes like to watch shows in the bedroom and the living room. Right now I would have to deactivate the living room system, activate the bedroom system, and restore the data to that PS3 or visa versa. That is a bit to much of a hassel for me. At least I know I can buy a movie or TV show now without having to worry if my actual system goes.

I still have to try out the new text thing. If it is persistant across all games then that is very nice. That would open up the possibility for my brother, my friend, my dad, my grandpa, and me to all talk amoungst eachother, while we play our respective games. Usally we are all on at the same time just, my dad is playing GT5P, my friend on COD4, me on Killzone 2, my grandpa on LBP.

Plus the new browser stuff is all very usefull.

  • 0

@dj - I guess this is why PC gamers are superior than console gamers than. We use text chat as its the best form of communication for online games. It allows us to keep records of what is said so we can remember strategy in Scrimmages.
