This monthly series compares the combined aligned sales of the 7th generation platforms with the 8th generation platforms. The two charts compare the home consoles as well as handhelds.

This first chart compares aligned home console sales between the 7th and 8th generations. That is the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii combined sales aligned, versus the combined aligned sales of the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U.

The 8th generation has struggled to keep up with the 7th generation and in September 2015 the gap grew by 1.26 million units.

The 7th generation home consoles in their first 23 months sold 61.94 million units, while the 8th generation consoles have sold 48.00 million units. The 7th gen currently leads by 13.94 million units.

8th Generation Total Combined Home Console Sales: 48,001,536

The 7th generation handhelds in their first 46 months sold 119.57 million units, which is nearly double the 8th generation. The 8th generation handhelds have sold 59.66 million units. Where exactely is the 8th generation selling better than the 7th, as a lot of people still claim ???

Damn, 14 million in the hole. But what is really interesting is that third parties seem to be doing pretty well, thank-you very much. Shows that it does matter which platform is the lead platform. The PS install base buys lots of 3rd party games, therefore even when the other platforms are not doing very well 3rd parties are still able to sell decent amounts of software. Of course they are helped by also having mobile phone / tablet revenues, and in some cases pachinko machines.

Third party console software sold much better last generation, more than twice as well.

You sure about that? By my (VGC) calculations 7th gen software total launch aligned is 37% ahead. Hardware is 28% ahead. So relatively total software is higher, but considering the huge skew of high selling 1st party on Wii that difference is due to 1st party sales not 3rd party.

For a boring gen, 100M gaming devices sold has surprised me.

Hmm...Funny, while some will go ahead and say some criticism to Wii U and Vita, it's surprising how eighth gen is still managing to do well.

60 million handhelds is not something to brush off. Sure, we might never get a 100-150+ million console(or even handheld), but the numbers of 60 million handhelds and 48 million consoles is pretty amazing. Considering the Wii U and Vita's unfortunate sales, I didn't think eighth gen would do this well.

Interesting fact: PS4+Xbone actually outsell Wii+Xbox 360. How is that possible?

Wii-U September 2015: 10.5 million

PS3 September 2009: 25.8 million

So the difference between the systems in 3rd place is actually bigger than the 7th gen console lead.

Wii U and Vita are dropping the ball.

This doesn't include handhelds just the Wii - Wii U drop is nearly 14 million.

For handhelds, in terms of hard numbers, the 3DS is to blame for just as much of the drop as the Vita. Of course, the PSP -> Vita percentage drop is bigger, but the DS -> 3DS numbers drop is as big.
