Shadow to Rival Sonic in Generations

Sonic Generations, featuring both the modern iteration of Sonic the Hedgehog as well as his classic design from his SEGA Genesis games, is widely considered an attempt by SEGA to bring the franchise back to its roots. However, today SEGA unexpectedly announced that Shadow the Hedgehog, first introduced in Sonic Adventure 2, will be facing off against Sonic in Sonic Generations as his "rival".

Shadow has received mix reception from fans overall. Some appreciate him as the dark, edgey foil to Sonic, while others see him as cliché and unnecessary. Shadow is attributed by many as part of the overall decline of the franchise. 

I find it interesting that SEGA is bringing back Shadow for Generations, considering they have been very keen as marketing Generations as a return to "classic" Sonic. Will other side characters such as Big the Cat and Rouge the Bat show up as well? Last year's Sonic Colors greatly benefited from the reduction of the cast, it would be a shame if Sonic Generations undid all the progress of Colors.

In any case, we'll find out what happens when the game drops November 1st.

Why not bring back Metal sonic instead? He made a kickass rival in 2D and 3D sonic.. :(

Tails and Knuckles are ok, but PLEASE don't bring back Big the Cat.

Agreed. I never played Sonic Chronicles, but I'm pretty sure that even Bioware couldn't salvage that lemon of a character.

Personally, I don't mind Amy, Knuckles, Rogue, Tails, and Shadow. Those are actually pretty cool and well designed characters of the Sonic Universe. However, all the other rejects should stay far away from this game, especially big the cat and those retarded pigeons and parrots from sonic rideers.

It begins again.... Shadow is a sign of things to come!! while Shadow is kind of badass, i think Sega wont stop there. on the plus side it could mean that we can play through all levels as Shadow.

I thought the demo hack already revealed Shadow as the Boss for the City Escape/SA2 section, as well as the likes of Metal Sonic for the Chemical Plant/Sonic 2 section and Silver as the Crisis City/Sonic 06. I also thought it had already been revealed that each level has a sonic "Friend" to save, they're being used as a plot device. Nothing new or controversial here.

Aw man! Will this mean that we'll finally find out the true nature of Shadow's connection to Sonic? I have my own theories on this subject, two of them actually, and both of them depend on whether or not a certain member of Eggman's family has green eyes...

wow I suddenly feel a lot less excited about this game...you know I agree with wfz metal sonic is way cooler and can be considered "classic" since he's fairly old and made his first appearance in Sonic CD.

I don't mind Shadow too much, as well as Tails, Metal Sonic and Knuckles. All other characters should be kept away from this game.

I'm okay with this. The game is called Generations, and like it or not, Shadow was an important part of Sonic history during the Dreamcast to early HD era.

... Metal Sonic was announced ages ago, there's been screenshots all over the internet o.O I don't mind if Shadow gets put in, to be honest, none of the characters bother me, I'd be happy with Big the cat lol, just as long as the gameplay stays how it is...
