NPD Analyst: PS5 Won't Release Before Fall 2020

NPD Analyst: PS5 Won't Release Before Fall 2020 - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 02 June 2018 / 3,556 Views

NPD Analyst Mat Piscatella is forecasting that the PlayStation 5 won't release earlier than fall 2020. This follows the comments from Sony Interactive Entertainment president and CEO John Kodera that the PlayStation 4 is entering the final phase of its life cycle.

The PlayStation 4 has been available on the market since November 2013 and has shipped 79 million units as of March 31, 2018.

PS4 is my favorite system of all time and I've been gaming a long time. The main reason for me is the sheer library of games it offers. Counting digital-only releases (which honestly is most of what I buy anymore), the PS4 offers more games, I believe, than any other home console ever has to date. And I can use a proper controller to play them, unlike via Steam. And the Dual Shock-style controller remains my favorite kind, at that. I like having the control sticks both located at the bottom best, personally.

And as JONO pointed out, yeah the graphical level that's possible on the PS4 is still outstanding by current standards, and Sony's first-party line-up for PS4, both past and present, is, IMO, the best on any console to date. (Don't get me wrong, Nintendo offers many fun games, but Sony's offerings this gen also tend to include pretty good stories too, and that matters to me.)

On top of all that, I don't have unlimited money to plunk down for new systems all the time.

Put it all together and you can see why I'm not really anxious to wave goodbye to the PS4 just yet. I can definitely wait another couple two or three years for that. PS4 still has a lot to give before it can justifiably be classified as tired.

PS2 had the best library of games ever even if you count digital games.

"PS5 won't release before fall 2020" thanks captain obvious. If it did release this year we would've gotten news months earlier.

Fall 2020 is over 2 years away. Releasing before fall 2020 doesn't equal release this year.

Barkley he is agreeing with you, reread.

Barkley carlove (on 22 May 2018)

Don you need to reread. xD. "If it did release this year we would've gotten news months earlier". What about 2019? That's still before Fall 2020, that's not this year. His comment implies that there are only two options, release this year, or release Fall 2020 or later.

The imply you made is a big assumption that I don't think he made. But well I don't think it will release 2019. And carlove is quoting the NPD analyst.

Barkley carlove (on 22 May 2018)

Huh? he's saying it's obvious that it won't release before fall 2020 because we'd already know if it was releasing in 2018, completely ignoring 2019 and the beginning of 2020, it's not a big assumption it's exactly what he's saying. xD

Don't forget that lack of evidence isn't evidence of lacking =p

But I understand your point.

I'm fine with waiting. First party games still look jaw droppingly good right now, and we have tLoU 2 in the pipe line. I really see no need for a PS5 for a while now.
I have my pc if i want to push third parties really far in terms of graphics and framerate.

Makes me wonder though, if PS4 is your main system right now to play third party games, when would you like a PS5? Do you feel like games look good enough right now?

DonFerrari JON0 (on 22 May 2018)

I would buy PS5 early if it release, but from what I see, the gains for releasing 2018-2019 would be to little to be worth.

Nobody need the PS5, because the PS4 is the ultimate console for players and developers now :) Why ? Every month new fantastic AAA-games with the best graphic(God of War, Detroit Become Human, Ni No Kuni 2) for PS4. And the hardware sales figures are impressive!

I am ok with 2020. As long as all PS4 games will run at 4K and have optical drive. PS5 games I am sure will be 4K. It will look pretty for sure but I think the jump will be not be any bigger than PS3 to PS4.

PS4's doing great, both hardware and software saleswise. Let it sell through 100 million before even considering a PS5 announcement.

I'm cool with it coming later. Got lots to play still and we know there's a lot more goodies to come.

That sounds reasonable to me, though I agree that 2021 - 2022 is the perfect timing for a new PS

DonFerrari (on 22 May 2018)

Yep been the expectations of many to see 2020-2021...
And ugh about the 2 years cycle that we will see no more than 1 release per "refresh" and probably a lot of unoptimized games that you will be changing HW a lot for minimal improvement.

I'd be fine with 2021 or 2022. The later the better. I feel that the PS4 has so much more yet to offer.

  • 0
nanarchy Sixteenvolt420 (on 23 May 2018)

not just that, but it is hard too see them being able to put significant enough performance in a box at a reasonable price by 2020 to justify a new gen.

As an online multiplayer gamer, the ps4 really doesn’t offer me much exclusive wise. It’s probably why I haven’t purchased one yet. Even their top exclusives (God of War, Horizon Dawn) don’t have multiplayer options. I mean sure, Gran Tourismo, Killzone, Driveclub and possibly others do - but there haven’t been anything compelling about them compared to the competition.

And no, I’m not trolling. I’m being honest about why I don’t follow the PlayStation brand.

Well, looks like I'll be gaming on Steam or Switch then. Tired of these consoles. I've had them for almost five years now. Ready for something new.

Well, I think this confirms I've grown out of gaming. A 7 or more year cycle is not a "perfectly normal cycle length". Last gen was the longest at 7 years, and I was hoping we'd get back to 5 or 6 year cycles. Apparently, I'm in the minority. People want to see this gen go to 2022 or beyond. Whatever. I'm checking out soon. I'm already playing much less (only about 3 to 4 games a year these past years) but this just confirms that gaming isn't for me anymore.

DonFerrari Rêveur (on 22 May 2018)

There is no point in making a cycle if the gains are small. Considering diminishing returns, tech evolution and all people don't expect before 2020 to give us a worthwhile jump.

Shiken Rêveur (on 22 May 2018)

To expand on DonFerrari

With the Pro and the X now out, there needs to be an even bigger gap before making the leap. Think about how disappointed people were with the power of the base PS4 and X1 when they came out. We now have dynamic 4k gaming, so anything less than native 4k 60fps (30 if the effects are vastly improved) would be unacceptable. It does not just stop there, we need more than just a bump in resolution. Had the Pro and X not been a thing, it would be different. But they are, so enjoy what we have and move on.

I honestly cannot understand why anyone would give up on gaming due to a cycle that allows a decent jump at an affordable price. Anything less than 2020 would spit in the face of PS4 Pro buyers and likely fall flat when it comes to living up to expectations.

Tridrakious Rêveur (on 23 May 2018)

I also don't fully understand why someone who would "give up on gaming" just because console life cycles are beginning to average 6 to 7 years. I would much rather prefer a console be fully maxed out by the time the next system launches versus the new system launching when there is still plenty of life left in the existing platform.

  • +4
DonFerrari Rêveur (on 23 May 2018)

Shiken not to forget that they would struggle just to do the res and fps jump but still have to put more textures, polygons, shadow and lightning just to begin.

Why not 2070? Fuck it! Let's just keep one console forever!
