'When will this franchise peak?' Many asked this after last year's Black Ops defied all odds and outsold a Modern Warfare Call of Duty game (the very reason the series is so big today); a brand within itself. So it shouldn't come as a surprise that Call of Duty has yet again broken industry records, but it's by how much that makes it staggering.
A reported 1.5 million people queued at midnight globally to get their hands on Modern Warfare 3, with a total of 9.3 million copies sold on the first day. The Xbox 360 version sees around a 54% share, meaning it's the first game on one platform to pass 5 million on its first day. The PlayStation 3 version held 42%, which is around the 4 million mark. Both day ones are only slightly behind Black Ops entire first week sales. The PC version and the Wii version held the remaining 4%, which is around 370,000 units.
As a whole, Modern Warfare 3 is up 33% over Black Ops' first day sales, and a whopping 55% up on the previous Modern Warfare. the US and the UK combined account for 7 million, which is just over 75%.
Early data suggests first week sales are on course for around 12 to 13.5 million. With just over 87 million Call of Duty games already sold on home consoles and PC this generation, by the end of this week the Call of Duty franchise will have sold over 100 million games this generation.

every game now copies the COD games. Now we attack them for being the same. Why won't a FPS shooter come out and really change things or do we expect another game changers like MW1 from these guys?

That's just ridiculous. Before, I used to think the only franchise capable of competing with CoD with these kind of fast records was GTA. Now, I'm not so sure anymore. Over 9 million in a day is just mind boggling.

Alright, what's with all the hate? CoD:MW3 is a great game. And just because I say that doesn't mean I'm a raging 12 year old, and won't spend money on other great games. I'm STILL planning on getting Skyrim, BF3, MGS HD Collection, I still play games like Halo, Gears of War 3, etc. PLEASE stop the Console wars, and game franchise wars... to tell you the truth, no gaming console is truly better than the other. Sure PC is the best when it comes to graphics anyday, but for people that can't afford a good PC, you have consoles... It all comes down to let people choose what they want, play that they want, pay for what the want. All these stupid wars are all really just a matter of opinion. So do something else with your time other than just going around saying "PS3 is better" or "BF3 is better" etc. Go out, get your games, have fun, and enjoy your own personal gaming experience.

I hate modern FPS with no recoil and regeneration health, and they call it realism.
COD is the shit, im enjoying MW3 more than 2 but will always love BOps campaign more mainly b/c of the story, MP is fantastic as always still maintains its fun factor. will be interesting to see if next years treyarcs COD can outdo this one and what happens with gta5 if that impacts it at all if they launch at the same time

I don't about FPS, and i was a great fun of em in the time of 1997 to 2001. Now they're weapons with no recoil and regenerating life, and they talk of realism. FPS like this are s*** and when i see they sell so well i want to cry.

Wow it's just insane. Altough maybe is understandable, this is the ending of the MW franchise which like you said is the series that launched the CoD saga to the extreme fame. A friend of mine played all night yesterday and already beat the campaign (unsurprisingly) and he told the game was like the other but it really felt like the ending of the MW series.

I was thinking of getting it (I never played a call of since CoD2 on solo in 2005) just to see and maybe play with my friend who is a fan, but today is Skyrim day ! Or should I say Skyrim month (100h+ of gameplay I'm sure)... mybe latter, I'm just sorry not being in the numbers for the record sales.
Ive lost respect for the COD franchise; not because its a shooter, or because its COD, nor for the sales, or even the genre itself, but because companies like Activision are milking the living shit out of their IPS for the sake of making money without having little concern about the quality of the games they spewt out.

People were looking for something to beat Halo. COD was the best option, so people overrated COD to death and this is what you get: A scripted game with stupid AI that breaks sales records. Way to advance gaming in 2011 fanboys!
Lol I hate the argument that its all 12 year kids bought the game. Lol imo more 20+ year olds play this game then any other game as well. So the game is popular with all age groups.

