Pachter: PlayStation 3 Price Cut Likely This Week - News
by William D'Angelo , posted on 18 February 2013 / 8,943 ViewsWedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter spoke with GamesIndustry International. He expects Sony to drop the price of the PlayStation 3 to $199 on Thursday February 21. This is the day after Sony is expected to unveil the PlayStation 4 in an event in New York City.
Pachter also expects Microsoft to follow suit by this year's E3 in dropping the price of the Xbox 360.
Sony announced earlier today that it is cutting the price of its handheld, the PlayStation Vita, on February 28th in Japan. The price for both the WiFi and 3G will both be priced at 19,980 Yen.

Seriously doubt they would cut the price of both their products in the same week, for two reasons 1 they want to focus some attention on the psvita with this price cut, they know the dangers of 2 competing offers for the same gamers money, only ones who lose from this type of competition are Sony. and 2. Patcher said it, and I personally wouldn't believe him if he said tomorrow was Tuesday.
price cut is jp only
It's likely going to be heading to North America and Europe as well. I mean Japan gets a price cut only 2 days before Sony's Press Conference?
Yeah prof I would say there is no doubt that the price cut for the Vita will go global, if not just to stop people in NA and EU feeling like they're paying 50euros more for the vita just because of their region, Sony wanna get rid of any reason why people would Not pick one up.
People still pay attention to Pachter?
It's funny :-)
If I say teh same can I have a bit of it's salary? WHo the hell pays for his food? this man just says thinks anyone can guess. really PS4 announce and PS3 price cut... shocking!
Haha yeah indeed, in other news this food which was going out of date 3 weeks ago is going to hit an all time low in price next week!
I don't believe Patcher but he may be right for once in his life. If PS4 is getting announced, they might drop the PS3 prices slightly (not too drastically yet).
If he says it, it's not going to happen. Besides, Sony is in financial trouble, and I think they need to sell at least some of their hardware at a profit right now.
I agree with ganon, PS4 will be released at a loss, I would imagine Vita will be sold at a loss thanks to the new price cut. Sony will want to squueze every bit of money they can out of the PS3 before they are forced to price cut.
SONY DOMINATION INCOMING
Wow tell me MS will actually drop the price of the 360? When was the last time that happened.
It's been selling great at the current price points / bundles for the last couple of years, so no need to fix what ain't broken. It took the Wii like 3 years before it received its first price cut because it was selling so well.
I doubt they will announce a PS3 price cut on the same week they announce a PSV price cut. That would take the needed spotlight off PSV. However if there is a likely price cut by fall, and If PS4 isn't backward compatible, I guess I'm getting a replacement PS3 this fall.
Was sold for $199 last Boxing Day/Black Friday, maybe I can pick one up for <$150? I could probably expand my collection for around $200 (UC3, InF2, ToX, ToG2, WKC2, Beyond, TLoU). :-D I'm not leaving the 7th gen any time soon.
they just announced the god of war bundle will be 350 so are they gonna change that
i've already expected that. to bad it will be the price of Vita.
No, PS3 is selling well enough so keep current margins until at least the end of the june Q. Then cut PS3 price 2 months before PS4 launch
360 at 159-179 would be a nice way to crush Sony.
If PS3 went to $200 the price differential would still be less than it is now. A $20 drop won't do much as Wii's drop from $150 to $130 showed this holiday.
