Nintendo Reports Sales in Major Regions for All Platforms - News

by William D'Angelo , posted on 27 April 2012 / 10,543 Views

Nintendo has unveiled its results for the first quarter of 2012, which ended March 31, 2012. Like in the past they have also included the sales of its rivals, the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Vita, and PSP. Nintendo has also released their current fiscal year forecasts, which include Wii U numbers.

USA Hardware

The numbers above compare the average weekly sales on a monthly basis in the United States. The first thing to point out is that the Xbox 360 leads all three months, while the PlayStation 3 has closed the gap, but remains in second. The gap between the Wii and its rivals grew each month, from roughly 10,000 per week in January, up to 30,000 per week in March. The PlayStation Vita in its launch could not outsell its main rival the 3DS, though it was close. The DS despite its successor, the 3DS, being available is still selling a decent amount, while the PSP is nearly dead in the US.

USA Software

While no numbers are given on the US software sales in the US, it does show that the Xbox 360 had the bestselling games, with three of the top five games and eight out of the top 20. There were six PlayStation 3 games, three Wii Games, two for the 3DS, and one for the DS.

Japan Hardwre

Looking at the weekly sales in Japan, the 3DS is the clear cut winner, more than doubling the sales of its closest competitor nearly every single week. The 3DS also has a huge lead compared to its main rival the PlayStation Vita. The PlayStation 3 has outsold its main rivals, the Wii and Xbox 360 by a fair margin, and it nearly outsold the 3DS during week nine.

Japan Software

Just like with hardware sales in Japan, the 3DS dominates the software charts, with 12 of the top 20 games. There is one DS and one Wii game. Despite having the most games in the top 20 the 3DS did not have the bestselling game, which was One Piece: Pirate Warriors for the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 3 had three games out of the top 20 and the PSP also had three. There were no Vita and no Xbox 360 games in the top 20.

Europe Hardware

Looking at the hardware sales in Europe, the PlayStation Vita despite having a strong launch with sales over 200,000, it quickly fell, and was barely selling 25,000 a week by the end of March. It has even fallen below the PSP and the DS is the only platform it is still outselling. Other than the Vita launch week, and one other week, the PlayStation 3 has been the bestselling platform on a weekly basis. The Xbox 360 has been the second bestselling home consoles, while the Wii is in third.

UK Software

Nine out of the top 20 bestselling games in the UK are for the Xbox 360, while five are for the PlayStation and four are for the Wii. The other two games were for the 3DS. Four of the top five games were for the Xbox 360. Seven of the top 20 games were published by Electronic Arts. No PlayStation Vita games made it into the top 20.

Germany Software

Unlike in the UK, the Xbox 360 had a poorer showing in Germany with just two of the top 20 games on the console. Eight of the top 20 are for the PlayStation 3, eight for the Wii and two for the 3DS. No PlayStation Vita games made it into the top 20.

France Software

The top 20 software sales in France show that four of the top five games are on a Nintendo platform and six of the top 10. There are nine games for the PlayStation 3 in the top 20, six for the Wii, three for the 3DS, one for the Xbox 360, and one for the PlayStation Vita.

Spain Software

The top 20 Software sales in Spain show that three of the top five games are on the PlayStation 3. Seven of the top 20 games are on the PlayStation 3, six are for the Wii, two for the 3DS, and one game each for the PSP, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and PlayStation Vita. You read that correctly, a PlayStation 2 game cracked the top 20.

Nintendo Projections

Nintendo also gave forecasts of what they expect their hardware and software to selling for the current fiscal year which ends December 31, 2012. They expect the 3DS to sell 18.5 million units, an increase from 13.53 million in 2011. 3DS software is expected to double from 36 million to 73 million. DS sales are expected to drop by 50 percent from 5.1 million to 2.5 million, while software is expected to drop from 60.82 million to 37.0 million.

The Wii hardware for the current fiscal year includes the Wii U, which is why it shows its sales increasing from 9.84 million to 10.5 million. Wii sales are down 44 percent year to date and if that trend continues it will sell 6.5 million for the year, which would put Wii U sales at four million for its launch period in 2012. To put this in context the Wii sold 2.95 million units during its launch period in 2006.

so 360 beat 3ds for the year in Europe, and by a decent chunk. Hopefully sales pick up at the holidays again. I wonder if we will see a month where the ps3 passes 360 in the United States. Maybe this month considering a bunch of $200 deals ps3 had.

Hard to tell for the WiiU shipments since there's no Wii/WiiU breakdown, depends on what Nintendo expects from Wii.

The US and Spanish charts are seriously lacking Final Fantasy XIII-2

It is almost unbelievable specially in the US, in NPD report for February, it was above a bunch of these games on the US chart, just doesn't make sense

Strong Wii sales in continental Europe - not surprising; and strong 3DS sales in Japan are not surprising. It seems native English (although much more in American) territories are weird in their videogame habits - lots more Computer game-style games than traditional videogame-style games.
