The VGChartz Gap charts are updated monthly and each article focuses on a different gap chart. The charts include comparisons between the 7th generation and 8th generation platforms, as well as comparisons within the 8th generation. All sales are worldwide, unless otherwise stated.

3DS Vs. PSP Global:

Gap change in latest month:  543,600 – PSP

Gap change over last 12 months: 2,109,092 – PSP

Total Lead: 555,706 – 3DS

3DS Total Sales: 63,688,215

PSP Total Sales: 63,132,509

The 3DS has remained ahead of the PSP for two straight months. In the latest month the gap shrunk by 543,600 units in favor of the PSP and by 2.11 million units in favor of the PSP in the last 12 months. The 3dS currently leads by 555,706 units.

An important note is that the two handhelds launched at different times of the year. The PSP first launched in December 2004, while the 3DS launched in February 2011. The 3DS has sold 63.69 million units, while the PSP sold 63.13 million units.

Definitely the most interesting comparison for me this gen. It's weird how at some points it was an almost 12m lead and then it started tracking behind, only to catch up a bit now.

Really shows you how much smartphones affected the handheld market, when the leading platform is barely keeping up with the "behind" one from last gen. When all's said and done, I don't expect the 3DS to keep its lead considering it's at the end of its life :/