I really disliked this game. The worst I played of the series. sounds and graphics, are really terrible.
unfortunally this game is designed for X360, so for the US-gamers mainly! it has a metacritic of 90 (xbox360), 89 (ps3) and 82 (PC !!!)... crazy why people have to buy it! it's just an update to the other games! did you hear the sound of the game? you will be deaf after one week... but hey, if the US loves these games, i don't wanna complain! i'm not gonna buy it ;)
2 countries which I was losing hope for (I live in the US), now I truly have lost ALL hope. That's ALOT of raging 12 year olds who convinced their parents of the same ol mediocre piece of sh.....t game when both consoles have so much better games that are also shooters(Gears of War, Halo, Killzone 3, Uncharted 2-3, Resistance 2-3, etc).
Gears of Wars is already out, Uncharted is only on the PS3, Killzone and Resistance are not really great games and Halo has no new sequel coming out.
@GhettoGlamour, LMAO! I'm not a COD fan by any means, but it's a very fun game and I enjoy it whenever I get the chance toply it. Spec Ops is my fav mode. I think it deserves the sales its getting, they've been very smart to release a Modern Warfare every 2 years and not every year.

I got into a debate with my friend that disagreed with my prediction for MW3 to go Triple Diamond (30 million units sold and more) LTD. It's easily trending to hit that prediction. I'd love to see the figures when FY2012 ends...and...I should have bet him money...DOH!!
Well I enjoyed the campaign, and have already enjoyed spec ops, and am looking forward to getting pissed off at multiplayer
Having said that, I would love if they took a break and didn't release another IW game for 3 years so that we would have next gen consoles, and then they could make it look so pretty that they wouldn't have to do any of that innovation stuff that they did with 4

I love how "real gamers" get mad because a game goes mainstream. The truth is the game may not be the best at any one aspect, but it is good at everything and well rounded which for most people makes the franchise pretty damn good. Without this franchise we very well may be saying PS3/ 360 What??? For all we know both consoles become massive bombs without it. Congrats to Activision / Infinity Ward / Sledgehammer / Microsoft / and Sony. Phenomenal numbers!!!!
Are you really THAT reta........close minded?!?! Halo, Gears, Forza alone have sold very well even though M$ doesn't have that many 1st party studios, and I guarantee other games would have gained a further look if the sheep wouldn't be so brainwashed into a mediocre game. Examples would be Alan Wake, Limbo, Dynasty Warrior saga, BF3, etc.
On the PS3 you have GT5, Uncharted series, GoW series, InFamous series, Killzone series, Resistance series, etc.
Problem is a mediocre game comes backed with huge marketing, gets the 12 year olds hyped (and some stupid so-called adults who believe themselves gamers) that eat into this hype but dont give other things a fair shake. Imagine if we had to sit there every year with another same ol transformers movie with little to no change, and it breaks box office records?!? Then they stop making great movies like The Usual Suspects, Pulp Fiction, Desperado, Good Will Hunting, U-571, The Hunt for Red October, The Hunted (tommy lee jones, benicio del toro). Instead we are condemned to another Twilight movie. Seriously people have to stop being sheep and give other games a fair shake.
i really hate to say it, but Black Ops' Multiplayer was somewhat fun to play (and i normally ignore shooter's, totally - not my genre) but if they somehow improved the one in MW3 in comparison, it might be somewhat deserved.
MW3 is much better. Trust me. Although it plays the same, the game has a different feel to it(in a good way)

While it is ridiculous how much this has sold ... don't be haters ... the game is high quality whether you like it or not. People LOVE this game and series and play it all year long. Until there is another game that can beat its addictive gameplay ... this will continue and CoD won't have to "evolve" much because its does exactly what millions of players want it to do. Also it DOES have more content then most games have. Spec Ops, Survival, Single player campaign and of course multiplayer with TONS of modes in multiplayer. not many games can offer the sheer amount of quality content that MW3 has. So whether you like it or not ... stop pretending its a "mediocre" game because 95% of games out there do NOT offer that much content or quality.

What's up with all the hating comments? Obviously there are tens of millions of people who think this game is pretty fun. I played the campaign for the first MW and thought it was awesome.
I don't do multiplayer, but I still think it's great that the video game industry has such a huge juggernaut as this. Now let's just hope that Mass Effect, GTA, and Metal Gear Solid start seeing some increases in sales as well.
